An angel spoke to Philip and told him to walk along the road from Jerusalem to Gaza. While he was walking, Philip met the treasurer for the queen of Ethiopia who was on his way back from worshiping in Jerusalem. He was seated in his carriage and reading from the book of the prophet Isaiah. Philip ran up to the carriage and asked the man if he understood what he was reading. The man replied, I will understand if someone teaches me. Please, ride with me. So Philip climbed into the carriage and they read together. He was led like a sheep to the slaughter. And just like a lamb is silent before the shearers, he did not open his mouth. He was humiliated and no one stood up for him. He has no children or grandchildren because his life on earth was cut short. The man asked Philip, Was the prophet talking about himself or someone else? Philip answered by telling the man about Jesus. Soon the man said, Look! There s some water right there! Please baptize me. He ordered the carriage to stop, they went down to the water, and Philip baptized him. When they came up out of the water, the angel took Philip away. When people love others, they live in God, and God lives in them. When we live in God, our love grows more perfect. We will not be afraid if we live like Jesus because perfect love knows no fear. If we live like Jesus we do not fear punishment, because we experience God s perfect love. We love each otherbecause God loved us first. If someone says, I love God, but hates someone, that person is a liar. Because if we don t love people whom we can see, how can we love God, whom we cannot see? You have been pruned and are ready to bear fruit because of the message I have given you. Yes, I am the vine; you are the branches and if you stay with me, you will produce much fruit. Apart from me you can do nothing and you will be thrown away like a useless branch. But if my words remain in you, you may ask for anything you want, and you will receive it. 9 Taking Faith Home CARING CONVERSATIONS - Discuss in your home or small group: Tell a story about how you have been loved by others. How is God s love for us shown through Jesus? Why is it important to know that God s love for us comes before we can love God? SERVICE The Easter joy began with women at the empty tomb being sent out with a message that Jesus has been raised (Mark 16:6). We, like the women are sent out into the world with the good news of Jesus Christ s victory over sin and death. It was the same for Philip who met the Ethiopian eunuch on a wilderness road (Acts 8:26). As you meet people in your daily ac1vi1es, find ways through your words and ac1ons to communicate God s love to them. Whose life can you touch today with the freedom of the gospel that has conquered sin and death? Pray for Chris1an outreach throughout the world. PRAYERS A Prayer for the Week: Loving God, just as you reached out to the Ethiopian eunuch and claimed him as your own in bap1sm, help your church to share your love throughout the world. Amen. The Racial Justice Team would like to invite all Messiah members to the meeting to be held in the Community Room.
