And when he was twelve years old, they went up as usual for the festival. When the festival was ended and they started to return, the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem, but his parents did not know it. Assuming that he was in the group of travelers, they went a day s journey. Then they started to look for him among their relatives and friends. When they did not find him, they returned to Jerusalem to search for him. After three days they found him in the temple, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions. And all who heard him were amazed at his understanding and his answers. When his parents saw him they were astonished; and his mother said to him, Child, why have you treated us like this? Look, your father and I have been searching for you in great anxiety. He said to them, Why were you searching for me? Did you not know that I must be in my Father s house? But they did not understand what he said to them. Then he went down with them and came to Nazareth, and was obedient to them. His mother treasured all these things in her heart. 9 Taking Faith Home SCRIPTURE VERSE FOR THIS WEEK And Jesus increased in wisdom and in years, and in divine and human favor. Luke 2:52 (NRSV) DEVOTIONS Read: Luke 2: Luke is the only Gospel that tells us about Jesus childhood. It is not easy to understand how the Son of God grows up, but Luke makes it clear in 2:40 and 2:52 that Jesus increased in wisdom and in years, and in divine and human favor. Growth is part of life. Jesus as a human being experienced growth, too. He asked ques/ons. What ques/ons do you want to ask at this point in your life? At the end of the story of Jesus in the temple at age 12, it states that Mary treasured all these things in her heart (v. 51). Earlier, as a response to the message of the shepherds, we learn that Mary treasured all these words and pondered them in her heart (2:19). The mother of Jesus, too, is growing in her understanding of Jesus. Like the child Jesus, and his mother Mary, we, too, grow in our lives of faith. As you look at your life of faith, where do you think you have grown in wisdom and in your rela/onship to God and others? Pray: Dear God, help me to be open to your word and to the experiences around me, that I may conqnue to grow in love for you and in service to others, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Lenten Devotionals Seems odd to be thinking ahead to Lent, but it will be time to start writing the devotions before you know it! Meals on Wheels Drivers Meals On Wheels could use your help delivering on Monday, Dec. 31st and Tuesday, Jan. 1st. Contact Gina Riesen to sign up and for the pickup information at Racial Justice Fact More than 1,200 people age 60 and older were serving time in Wisconsin prisons as of Dec. 31, The average cost for these prisoners is twice as high as the average cost for younger prisoners. Annual Report The deadline for submitting reports to the office for the various ministries is Monday, January 7th. Prayer Room As we begin a new year it s the perfect time to reflect on the happenings of the past year and your hopes for the new year. Sign up on the kiosk to spend some time in the prayer room. New Years is a time of reflection, not resolutions. We Are Blessed As we come to the close of the year we want to thank all our volunteers who serve in all our ministries. People ask how Messiah can serve a congregation of 1,811 with one pastor and it s because of all the volunteer help that steps in when there s a need. Thank you for your time, creativity and energy to serve Messiah and the lives we touch.
