This is our challenge as communities of faith - to become more like Jesus each day. This coming Monday on October 31 st Pope Francis will travel to Lund, Sweden and meet with the World Lutheran Federation to officially open the 500 th anniversary year of the Reformation. Earlier this year Pope Francis said this : The intentions of Martin Luther were not mistaken. He was a reformer. In his time, the Church was not exactly a model to imitate. There was corruption in the Church, there was worldliness, attachment to money, to power - and this he protested. And today Lutherans and Catholics, Protestants, all of us agree on the doctrine of justification. On this point, which is very important, he did not err. He gave us a medicine for the Church. A man was there named Zacchaeus; he was a chief tax collector and was rich. He was trying to see who Jesus was, but on account of the crowd he could not, because he was short in stature. So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore tree to see him, because he was going to pass that way. When Jesus came to the place, he looked up and said to him, Zacchaeus, hurry and come down; for I must stay at your house today. So he hurried down and was happy to welcome him. All who saw it began to grumble and said, He has gone to be the guest of one who is a sinner. Zacchaeus stood there and said to the Lord, Look, half of my possessions, Lord, I will give to the poor; and if I have defrauded anyone of anything, I will pay back four times as much. Then Jesus said to him, Today salvation has come to this house, because he too is a son of Abraham. For the Son of Man came to seek out and to save the lost. 5

9 Taking Faith Home CARING CONVERSATIONS Discuss in your home or small group: Talk about a me when you felt as though you did not belong to a group you wanted to be part of. In the story of Zacchaeus (Luke 19:1-10), Jesus says that this tax collector is not an outsider, he belongs with the people. When have you included someone who may have felt unwanted? SERVICE Zacchaeus was commi ed to giving half of his possessions away to the poor. Commit this week to making a dona on towards the needs of the poor in your community or elsewhere in the world. Here are some sugges ons: Donate items that are s ll in good condi on to a local charity store Forgo a household ac vity and donate the savings to an aid organiza on Purchase food to donate to a local food pantry Organize a fundraiser and give the proceeds to a charity serving the disadvantaged RITUALS AND TRADITIONS Jesus came as a guest to the house of Zacchaeus and brought salva on to his home (Luke 19:5-9). As a sign and reminder of Christ s presence in your home, set an extra place at your meal table this week. When you gather for meals, share when and where you have seen the presence and ac vity of Jesus during the day.
