F I R S T R E A D I N G Sirach 10:12-18 The beginning of human pride is to forsake the Lord; the heart has withdrawn from its Maker. For the beginning of pride is sin, and the one who clings to it pours out abominations. Therefore the Lord brings upon them unheard-of calamities, and destroys them completely. The Lord overthrows the thrones of rulers, and enthrones the lowly in their place. The Lord plucks up the roots of the nations,and plants the humble in their place. 3 waste the lands of the nations, and destroys them to the foundations of the earth. He removes some of them and destroys them, and erases the memory of them from the earth. G OSPEL O S L A CC LAMATIONA M AT I O N H O LY G O S PEL Luke 14:1, 7-14 On one occasion when Jesus was going to the house of a leader of the Pharisees to eat a meal on the sabbath, they were watching him closely. When he noticed how the guests chose the places of honor, he told them a parable. When you are invited by someone to a wedding banquet, do not sit down at the place of honor, in case someone more distinguished than you has been invited by your host; and the host who invited both of you may come and say to you, Give this person your place, and then in disgrace you would start to take the lowest place. But when you are invited, go and sit down at the lowest place, so that when your host comes, he may say to you, Friend, move up higher ; then you will be honored in the presence of all who sit at 4

5 the table with you. For all who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted. He said also to the one who had invited him, When you give a luncheon or a dinner, do not invite your friends or your brothers or your relatives or rich neighbors, in case they may invite you in return, and you would be repaid. But when you give a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, and the blind. 9 Taking Faith Home CARING CONVERSATIONS Discuss in your home or small group: What does it mean to be proud? What does it mean to be humble? How has Jesus been a humble servant to us? In response, what are some ways we can show humble service to others? In our society, we are taught to fear strangers. What does the command to welcome strangers (Hebrews 13:2) teach us about the benefit of honoring people we don t know? DEVOTIONS Hebrews 13:7 says, Don t forget about your leaders who taught you God s message. Remember what kind of lives they lived and try to have faith like theirs. Pray for Chris an leaders who teach you about God: pastors, teachers, Sunday school teachers, youth leaders, parents, grandparents, etc. How has their faith helped you with your faith? Plan a way to express your thanks and apprecia on to them. RITUALS AND TRADITIONS Invi ng others to be guests in our homes is an excellent way to teach our children about offering hospitality to others. But remember that hospitality is not about pu ng on a special meal or having a spotless home to show off. It s about welcoming people into our lives as we are and accep ng them as they are. During the week, honor household members or friends by making them the center of a en on at a dinner. Set a special place at your dinner table for the honored person. This is also the first day of Sunday School, 9:30 am - 10:20. Sunday Meals on Wheels Messiah will be driving the Sundays during September. A sign-up sheet is available on the Kiosk. Prayer Shawl Meeting Monday, Sept. 26, Gathering Space at 6:30. Sinners Dinners Join your fellow sinners of Messiah for an evening of food and fun. Groups of 8-10 will be formed, and then gather 4-5 times over the next nine months for dinners. One of the members will be assigned to host the first dinner, then the group will determine scheduling and hosts for the remainder. The host provides the main course, along with beverages. Host assigns items for everyone else to bring for the meal. Couples and singles welcome. Sign-up on the Kiosk, or call Jim Stolzenburg: Campus Ministry Sunday September 25, Special Collection. Monthly Luncheons Resume This Fall Wednesday, Sept. 28, 12:00 Senior Adult Ministry will again offer the monthly Older Kids OK Club Luncheon on the last Wednesday of each month. Our first speaker of the year will be from the Madison Police Department, with a focus on scam and identity theft prevention for Seniors. 11 Annual Fall BBQ Sunday, September 25, following the 10:30 worship service.
