9 Taking Faith Home DEVOTIONS - Read: Luke 4:1-13. This story is o'en called the Tempta)on of Jesus. That descrip)on focuses on Jesus ability to resist sin. However, the Hebrew word for tempted can also be translated as tested. This other transla)on is helpful since the story is more about tes)ng Jesus to see what kind of messiah he plans to be, one who seeks personal power and pres)ge, or one who is faithful to the God of the Bible. When the focus is on tempta)on, we can easily miss how we, like the devil, can try to change Jesus into someone who serves our desires for personal importance. Both Jesus and the devil quote Scripture. We can use the Bible and our faith in unfaithful ways. Part of our sinfulness is to make Jesus into someone who serves our desires instead of the one who points us to worship and trust God to take care of our real needs. Think about or discuss how Jesus is our Savior by overcoming evil and idolatry (desire for personal power and glory) and by placing his trust in God. Pray: Dear God, we thank you that Jesus speaks your word faithfully; help us to listen to your word and trust in you. Amen. SERVICE - Romans 10:8b states, The word is near you, on your lips and in your heart (that is, the word of faith that we proclaim). Confessing faith in the Lord not only assures you of your salva)on, but is a source of proclama)on so that others may be encouraged to have faith in Christ. The Reforma)on theme of the priesthood of all believers includes our calling to tell others of the good news of Jesus Christ. Use your voice this week to affirm faith in Jesus. It may be as simple as a table grace, nigh:me prayer, or blessing given to a family member of friend. FDE=>F 3 years-4 th Grade Elizabeth Crummy, Children s and Family Ministry Coordinator Cell # familyministry@messiahchurch.com Teachers Needed for We need one Kindergarten teacher and two 3rd grade Sunday School teachers for next year. If you join the Kindergarten team, you can choose to co-teach or to assist a returning teacher- choose your own level of involvement! For 3rd grade, here's some news that might make it feel less intimidating to jump in: 3rd-4th use the same curriculum. With new people at 3rd grade, it would be entirely possible for 3rd and 4th to plan as a team and share ideas every week. They already work closely for the Christmas Program, etc. First Communion Classes Children will prepare for 1 st Communion on March 17, 24, 31 and April 7, 28 during Sunday School. Children will need an adult family member with them on March 17, April 7 and April 28. We assume that all 2 nd graders will participate, so let me know if your child will not be. Children in 3 rd and 4 th grade who have not yet received First Communion may join us. Again, please let me know if this is the case so I can get the information to you. We will celebrate First Communion at both the 5 PM liturgy on Saturday, May 4 and the 10:30 AM liturgy on Sunday, May 5. Families will be able to select either date. Sunday School Schedule We do have Sunday School March 24 & 31, which are spring break weekends for many schools. We do not have Sunday School April 21 & 28, but please join us for the Palm procession at both Sunday liturgies on Palm Sunday, April 14. YIJG< DB? FDE=>F M=B=CG@F 5 th -12 th Grade Teresa Palumbo, Youth Ministry Coordinator Text to: , youth@messiahchurch.com YOW TableTalk During Lent, the Messiah community comes together to share in soup suppers and a brief worship service. As these activities coincide with YOW, the students will participate in special Lenten TableTalk Discus-sions from 6:30-7:30 V+ that include Messiah s Lenten worship series and soup suppers. Students are expected to attend YOW from 6:30-7:30 V+ during Lent. Please note the shortened evening schedule. Youth are expected to attend the soup suppers even if they choose to not eat soup. This is an intergenerational opportunity for the youth and members of the Messiah community to get to know one another better and a nice way to observe Lent. Youth will be given a LENT Passport and assigned a table for the soup supper each week. 10

11 Weekly Announcements March April 4 Messiah Blood Drive The drive runs 1:00-6:00 V+. We will need volunteers for the registration station, donor aide station, and the refreshment area following donations. Volunteers can work the full 5 hours or a half shift. We will also need home baked items to serve after blood donations. Please take time to schedule an appointment to donate blood at a time that is convenient for you. You may call , or visit red cross blood.org and enter our sponsor code: messiahlutheranmdsn. Walk ins are still welcome, but scheduling will help the event run more smoothly. For questions contact Janet Alfonso at Soup Makers Needed The Lenten Soup Suppers continue for the rest of the Wednesday evening Lenten Services at 6:00 V+. We are in need of people to provide 10 quarts of soup each week. We also need donations of sliced bread. Please sign up on the kiosk. For more information contact Deb Diewald at (608) or Faces of Incarceration Exhibit This art exhibit is a way to honor and portray those who have been formerly incarcerated, an exhibit pointing to the dignity of all people. During the weekend of March 9-10, Pastor John Mix, (one of the artists) and members of the Messiah Racial Justice Team will be on hand after the Saturday service and inbetween the Sunday services to discuss the exhibit located around the Gathering Space. SAM Volunteer Opportunity SAM has a chance to staff a concession stand at the The American Family Insurance Championship, a professional golf tournament on the PGA Tour Champions, played at University Ridge Golf Course in Madison. The dates are June These are the dates for ALL events. I have no further details at this time. Keith is trying to get a feel of interest. We would be giving back to further support the Second Harvest Food Bank.
