Listen, inhabitants of the world, both low and high, rich and poor together. I will speak wisdom with my mouth and have understanding in my heart. I will solve my riddle to the sound of the harp. When we look at the wise, they die; with fools they die together. Mortals cannot abide in their pomp; like beasts, they perish. Hand Judges 12:1 6 The men of Ephraim were called to arms, and they crossed to Zaphon and said to Jephthah, Why did you cross over to fight against the Ammonites, and did not call us to go with you? We will burn your house down over you! Jephthah said to them, My people and I were engaged in conflict with the Ammonites who oppressed us severely. But when I called you, you did not deliver me from their hand. When I saw that you would not deliver me, I took my life in my hand, and crossed over against the Ammonites, and the LORD gave them into my hand. Why then have you come up to me this day, to fight against me? Then Jephthah gathered all the men of Gilead and fought with Ephraim; and the men of Gilead defeated Ephraim, because they said, You are fugitives from Ephraim, you Gileadites in the heart of Ephraim and Manasseh. Then the Gileadites took the fords of the Jordan against the Ephraimites. Whenever one of the fugitives of Ephraim said, Let me go over, the men of Gilead would say to him, Are you an Ephraimite When he said, No, they said to him, Then say Shibboleth, and he said, Sibboleth, for he could not pronounce it right. Then they seized him and killed him at the fords of the Jordan. Forty-two thousand of the Ephraimites fell at that time. The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Scripture Walter Brueggemann 1 Corinthians 1:10 31 Now I appeal to you, brothers and sisters, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you be in agreement and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be united in the same mind and the same purpose. For it has been reported to me by Chloe s people that there are quarrels among you, my brothers and sisters. What I mean is that each of you says, I belong to Paul, or I belong to Apollos, or I belong to Cephas, or I belong to Christ. Has Christ been divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Or were you baptized in the name of Paul? I thank God that I baptized none of you except Crispus and Gaius, so that no one can say that you were baptized in my name. (I did baptize also the household of

3 Stephanas; beyond that, I do not know whether I baptized anyone else.) For Christ did not send me to baptize but to proclaim the gospel, and not with eloquent wisdom, so that the cross of Christ might not be emptied of its power. For the message about the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. For it is written, I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and the discernment of the discerning I will thwart. Where is the one who is wise? Where is the scribe? Where is the debater of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? For since, in the wisdom of God, the world did not know God through wisdom, God decided, through the foolishness of our proclamation, to save those who believe. For Jews demand signs and Greeks desire wisdom, but we proclaim Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles, but to those who are the called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. For God s foolishness is wiser than human wisdom, and God s weakness is stronger than human strength. Consider your own call, brothers and sisters: not many of you were wise by human standards, not many were powerful, not many were of noble birth. But God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise; God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong; God chose what is low and despised in the world, things that are not, to reduce to nothing things that are, so that no one might boast in the presence of God. He is the source of your life in Christ Jesus, who became for us wisdom from God, and righteousness and sanctification and redemption, in order that, as it is written, Let the one who boasts, boast in the Lord. You send prophets to call us back when we stray, and in returning to you we find refuge and steadfast love. Blessed is Jesus Christ our Savior. Christ spoke with authority to show your will; even the demons knew his voice and listened to him. Still he calls us to share your message of love with all.

5 With thanksgiving, we remember how he took bread, and blessed it, and broke it, and gave it to the disciples, saying: Take, eat. This is my body, given for you. With thanksgiving, we remember how he took the cup, saying: This cup is the new covenant sealed in my blood. As often as you share this meal, do this remembering me. Remembering your goodness and grace, we offer ourselves to you with gratitude as we share this joyful feast. Great is the mystery of faith: Christ has died, Christ is risen, Christ will come again. Pour out your Holy Spirit upon us and upon this bread and cup. Make us one in the body and blood of Jesus Christ our Lord. Teach us the wisdom of the cross, the message of Christ crucified. Let the weak be lifted up, and the mighty made humble, so that we may boast in nothing other than the grace of the Lord. Through the Lord Jesus Christ, in the unity of the Spirit, we bless you, God of glory, now and forever. Amen. Jesus said: I am the bread of life. Jesus said: I am the vine, you are the branches.
