Thanks be to God. S=4+9 R 9,+- 1 Corinthians 13:1-13 If I speak in the tongues of mortals and of angels, but do not have love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. And if I have prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. If I give away all my possessions, and if I hand over my body so that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing. Love is patient; love is kind; love is not envious or boastful or arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice in wrongdoing, but rejoices in the truth. It bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never ends. But as for prophecies, they will come to an end; as for tongues, they will cease; as for knowledge, it will come to an end. For we know only in part, and we prophesy only in part; but when the complete comes, the partial will come to an end. When I was a child, I spoke like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child; when I became an adult, I put an end to childish ways. For now we see in a mirror, dimly, but then we will see face to face. Now I know only in part; then I will know fully, even as I have been fully known. 9 Taking Faith Home DEVOTIONS - Read: Luke 4: Jesus preaches in the synagogue in his hometown of Nazareth (4:14-21). The people are thrilled and praise Jesus un(l he points out how God cared for a foreign widow when there were plenty of widows who needed help in Israel and how God healed Naaman, the commander of an enemy army. The townspeople did not like the way Jesus showed how God cared for the enemy of the people of Israel. Historically, religion has o-en been used to support one s own people, suppor(ng na(onalism over true faith. Jesus experienced this, too. How do you see that happening in our world today? God s love leads us to a humility that bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things (1 Corinthians 13:7). How can God s love lead you to break down barriers between you and people you might consider your enemy because they disagree with you or are different than you? Pray: Dear Merciful God, thank you for loving us beyond anything we deserve. Guide us to love others, especially those we see as different from us. Help us to love as we have been loved through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. RITUALS AND TRADITIONS God s love breaks down all barriers and all loyal(es that separate one from another. Even our faith commitments mean nothing without love. It is a tradi(on for some people to keep a love journal. Pictures, sketches, and notes are captured in the journal as they see or experience images or acts of love in their daily life. Consider crea(ng your own love journal and begin a daily ritual this week of prayerfully reci(ng 1 Corinthians 13:1-13, the great love hymn of the New Testament. We are looking for mentors that will meet with a table of youth each week, join them for dinner and lead an informal discussion (with prepared questions) between 6:30-7:00 Y+. This is an intergenerational opportunity for the youth and members of the Messiah community to get to know one another better. The table talk groups would be the same each week in order to help establish relationships. If you are interested, please contact Teresa Palumbo. Divine Yoga is Back Inner Strength, Divine Connection, February 5-March 12, 5:30-6:45 pm in the Community Room. This is a free yoga practice. However, good will donations will be forwarded to local charities. (& generously matched!) Please bring an open and willing mind, heart and a yoga mat. (A blanket, block and strap are helpful, as well.) The mobility to move from the floor to standing positions, helpful ~but all levels welcome! Donations will benefit: The Demeter Foundation. From the Racial Justice Team A new report from the Columbia University Justice Lab released Tuesday, January 22 reveals: As of 2016, there were 64,900 people under probation or parole in Wisconsin. Wisconsin's probation supervision rate is 25% higher than the State's incarceration rate but is below the National average across all the states. Wisconsin ranks first in parole supervision rates compared to Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan and Minnesota. In 2016, the average length of stay parole in Wisconsin was estimated at 38 months. This is 1.7 times greater than the average across all states (22 months). This is an initiative of Madison-area Urban Ministry (MUM), an interfaith social justice organization with a long history of helping ex-prisoners reenter society. The bakery effort provides 16 weeks of classroom and kitchen training. Students learn food safety, baker s math and job readiness.
