2 August 2018 Heritage Congregational Church 3102 Prairie Road Madison, WI Phone Inside this issue: Sunday School, Camp Pictures, message from the Board of Trustees 2 Adult Education, Mission of the Month, Mission Mazahua Little Pilgrims Learning Center Birthdays, Financials, Attendance, Scripture Readings, Prayer Requests 6 Dates to Remember 7 Church Office Hours Please call or Pastor Cindy to set up an appointment. cabaconhammer@gmail.com Little Pilgrims Hours 6:30am-5:30pm jessmacarlson@live.com (608) Holy Sabbath, day of rest, by our great Redeemer blest the old Fanny Crosby hymn begins. This hymn, that we sang on July 22, speaks of the value of observing a day of rest each week. After all, it is a commandment, not a suggestion! Even God rested after working for six consecutive days! Often, we resist taking a day of rest. We think it makes us lazy, or we just can t sit still when we see so much that needs to be done at home, at work, or at church. We live in a scheduled society, where nearly every waking hour of the day is designated for use. We also live in a society where stress adversely affects our health, often because of this inflexible scheduling! We are given a day of rest from God as a gift. It is not something that God says would be nice if we have the time. It is a commandment that God ordains because it is what is best for us. It is a tangible reminder that we are only human and need rest to be whole physically and mentally. And, it is a reminder that we need to feed ourselves spiritually as well, remembering who and whose we are. If we are called to do God s work in the world, we cannot continually give and work and think without taking a break. The Sabbath is a time to refuel, to fill ourselves with what we need to be able to work with God and give to God s people and creation the other six days of the week. If we only empty ourselves, there will not be anything left to give, for we cannot give what we do not have. Think about it. Trust God s wisdom. Take a break. Feed yourself with rest and God s presence. Put aside all thoughts of laziness or business. There will always be work to do. Let us make sure we have what it takes to do it! Blessed Sabbath to all, Pastor Cindy SUMMER WORSHIP 9:30 AM
3 Page 2 Sunday School We are back from WCA Camp and it was awesome! Thanks to Nurse Marian, and campers Sydney Taylor, Thea Leuschen, Maya Hilgendorf and Erin Henning for leading worship on July 15. You truly demonstrated the power of the Holy Spirit in the life of WCA Camp. It was contagious! (see photos below) Summer Sunday School has been cancelled, because of a lack of teacher volunteers. Please know that worship in August will be friendly and inclusive for Heritage members and friends of all ages! Fall Sunday School will begin on Sunday, September 9. We will use the same curriculum as last year, and are excited to welcome back our teachers after a well-deserved summer break! See you then!! Slender Months of Summer Late summer is historically the most slender time of the year for church cash flow at Heritage. At this time of year the Trustees and Treasurer welcome any efforts by church members to catch up on pledges or even to get a month or two ahead. Even a small extra effort at this time can make a big difference in managing the church s finances. May God bless your generosity and timeliness.
4 Page 3 Adult Education We are edging toward the end of Mark s gospel in August. Join us for the exciting concluding chapters of the Bible s shortest and most urgent story of Jesus life and ministry! Sundays at 11 am in the Narthex! Mission of the Month Snack packs are coming!! In August our mission of the month will be monetary donations to supplement our food donations for the Meadowood Library Snack Packs. Until June, we were making 70 snack packs every other month. Beginning this month, we will be making 100 snack packs! Each bag contains a sandwich, yogurt, fruit, a cookie or bar and a cheese stick. Children are able to pick up this meal from the library, and stay to read or study. For those who are undernourished, it is a true blessing. We all know that children who are given enough to eat are able to concentrate and learn much better than those who are not. Please continue to support this important mission that takes place in our own back yard!! Mission Mazahua Trip (see attached photos) On June 21, five members of Heritage made their way from Chicago to Mexico City, where they met up with other mission travelers for a wonderful meal, and then headed to the Hacienda of Mission Mazahua. Work was done to scrape old paint and apply new in the chapel, flowers were planted, and curtains were sewn our first few days. Sunday was truly a day of Sabbath with worship in a local church, lunch in a private home and a visit to Aculco the cheese-making town of the area! On Monday we welcomed our Special Friends to the Hacienda. Each of us found one special friend who was handicapped physical and/or mentally with whom we worshiped, played games, made crafts and experienced Bible stories. It was a remarkably special time. Friendships were made that will last a lifetime. After our Special Friends returned to their homes, we gathered to give thanks before heading back to our own homes. Our group spent two days in Mexico City where we visited the Zocalo, toured the Frida Kahlo House, took a leisurely ride in a boat on the canal and ate wonderful food. It was a perfect ending to our spiritually rejuvenating trip. Please feel free to talk to Bob and Karen Millholland, Janet Johnson, Pastor Cindy or Michael Hammer if you want to hear more about our trip. We are hoping that more of you will want to go and meet the Special Friends for yourself next year!
5 Page 7 Happy Summer Heritage Congregational Church! We all just love summer time at Little Pilgrims! Life is a bit more relaxed and teachers are able to take their vacations. The children love water fun and walks to the park - just being outside more is great! July has flown by and now we're heading into August already. We have the annual Verona Area School District training for Pre -K on August 16th and August 17th. I am actually hoping to attend a few sessions this year, along with Ms. Nicki. Then we will have our Pre-K "Backpack Days" on August 30th and August 31st. This is a wonderful opportunity for us to meet our new incoming Pre-K families. So, we have our last full month of summer to enjoy before the crazy fun of the school year - with some fall preparation mixed in as well. Families that took the summer off will begin returning in August and we have a new baby starting. Hope you all can soak up the sunshine and enjoy your August. Thank you!
