2 MARCH Prairie Road Madison, WI Phone Heritage Heritage Highlights Inside this issue: Sunday School; Adult Education; Vicinage Council 2 Strategic Planning;; NACCC Fair Share Austin Channing Brown coming to Madison Little Pilgrims Message; Actions from Annual Meeting Mission of the Month Allied Partner Wellness Center Birthdays, Financials, Attendance, Scripture Readings, Prayer Requests 8 Dates to Remember 9 Church Office Hours Please call or Pastor Cindy to set up an appointment. cabaconhammer@gmail.com Little Pilgrims Hours 6:30am-5:30pm jessmacarlson@live.com (608) Lent is almost upon us. We will begin the month of March with the very end of the Epiphany Season, Transfiguration Sunday. On that day, we see Jesus fully Himself, complete, glorified as He will be when His earthly ministry comes to an end. And, as Epiphany ends, Lent begins. It is a season of sacrifice, a season when we are invited by God and given time by the church year to ponder our lives. In this time we may sacrifice something that we do regularly eating chocolate, watching television, playing games on our phone, etc. We may also choose to add some things to our lives during Lent a special prayer time, reading the NA devotional each day, studying the Bible, coming to worship more regularly. The purpose of these subtractions and additions to our daily lives is the same as that of Transfiguration. We are to welcome God into our hearts, that we may more fully become our created selves. We sacrifice time and habits, that we may discover who and whose we are. This is the calling of the season of Lent. Please take a moment to discern how this Lenten season will be observed in your life and the life of your family. Consider what will be most meaningful to you in your relationship with God. And, prepare your heart to walk boldly with Jesus toward the cross. A blessed and fruitful Lent to all, Pastor Cindy Daylight Savings Time begins Sunday, March 10th. SPRING FORWARD
3 Page 2 Sunday School Thank you, thank you, thank you for the beautiful Valentine cards the Sunday School made for some of our older members on February 10. The cards you created were mailed and received, bringing much joy to others. Thank you for sharing God s love is this wonderful way! Our special activity for March will be shopping for the Allied Drive Food Pantry. We are asking that each child bring $10 to purchase groceries. You might be surprised what you can and can t buy for $10. We will leave together from Church at 12:30 on March 24, and head to Pick n Save for our outing. Adult Education Beginning March 13, Heritage invites everyone to join in our Lenten Soup, Worship and Study time. Each Wednesday during Lent, we will gather at 6 pm to share soup and bread. Then, we will share a short worship service in the sanctuary, and complete our evenings with a time of study and discussion in Pastor Cindy s office. The book we will be discussing is Living Budda, Living Christ by Thich Nhat Hanh. This book is inspiring, powerful and thoughtprovoking. You can get it from your local library or a bookstore. Please join us as we delve into fellowship, worship and study during this holy season. In light of our Lenten Study, the Heritage Book club will not meet in March. WCA Vicinage Council and Installation Ozaukee Congregational Church in Grafton will be hosting a Vicinage Council and Service of Installation for their new pastor, Jeff Larson, on Saturday, March 23. Please contact Pastor Cindy if you would like to attend.
4 Page 3 Strategic Planning Here is the latest news from our Strategic Planning Initiative Teams! Visioning (led by Andy Forsaith) We continue to meet to discern the best vision statement for Heritage Church, one that accurately depicts who we are and who God has called us to be. The ideas you shared with us at the January Annual Meeting were very helpful as we continue this important exercise. Marketing (Led by Sue Carter) This team is reviewing many church websites to gather ideas for our own site. The goal is to make it simple, welcoming and user-friendly. We are also investigating better signage options for inside the church building to make it easier for our guests to find their way around. And, we are working with Little Pilgrims to build on the positive relationship we currently have. Worship (Led by Alex Hilgendorf) This group has developed a plan to visit other churches and see what their form of worship sparks in us. We are currently trying out some new things in worship Family Sunday only occasionally during the year, and introductions to the scripture readings. Please let us know your impression of these new things in worship. Lastly, we are reading a chapter from the book, Shift, which focuses on the purpose of worship and how to embody that purpose in the life of the church. If you want to share any thoughts or ideas with any of the initiative teams, please feel free to contact Pastor Cindy or the team leaders. NACCC Fair Share Our National Association needs our support! Each year we give $13 per member to support the operating expenses of the NA, which allows them the opportunity to fulfill their mission of supporting local member churches. We all know how much the NA has done for us loans, refinancing, help with pastoral searches, and the like. Don t we want these services offered to other churches like ours? Please give your $13 (or more if you can) in the month of March, so that we can send the total amount to the NACCC before the due date of March 31. Thank you very much!

6 Page 5 Greetings Heritage Congregational Christian Church! I am hoping for better weather as I write this - February was certainly full of some wintry weather! We have never had so many school closings in my history of working in childcare (17 years)! February has been a busy month! 4k Enrollment is currently underway for the fall of We also had 4k Family/teacher conferences which spanned three days and one evening. All of the classrooms had their Valentine's Day parties - and I was spoiled with treats from children and families! Our families are always so kind on all the holidays and give us treats and gifts, I am so thankful! Not many jobs does one come home with a big treat bag on Valentine's Day at 40 years old! Looking ahead to March, we have the Verona and Madison School Districts' Spring Breaks approaching. That is March 25th to March 29th. Our enrollment is a bit lower that week as many families take vacation and school is out of session. We have lots of staff taking time off too. I am one of those who is taking a spring break with my family. We are combining fun and college tours on our spring break (although UW Madison is still first on her list - phew!). Thanks to Heritage Congregational, all of our families, and my teachers and cook!
