2 January 2017 Heritage Congregational Church 3102 Prairie Road Madison, WI Phone Inside this issue: Sunday School; 2 Sabbatical Q & A; 2017 Officers and Board Members Missions of the Month; Annual Meeting Little Pilgrims 5 January Birthdays; Stats 6 Prayer Requests 7 Dates to remember 8 Church Office Hours Please call or Pastor Cindy to set up an appointment. cabaconhammer@gmail.com Little Pilgrims Hours 6:30am-5:30pm jessmacarlson@live.com (608) I m so excited! I m excited for Christmas, I m excited for New Year s, and I m excited for the time you have given me for renewal, that of the sabbatical. For 9 weeks, between December 26 and February 28, I will be away from Heritage. Don t worry you have great preachers coming to share their faith with you each Sunday, the Board of Spiritual Life will be in touch with those who are ill, and a pastor on call has been secured for times of crisis or pastoral emergencies. All the bases are covered. All will be well with Heritage during this time. (See the special information about what is happening during my sabbatical on p. 3 of this issue of the Highlights.) But what will I be doing, you might ask. Over all, I will be taking time for myself that I may be renewed for ministry and continue to serve you and Christ s church wisely and well. I will read and write, which feed me tremendously. I will enjoy time doing other things that inspire my spirit sewing and knitting and scrapbooking and riding my horse, I will attend the Calvin College Worship Symposium. I will take two vacations with my husband. I will visit friends that I hardly ever see. Mostly, I will pray and contemplate and consider the things of God. And, I will pray for you. You will be on my mind and in my heart while we are apart. I pray that this time will be fruitful and that I will come back to you renewed and ready for whatever lies ahead in the life of Heritage Church. May God be with us all in the next two months, Pastor Cindy

3 Page 2 Sunday School Thank you to the Sunday School students, parents and teachers who worked so hard on this year s Christmas Pageant. Everyone did a wonderful job! In January and February, we will delve deeply in to Epiphany the season of light. We will sing songs about light, read Bible passages about light, make crafts about light, and follow the bright star that led the magi to the young boy, Jesus. We should be very bright by the time we have learned more about Epiphany! We will also enjoy each other s company on an outing January 8 to a movie, and in February as we make valentines for some of our church members. Please join us

5 Page 4 January Mission of the Month-Recycle the Warmth Once again, Heritage will participate in St. Vincent de- Paul s Recycle the Warmth. The official collection is the last weekend in January, but please feel free to bring new or gently used blankets, quilts, and bedding anytime during the month. All the bedding we collect or purchase during this drive will then be given away during the next twelve months to needy individuals and families who come to the Center for Vincentian Charity (2033 Fish Hatchery Road in Madison) seeking assistance from the Society of St. Vincent de Paul. Another way to help is to contribute toward the purchase of additional bedding (new sheets, pillows and mattress covers) to meet the requests we receive. Last year they raised several thousand dollars from people in local church communities and from area businesses. It has been an especially cold winter already. Let s do what we can to help Madison stay warm! HERITAGE ANNUAL MEETING The Annual Meeting of Heritage Congregational Church will be on January 29 th immediately after worship, during coffee hour. Mark your calendar and plan to attend. The Congregation will accept the 2016 Annual Report We will vote on the final budget for 2017 Coffee hour will be hosted by the Board of Spiritual Life, with an emphasis on quiches. All are welcome to bring a favorite quiche to share, as well as other brunch items.

6 Page 5 Season's Greetings Heritage Congregational Church! We had a great turn out for our Thanksgiving Lunch, it was very fun to celebrate with all our families! We had our Picture day in November as well, pictures came in and everyone looks good. December has been a very busy month so far! Today is actually the day we are wrapping up our "sock drive." Thank you to everyone who has donated - many in need will appreciate your spirit of giving! Donations will be given to the Humanity House in Madison. We are so excited to serve the community this way. The sock drive was very successful, so we have been thinking of doing something similar in the summer, maybe toiletries. We are open to suggestions. It is a beautiful thing to teach our children this spirit of generosity! All of our classrooms did gift exchanges and parties this week - fun was had by all! Ms. Nicki was just telling me that this is the first year she has allowed the children to open their gifts and play here. She was always worried parts of toys would go missing, but decided it is not very fun to open a toy, then have to put it away. The kiddos were thrilled! We are having our annual Christmas Pageant on Wednesday, December 21st. I do believe that Brenda in the office put it on the calendar. There is a cookie exchange and a surprise visit from Santa after the program! In January we will be having our Pre-K open house. I am still waiting on the school district to finalize the date with me. Little Pilgrims will also be hosting a Pre-K family Outreach event in Fellowship Hall on January 5th, 2017, from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm. We will be closed on January 16th to honor Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Thank you to all the church members and volunteers for a wonderful year and Merry Christmas! We are eager for a wonderful 2017! Jessica Carlson Director Little Pilgrims Christian Learning Center 3102 Prairie Rd., Madison, WI (608) jessmacarlson@live.com Scrip orders are due by Sunday, January 15th and may be picked up on Sunday, January 22nd.
