1 From Pastor Joel Skindlov Dear sisters and brothers in Christ, June 2018 Newsletter Volume 24 Issue 6 My five-year-old twins recently planted a couple of sunflower seeds for an activity at their preschool class. The seeds were planted in soil, set by a window for sunlight, and watered every day or every other day. Lo and behold, the seeds sprouted, as seeds usually do! As we near the beginning of June, the Memorial Day weekend and transition from Spring to Summer, the rhythms of life change, ebb and flow, as the sun grants us extended days of light, the temperatures rise, the lakes, rivers, and swimming pools invite swimming, skiing, and just wading in the water. I hope that you can pause, enjoy, and connect, with God, with those around you, and with nature, in a slightly different way in these summer months and find ways to work, play and witness to God s continuing presence, purpose, and possibilities in your life! Psalm 150 begins, Praise the Lord! Praise God in his sanctuary; praise him in his mighty firmament! As the psalmist declares the Lord s goodness in creation, the psalmist continues, Praise him for his mighty deeds; praise him according to his surpassing greatness! (Psalm 150:2). Even as we transition into a different season and change of pace, God is still at work in us and through us! How might you nourish the seed of faith in Christ in your life? What brings you life? As we enter the church season of Pentecost, we are reminded of the basic building blocks of life and of faith. The Holy Spirit, Jesus Holy Spirit makes life, growth, and strength possible, willing and working in both seen and unseen ways in our life. Jesus, in the Gospel of John, reminds his disciples, his followers, I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinegrower..abide in me as I abide in you.i am the vine, you are the branches (John 15:1-5, selected verses). How might you carve out time to abide, rest, and be nourished by the living presence of Jesus Christ? Part of the miracle and amazement of the sunflowers that my girls planted was that they were given food, sunlight, and water, yet also time to grow, stretch, rest, and renew! We as people need rest and work, places to be in order to grow and abide in the Lord. What are those places, people, and circumstances that help you be fed and nourished? How might we, as church, help one another grow as individuals and as a community in Christ? I pray that your June finds times of renewal and refreshment in the midst of the chores, challenges, and responsibilities of daily life! Praise the Lord! Praise him in his mighty firmament! Peace, Pastor Joel P.S..In the next few days, I ll be making available a Summer devotional from the Salt Project entitled, Sing! Play! Summer!. Check it out!
2 From The President Happy Season of Green from John book 12 vs 32 And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself. Boy is this year going by fast! It is June already and we now enter the Green Season known as the time after Pentecost. It is also called common time in the liturgical cycle. It is the longest of times in our liturgical cycle of our church year. The colors in the church turn green and stay that way for the most part until the start of the Advent season, which is the start of a new church year, in December. I enjoy the rhythm of a liturgical church year cycle. We focus our faith life to the season we are in and keep our hearts and minds on Jesus. Enjoy the Green Season! Peace be with you! 7 Summer concerts are coming soon! This past year, we have partnered with the North Indian Trail Neighborhood Council who are actively fundraising at their monthly meetings and secured a grant from the city toward our concerts. We were also blessed with a $1,000 grant from the Advent Lutheran church endowment fund. The additional funding made it possible for us to add an additional concert and book a couple of bands that might otherwise have been out of our budget. Here s the lineup: Sunday, July 1, 6 PM (Concert kickoff) Lilac City Community Band Shostakovich to Sousa Wednesday, July 11, 7 PM Ben Klein as Elvis Classic and Hot Rod Car Show at 6:30 PM Wednesday, July 18, 7 PM Bossame Haley Young and the Modern Hits to Classics Wednesday, July 25, 7 PM Floating Crowbar Traditional Irish Music Wednesday, August 1, 7 PM Soul Proprietor Motown, Funk, & Soul As always, we have Kati Lutz from BCI Creative to thank for our concert poster, and we are very lucky that she gifts us her talent and skill at graphic design each year. Please mark your calendars and look for concert information on Facebook. Liking and sharing our posts give us more exposure and free advertising. Invite your friends to like Prince of Peace on Page 7
8 Caritas Monthly Report April 2018 Caritas Outreach Ministries Served 747 individuals from 334 households: Children (0-18) 228 Adults (18-54) 327 Seniors (55 & over) 192 We distributed 11,477 lbs. of food through the Table of Plenty and Food Pantry. We helped 4 families with emergency utility assistance for a total of $ We connected families with $2,024 worth of hygiene and cleaning supplies. We gave out $40 in fuel vouchers for transportation assistance. We had 54 volunteers putting in 484 hours. Caritas is being given a unique opportunity to serve our NW neighbors in need! We will be building Little Free Pantries ( ) later this summer. These are small mounted cupboards that will be stocked with non-perishable pantry staples and information about Caritas. Our goal is to meet immediate need where it is, out in the neighborhoods! And connect families with Caritas for more stable assistance. Many of our clients come through our doors after a friend or neighbor shared our contact information. A lot of people in need simply do not know that assistance is available and live silent lives of desperation. Caritas is looking for churches and individuals who would be willing to host a ready-made and fully stocked Little Free Pantry on their property. Every Pantry will include a copy of the Good Samaritan Act and Food Keeper Guide and will be restocked regularly. This is also a great opportunity for neighbors to contribute directly to a Little Free Pantry or seek help during that short gap in income, or a sudden illness, or personal loss during a natural disaster. Kelsie Rowland Operations Manager Caritas Outreach Ministries CARIATAS SUMMER LUNCH PROGRAM MISSION SCOPE -Our objective, as it has been in the past years, is to provide children who normally receive free/reduced lunch through the WA state school systems with breakfast and lunch foods. This program would begin as soon as school is out - about the middle of June. Our next Caritas Sunday is June 10 and would be a great time to focus our donations on those items that would be needed to implement this program.
