1 April 2019 Newsletter Volume 25 Issue 4 From Pastor Joel Skindlov Dear sisters and brothers in Christ, Why do you look for the living among the dead? He is not here, but has risen. 6 Remember how he told you, while he was still in Galilee, 7 that the Son of Man must be handed over to sinners, and be crucified, and on the third day rise again. 8 Then they remembered his words, 9 and returning from the tomb, they told all this to the eleven and to all the rest. Jesus Christ is risen today! Blessed Easter! Okay..so by the time you read this, it will not technically be Easter, and yet, Luke s story of Jesus resurrection begins to push through the quiet, dormant soil of our hearts, minds and lives. That in the midst of our daily lives, our successes and disappointments, Christ s new life makes itself at home in our life! In some ways, we can skip right over the pain, suffering, and loneliness that Christ experienced in his trial, crucifixion and death. That as we look around our lives and world, our response might more authentically resemble the disciples when they hear the news of the resurrection they call it an idle tale, aka, a load of manure! Since Jesus announcement of his journey to Jerusalem, in Luke 9:21, Jesus has been telling his followers about his mission toward his death and resurrection. That this impossible promise of Christ s resurrection changes the view of the disciples then and now! They came to the tomb, taking the spices that they had prepared. It was the first day of the week, and the women arrived expecting to finish the work they had started a couple days before. It was a typical Monday morning, when all of a sudden, something was different, out of the ordinary. What might it have seemed like? How might you have responded? They found the stone rolled away from the tomb, but when they went in, they did not find the body. While they were perplexed about this, suddenly two men in dazzling clothes stood beside them (Luke 24: 2-4). Perplexed, confused, and amazed all the human emotions and responses you could imagine. The surprise and astonishment could not be covered up! The women tell the disciples and it seemed to them an idle tale. Trust and questions, faith and doubt, all rolled up into one, yet the angel messengers declare, He is not here, he is risen! What might that look like for your life of faith, for our life together? How might the promise of Christ s resurrected life adjust your vision, your noticing, and encourage and empower you this day and week? God s blessings to you, as the living Christ be with you today and always! Peace, Pastor Joel

3 Greetings from the Stewardship Committee! STEWARDSHIP Jon and Karen Heimbigner We both grew up on small wheat farms in Eastern Washington, Jon raised in the Ritzville/Odessa area and Karen in Reardan. We were both raised in good sized families, Jon having four siblings and Karen from a family of seven children. Money wasn't plentiful for either of us so dollars were very precious. Family was very important and so was our faith, evidenced by attending Sunday school and church weekly, attending Bible school, singing in the children's choir and both being confirmed in our respective churches. Karen was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith and became the church organist her freshman year in high school. Jon was a member of the Philadelphia Congregational Church in Ritzville. We believe that this foundation and principal of faith was the start of being good stewards to our God. As farm families, we witnessed the importance of being good stewards of the land that would produce a crop that feeds the family year around. Also, in a small way, planting large gardens each year provided additional food at the table and that whole process was a labor of love in addition to being good stewards of the land that is part of God's Kingdom. After high school, we both headed off to college to earn a degree, Jon to SFCC and EWU obtaining a degree in finance /banking and Karen to EWU earning a degree in Family and Consumer Education. Church attendance wasn't every Sunday, but the foundation had been laid in our younger years so coming back was a easy habit to get into. Karen got her first teaching job in Odessa and Jon was completing his last year of college at EWU. We didn't know one another in college, probably a good thing since Jon was earning a minor in Economics and social activities. Jon's dad taught HS in Odessa in addition to being a farmer. He introduced Karen to Jon (set up) which led to dating, engagement and marriage in June of After marriage, Jon became a Lutheran and weekly church was back on the radar in our different bank assignments (Clarkston, Ellensburg, Yakima) before returning to Spokane. As we began to raise a family, important principles like paying yourself and God first before your regular living expenses was a priority. Paying yourself is saving and investing for the short and long term plus we put God at the top of that list since all that we have and do on this earth belongs to him and we are entrusted to take care of it and share with others. Once we settled in Spokane, our church membership got transferred to Ascension Lutheran and it was here we fell in love with a pastor, Joe Aalbue, that mentored and most of all, taught us that stewardship comes in many forms. Volunteering your time and talents is doing God's work and is equally important to writing a check each month. He also taught that stewardship can be in form of sharing God's dollars with other non-profits and 501 (c)(3)'s that benefit our community by giving back. Spokane has been our home since 1974 and is where we raised our three children. They all attended college, obtained a degree and came back to Spokane to find great jobs, raise their families and now give back to this community that has been so good to us. We believe that this is all part of God's plan, to do his work and be good stewards of what he provides us and in turn, to share with others. Our goal has always been to give back to our church and other entities with at least 15% of our gross income by paying them first. What a joy and a blessing Prince of Peace has been to us and we feel fortunate to be a part of this church family. Thanks be to God! Page 3

4 Bring your favorite yard tools and dig in for a fun morning! Spring Clean Up! Saturday, April 13th at 9 a.m. Prince of Peace Lutheran Church Lawn Mowing Schedule The mowing schedule is posted on bulletin board next to kitchen. Each signup is for a twoweek period. It will be necessary to use the riding lawn mower and the walk behind mower. It may be a good idea to partner with someone. Depending on the time of year, the areas shouldn't have to be mowed more than once a week. If you haven't mowed before contact Joe Rock, Mel Nebelsieck, Bernie Polikowsky One of us would be happy to walk you through the procedure. We need all the help we can get to keep the grounds looking nice. Feel free to sign up for as many segments that you can. Weeding Chart The new weeding chart has been posted on the bulletin board near the kitchen. Please note that each area is numbered. If you or your family would care to be responsible for keeping the weeds pulled and shrubbery trimmed it would be greatly appreciated. Having people be responsible for each area makes the spring cleanup before Easter go much faster. A number of you take pride in certain areas and if you want the same area again... best get your name on the chart. Any questions contact Mel Nebelsieck. POP Decorating Team Are you interested in being on a team to beautify the sanctuary for Easter (and maybe for other holidays as well)? If so, please contact Sue Parrish.
