of the Brethren November/December 2018 United of Christ As is our tradition, we will offer our Stewardship Pledges on Sunday during worship, this December 2. Two biblical phrases come to mind: In Such a Time as This (Esther 4: 14) and For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also (Matt 6:21) year on In the fullness of the idea that stewardship is more than our finances, that in caring for gifts which are ours to use but not to own, life can flourish our trees, our crops, our water, our brothers and sisters, ourselves, our time, etc. In this spirit you are invited to contemplate both the story of Esther whose courage was called for in a precarious time for the Jewish community, and Jesus words in his famous sermon where we find the beatitudes, the Lord s Prayer, and his wisdom about not storing up treasure as if we own all that is in our care. The Esther story invites us to be in this moment in our history, our culture, our valley, and our congregation as we each consider financial stewardship for next year. The Matthew passage is a helpful prop as we are in this moment. With these passages in mind, please ponder who you are and what you bring to Sunnyslope at such a time as this: What is your energy level? How do you describe yourself as a participant in this congregation? What is an action you are committed to right now? A passion? A question you have? A service you long to see or are already involved in? What other questions or descriptions do you bring? Lois Tate has provided small squares of material and colorful markers so that we can write our thoughts on the squares and then hang them on a line going across the rock face in the chancel, for us to look at and ponder before we bring our pledges forward on December 2nd. We are invited to write down some words or phrases in the spirit of the above questions, and come forward during a time for Stewardship to attach them to the line. As we see our words/phrases before us, in our descriptions and longings we have a picture of who we are together as the body of Christ, and what we represent as stewards for such a time as this, as we prepare to make our financial pledges to our Sunnyslope for For such a time as this, Debbie THE SUNNYSLOPE CHURCH sunnyslopechurch@nwi.net CHURCH SERVICES - 10:25AM PHONE: CHURCH OFFICE SECRETARY HOURS MONDAY thru THURSDAY 8:30AM to 1:30PM 2
REFLECTIONS THE SUNNYSLOPE CHURCH Preaching Schedule for November/December November 4 November 11 November 18 November 25 Debbie Roberts Bob Jackson Debbie Roberts Carol Bowman December 2 December 9 December 16 December 23 December 30 Debbie Roberts John Braun Debbie Roberts Colleen Michael Fifth Sunday carol sing ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Change in Debbie s presence at Sunnyslope Several weeks ago it was announced during worship that my hours would be changing regarding my weekly presence at Sunnyslope. To explain, I discussed with the Leadership Team how to make the best use of my time with you regarding visiting, office presence, church meetings, and community involvement. We decided that my presence might be more greatly felt in the above areas if I were to travel to every other week for longer periods of time, rather than each week for only two days. So beginning mid-november I will be at Sunnyslope and in the community Wed late afternoon through Sunday on the weeks before I preach. This means that since I preach on the 1st and 3rd Sundays, I will be in Wed late afternoon-sunday on the days before and up to my Sunday presence with you. I hope this isn t too confusing, and especially I hope that you will feel my presence more consistently as I am there for longer periods. We will give it a try and I invite your feedback as we go! -Debbie If you would like her to visit you or to talk to her on the phone, please contact her at or droberts8487@gmail.com ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Fifth Sunday Planning Our yearlong experiment with making fifth Sundays special by stepping outside the usual Sunday morning program will conclude on December 30 with an informal carol sing. Earlier this year in April Steve Gregory led us in a Jewish Seder meal. Edie Jackson got us all up and moving in a SAIL class (Sustaining Active and Independent Living) in July. Merry Titus led a meditation experience in September. Looking ahead to 2018 we find fifth Sundays will occur in March, June, September and again in December. What shall we do on those Sundays? The worship committee is looking for suggestions. If you think of a topic, an activity, a project, or an experience that would be of general interest to the congregation you are encouraged to share your ideas with the worship committee. 3
Meet our Office Assistant I would like to introduce myself; my name is Mayra Tamayo and I am the new office assistant here at Sunnyslope. Here are a few things about me; I was born and raised in ; I have a 4 year old daughter;her name is Bella. Bella and I love to cook, bake, shop, enjoy the outdoors, and we love to travel. I am very happy and excited to be a part of your church. My office hours will be Monday through Thursday from 8:30 am 1:30pm. I look forward to meeting each and every one of you. -Mayra LET S PREPARE FOR ADVENT AND CHRISTMAS! On Sunday, November 25, immediately following a slightly shortened worship, we will be decorating the church for the Advent and Christmas (and Epiphany) seasons. This is always a great time to be together and prepare the way for celebrating the birth of Jesus. There will be a light lunch provided at the end of our work, so plan to join us for fun and fellowship. See you there! The Worship Committee 4
Sunnyslope works to feed the hungry Can we raise another $55?? As we are reminded in Mathew 23: 35, For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in.., Sunnyslope continues to feed the hungry. Since 2009 we have supported Foods Resource Bank, now Growing Hope Globally. The new name better reflects our Christian mission and dedication to helping people in need help themselves through agricultural development. While this is a big change, we can assure you that the following will NOT change. We Remain a community of people motivated by our faith to help those in need around the world Continue to focus on sustainable solutions to help hungry people lift themselves out of poverty Need YOU to help us make a lasting difference in our mission to reduce world hunger At Sunnyslope we have raised $21, in nine years and helped 390 persons go from being food insecure to providing food for themselves. That is to be celebrated! How can we continue to do this work? At Growing Hope one person goes from experiencing food insecurity to a full belly on only $55 for three years of training. On December 1, Sunday to Feed the Hungry, please bring your corn bags (or any other container) full of coins. Scour under those cushions, check under the bed, dig deep into your pockets for those extra coins. These coins will be added to our yearly donation and sent to Growing Hope. Our donation will be matched 100% by an anonymous donor at Growing Hope. Let s raise an addition $55 to add to our yearly donation. Let s continue to follow Jesus. Let s add hope to one more person s life. Let s do this! Questions? Contact Mary Katherine Deen at mkydeen@yahoo.com or

REFLECTIONS THE SUNNYSLOPE CHURCH SPECIAL OFFERINGS NOVEMBER & DECEMBER November Special Offering Christmas Baskets As we do each Christmas Season, we will have the Giving Tree with information about all the family members in the Five Families we will be providing for. Along with the assortment of gifts, we also provide each family with a $50.00 gift card for the families to provide the groceries that will give them the makings of their Christmas dinners. The Special Offering will buy those gift cards, so we hope we will all give generously in the Spirit of the Season. Thank You. December Special Offering The New Community Project encourages and supports education for girls in countries that don t encourage girls or women to go to school. Countries like South Sudan and Myanmar receive support and encouragement from people like the New Community Project to establish schools for girls. Our special offerings are a great help for girls in numerous places around the world. Most of us are familiar with World Service. CWS is a long running service, supported by numerous denominations, including the United of Christ and the of the Brethren. Through our offerings of food, clothing, warm bedding and other things are distributed in areas of poverty and special needs. This December s offering is specifically for blankets, especially appropriate this time of year. We have been very generous in our monthly offerings. If they could give us personal, face to face Thank You the recipients of caring offerings would surely do it. We are assured that we are appreciated. 9
