3 Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time GOSPEL MEDITATION July 8, 2018 CATHEDRAL STAFF Cathedral Office (513) Rector ext 2655 Reverend Jan Kevin Schmidt Parochial Vicar ext 4018 Reverend Raymond E. Larger Deacon Michael Trimpe ext 4026 Deacon David Klingshirn If you have been closely following the Sunday readings, today's Gospel could sound a bit like a broken record. Four weeks ago, the Gospel told of Jesus visiting his home of Nazareth and being poorly received by his family members. Jesus had attracted a large crowd as he preached, and his concerned relatives came to bring him home. Jesus, they thought, was out of his league. Today Jesus takes things further. He returns to Nazareth. Rather than preaching from his house, he enters the synagogue. He speaks eloquently. The listeners acknowledge that "wisdom has been given him" and recognize the "mighty deeds wrought by his hands," but it is too much for them to bear. "Is he not the carpenter, the son of Mary?" The listeners know his whole clan, his male and female relatives. Jesus as carpenter was acceptable. Even Jesus as fringe preacher was interesting enough to draw a crowd. But Jesus as authoritative teacher is too much. "They took offense at him." As Christians, we have known the truth of Jesus' identity since we were first introduced to him. He is fully human and fully divine. He is the second person of the Trinity. It could be easy to look down on these 1st century listeners for their lack of faith. But where do we expect to learn our own lessons? The more we age, the easier it is to believe we understand the world and how it works. We have experience with people, with the Church, with politics, and with the affairs of daily living. We have developed criteria for first impressions. We categorize. Today we remember that the Christian life requires humility. Jesus' listeners have an expectation of how things should be, and their lack of faith causes doubt in others. "He was not able to perform any mighty deeds there." Do your assumptions limit your perspective? Who can you learn from that you did not expect? 3 Music Director ext 4013 Mr. Anthony DiCello adicello@cathedralaoc.org Business Manager ext 4016 Mr. Ed Birck ebirck@cathedralaoc.org Pastoral Associate ext 4015 Mrs. Debbie Birck dbirck@cathedralaoc.org Maintenance Supervisor ext 4032 Mr. Joe Kennedy jkennedy@cathedralaoc.org Secretary ext 4010 Mrs. Stephanie Ramsey sramsey@cathedralaoc.org Sacristan ext 4017 Mr. Robert Harpenau bharpenau@cathedralaoc.org Organist ext Mr. Blake Callahan bcallahan@cathedralaoc.org
4 Cathedral of St. Peter in Chains SACRAMENTAL LIFE FAITH & OUTREACH Cincinnati, Ohio WELCOME! INFANT BAPTISM Baptisms for children under the age of 7 are held privately at the convenience of the family and presiding clergy. Please contact the Cathedral Office for details and to make arrangements. CONFIRMATION Catholic adults, whom for various reasons have not received the Sacrament of Confirmation but would like to do so, please contact the Cathedral Office to make an appointment with one of the priests on staff. EUCHARIST Communion to the homebound can be arranged by simply calling the Cathedral Office for details and to make arrangements. Parishioners who require low-gluten hosts due to allergies or other medical conditions may contact the Cathedral Office and we will be happy to make the proper arrangements for you to be able to receive Communion at Mass. WANT TO BE CATHOLIC If you are an adult (over the age of 7) and are already baptized in another Christian tradition the process for Full Communion with the Catholic Church is as simple as contacting the Cathedral Office for an appointment with the Rector, Fr. Jan Schmidt. In the event you are not Baptized, the process for becoming Catholic is called the RCIA or the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults that requires a more in-depth preparation and period of study. For further information please contact Mrs. Debbie Birck through the Cathedral Office. ANOINTING OF THE SICK Please do not wait until the point of death to receive this sacrament. A careful judgement about the serious nature of the surgery or illness is sufficient. This sacrament may be repeated in the event the illness worsens. For those who are near death the Church offers Confession, Anointing of the Sick and the Eucharist as Viaticum or Food for the Journey. Contact the Cathedral Office to make arrangements or in an emergency please feel free to call the Rector, Fr. Jan MARRIAGE Any resident Catholic of the Archdiocese of Cincinnati may celebrate their marriage in the Cathedral with permission of their rightful Pastor. Please contact the Cathedral Office for details and to make arrangements. Please contact us at least 6 months (minimum) prior to the tentative wedding date. FREEDOM TO MARRY An annulment is more accurately described as a Declaration of the Freedom to Marry. If you are a Catholic or are planning to marry a Catholic and you have been previously married and divorced we would like to assist you in the healing that is necessary in order to move forward with your life. Part of this healing is the effort to obtain an annulment or a Declaration of Nullity that then provides you with the freedom to marry in the Catholic Church. We want to help, it doesn't cost anything so, please contact the Cathedral Office to set an appointment with one of the priests on staff. PRIESTHOOD, RELIGIOUS LIFE AND THE PERMANENT DIACONATE If you think you may have a vocation to priesthood, religious life or the permanent diaconate please speak with one of the priests on staff or contact Fr. Dan Schmitmeyer for priesthood and religious life or Deacon Mark Machuga for the Permanent The Cathedral would like to welcome our newly registered parishioners: Dale Jones Mario & Tatiana Letona Gregory Pio Marshall ST. VINCENT de PAUL We take calls each week and do visits on Saturday mornings at the Cathedral from 9:00 am to 11:30 am. All are invited. We cover the downtown and Over the Rhine areas. Many places refer to the people they help as clients, but to us they are neighbors. Most of our calls are for help with rent, Duke bills and food. Often, we help neighbors avoid evictions or keep their heat and electricity turned on. We also provide beds in addition to furniture and clothing/household vouchers that can be redeemed at one of our SVDP stores. We also give out holy cards and encourage our neighbors to deepen their relationship with God. The motto of the society is No form of help is foreign to the society. We cannot do this work without your help. To learn more call ACTIVE PARISHIONER STATUS Who is a Parishioner If you are regularly attending Mass here at the Cathedral you are a Parishioner. However, if you are not registered then it is a bit difficult for us to communicate with you and without communication there really isn t much of a relationship.
