3 Page Three Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time July 1, 2018 FROM OUR PASTOR Dear Parishioners, Thanks to all parishioners who came out and supported our annual Parish Picnic on June 24 th. The weather was perfect, the food and drink were great, and a good time was had by all. A special thanks to the parish staff, the Knights of Columbus, and other parishioners who helped to set up, cook, serve, and other tasks that made the day so enjoyable. Also thank you to the Battaglia family who donated the Italian sausage and Italian ice. This Wednesday, the Fourth of July, we celebrate the birth of our great nation. As we witness the governments in many countries throughout the world we see many people who live under dictatorships and other forms of rogue regimes. As a result the population of these nations suffer from poverty, lack of educational opportunities, an unjust judicial system, and many other travesties. We here in America are blessed to live in a country where we have fair elections, due process of law, liberty, justice, and freedom of religion. Although we do not always agree with the decisions of our three branches of government, we hope and pray that they always have the best intentions of holding up the American way of life that was set down by our forefathers in the Constitution. While celebrating the Fourth of July, let us remember and appreciate the great country we live in, the freedoms we are guaranteed, and the people throughout the years who have laid down or risked their lives for the United States of America. Our Mass on the Fourth of July will be at 9:00am. Please note that the Parish Administrative Office will close at Noon on Tuesday, July 3 rd and closed the entire day on July 4 th. In the second collection today, we are supporting Pope Francis in his charitable works. The Peter s Pence Collection is taken up worldwide to support our brothers and sisters on the margins of society, including victims of war, oppression, and natural disasters. In this Jubilee Year of Mercy, the collection is an opportunity to join with Pope Francis and be a witness of charity to our suffering brothers and sisters. Please be generous in today s collection.

In the past few years we have witnessed the devastation of life and property through earthquakes and hurricanes. So many lifted their lament to God, simply asking, "Why?" This is an honest expression of anger toward a God who we believe is the giver of life. When we lose a loved one, we can wonder why the presence of Christ is not enough to make that person rise, even from death, as did the little girl in today's Gospel passage. Again we raise our voices and ask, "Why?" At moments such as these, let us make the prayer of the psalmist our own: "Hear, O LORD, and have pity on me; O LORD, be my helper."
