Four weeks ago, the Gospel told of Jesus visiting his home of Nazareth and being poorly received by his family members. Jesus had attracted a large crowd as he preached, and his concerned relatives came to bring him home. Jesus, they thought, was out of his league. Today Jesus takes things further. He returns to Nazareth. Rather than preaching from his house, he enters the synagogue. He speaks eloquently. The listeners acknowledge that "wisdom has been given him" and recognize the "mighty deeds wrought by his hands," but it is too much for them to bear. "Is he not the carpenter, the son of Mary?" The listeners know his whole clan, his male and female relatives. Jesus as carpenter was acceptable. Even Jesus as fringe preacher was interesting enough to draw a crowd. But Jesus as authoritative teacher is too much. "They took offense at him." As Christians, we have known the truth of Jesus' identity since we were first introduced to him. He is fully human and fully divine. He is the second person of the Trinity. It could be easy to look down on these 1st century listeners for their lack of faith. But where do we expect to learn our own lessons? The more we age, the easier it is to believe we understand the world and how it works. We have experience with people, with the Church, with politics, and with the affairs of daily living. We have developed criteria for first impressions. We categorize. Today we remember that the Christian life requires humility. Jesus' listeners have an expectation of how things should be, and their lack of faith causes doubt in others. "He was not able to perform any mighty deeds there." Do your assumptions limit your perspective? Who can you learn from that you did not expect? Mission Appeal On the weekend of July 21-22, Fr. Celestine Byekwaso from Holy Family Parish in Marinette will be visiting Our Lady of Lourdes. Fr. Celestine represents the Roman Catholic Diocese of Kasana Luweero, which is located in the cities of Kasana and Luweero in the Ecclesiastical province of Kampala in Uganda. Save the date! 3 FOURTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME JULY 8, 2018 Who do you say that I am? (Matthew 16:15) Peace to all, Dear brothers and sisters, being with all of you for the past two years, I have learned many good things in my life as a Christian, as one among you and for you as your servant pastor. As St. Augustine said, With you I am a Christian, and for you, I am a shepherd. I came to you all without knowing anything about any of you, this place, the faith of this community, your lifestyle, your psychology and spirituality, etc. But I knew well that I was going to a community of believers who shared the same faith, same baptism, and same sacraments, and believe in the same Lord Jesus (cf. Ephesians 4:4-6). That is what made me comfortable as I came to you; I did not want to know much more than that, for I did not want to serve you with a prejudiced mind. Please allow me to quote the words of St. Paul, When I came to you brothers, proclaiming the mystery of God, I did not come with sublimity of words or of wisdom. For I resolved to know nothing while I was with you except Jesus Christ, and him crucified. I came to you in weakness and fear and much trembling, and my message and my proclamation were not with persuasive (words of) wisdom but on the power of God. (1 Corinthians 2:1-5) When there were different opinions about Jesus among the people, Jesus asked his own disciples their opinion about him. Jesus didn t ask them this question to get praise. It was to know whether they understood him correctly by being with him day and night, seeing, witnessing, and experiencing his life, teaching, and ministry. As I complete two years with you (one year as associate pastor and one year as your pastor) as your servant shepherd, I humbly seek your feedback on my life and ministry in your midst. Again this is not to get any kind of praise from any of you, but rather to know whether I am somewhat on the right track in leading you as your pastor with all my limitations. I would appreciate (if you wish) if you could let me know your concerns by word or a short letter, text message, or , the areas you find that I need to improve. What did you expect from me as your servant shepherd? Have I been to fulfill your expectations? Do you feel alienated from me for whatever reasons? Are you able to understand my style of functioning, in spiritual and administrative matters? What do you want me to change in my ministry? My language - are you able to catch up to a certain extent, if not completely? What else could we do together to improve the quality of our faith as a living community of God s people at OLOL? Do you feel free to approach me for your spiritual needs? Are you able to regard me as your own family member? Do you feel comfortable enough with me to share the struggles that you go through in your personal life and in your family? Do you believe that I will be of any help to you in your difficulties and struggles? These are only some of the areas, but you are most welcome to tell me anything you feel will help me and our community here. I know you are making a tremendous adjustment with me. I appreciate the same and am grateful to you for your generosity. Our learning never ends until we find completion in our Lord through passing away from this world of incompleteness and vanities of life. I am humbly open to listening, learning, and amending. Please consider the request of your brother in Christ without any premature judgement. I am delighted to serve you as long as the Lord wants me to be here with you and for you. You are my brothers, sisters, mothers, fathers, and friends. I have no other agenda here than to be fully at your service for the good of the souls. God bless everyone. From 1:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. we will be part of the Bible study with the residents. Students should be dropped off and picked up at Nicolet Terrace. See what it s all about Wednesday, July 25: Habitat for Humanity/Restore Volunteer Day. 10 a.m.to 2:45 p.m. We will meet at OLOL at 10 a.m. to make a meal for the volunteers and family for Habitat for Humanity. We will deliver the meal and eat with them at 11:30 a.m. We will then volunteer at the Restore, in Ashwaubenon, from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. Mrs. LaCrosse will transport the first 5 students to sign up. After that, we will need another adult to drive. Thursday, July 26: YM Saint Study, 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. We will watch a Saint movie, have great discussions and lunch. This will be a casual time to learn about a few Saints while spending time with friends. All middle and high school students are welcome. Bring your friends...catholic or not. Paper Drive FYI The next Paper Drive will be scheduled near the start of school...stay tuned! 4 OLOL School News Our Lady of Lourdes along with other GRACE schools received almost $154,000 from the Wisconsin Department of Justice to upgrade our school security measures. OLOL will be using the funds to make our front entrance doors shatter proof as well us upgrading our intercom system. We would like to thank the Wisconsin Department of Justice for their assistance. Our Lady of Lourdes is still accepting students for the school year. Catholic education at OLOL centers on the Catholic faith and assisting out students in reaching their fullest potential, It is a collaborative environment in which administration, staff, and parents work together to guide out students to become well educated missionary disciples of Christ. 90% of our graduates are on their high school honor rolls. The LOURDES Way Jeffrey Young - Principal Meet the Sacristans Robin Therese A Pastoral Associate for St. Mary & St. Francis Xavier Parishes in East De Pere, Robin Therese volunteers her time on the weekends to serve as a sacristan at Our Lady of Lourdes. Robin was a Pastoral Associate at OLOL from , and during that time, she served as a sacristan for most Masses. When she was asked to help again a year ago, Robin decided she would like to do it as a way to reconnect with the wonderful people in our parish. She is also a Eucharistic minister, lector, and assists with hospitality. Robin describes OLOL as a warm and welcoming parish. It feels like home, she said. Robin s family includes her adult son, Greg Cribb, who lives in Phoenix, AZ, her father, and eight siblings. In her free time, she enjoys reading, bicycling, and spending time with her friends. Mark Your Calendar! The Our Lady of Lourdes 18th Annual Packer Party is set for Sunday, October 7, at the Swan Club in De Pere. It s the Packers vs. Lions with a noon kick-off! Mass Intention Requests for 2019 Mass intentions for 2019 are now being scheduled. You are allowed to select one weekend Mass and one weekday Mass or two weekday Masses. 5 Liturgical Ministers Summer Schedule The summer schedule for liturgical ministers will run through September. Sheets are posted on the clipboard on the lamp table to the left of the sacristy for you to sign up. Please check the schedule throughout the summer. If you are at church one weekend and notice openings for the following weekend, please feel free to fill an open slot. Thank you! EPH June Update In recent months, we have seen two trends evolving for the families served though our partnership. The first trend is the opportunity for and securing better and more sustainable employment. For many of the families, it is full-time employment. Securing gainful employment is one of the first steps in returning to self-sufficiency. However, this is not enough. Employment with budget counseling must go hand-in-hand. While bringing home the bacon is essential, so is knowing how to manage income when personal and family needs are significant. The second trend is one that is impacting our community at large the interrelationship between mental health and addictions. As such, our partnership is in the process of building additional relationships within the community to actively support families suffering from these illnesses. Please keep these families in particular in your prayers. (Fourth and last in the series of articles on the sacrament of baptism) The decision to have a child baptized is a decision that should be made long before the child is born. If the couple didn t become a part of a parish family before or shortly after their wedding, they should consider it at this time. Being a member in good standing of Our Lady of Lourdes Parish Family (being present at weekend assembly and participating in parish life) prior to the baptism is a requirement. It is a requirement that can be altered a little bit because of other family affiliation in the parish. Being members at another parish prior to joining Our Lady of Lourdes will also be accepted. It is not uncommon for young couples to call and join the parish after becoming pregnant or shortly after the birth of their child. In many cases, it is an occasion for the couple themselves to come back to church. As always, no one is ever turned away for any reason at all from membership. Attending a baptism class is another requirement for first-time parents. It is a short, one-night class that explains what baptism is, and what it should mean to the child and to the parents. Parents can call the Parish Office or watch the bulletin for times and dates. After these requirements are met, the parents can call the Parish Office to set a date for baptism. Baptisms can be done at any of the three weekend masses, 4:30 on Saturday, 8:15 or 10:15 on Sundays. It can also be done after the 4:30 and 10:15 masses. Only one child will be baptized at each Mass or after Mass. There are some weekends when a baptism cannot be done, either because Fr. Benny or Deacon Mike may not be available or some other event is taking place within the parish. Baptism will also not be done during Lent. Parents are asked to have a couple of dates in mind when calling. There are some instances where we will baptize a child without meeting these requirements, one being a life-threatening health issue. There is a $25 fee for baptism, payable to the parish office when the date is confirmed. This fee includes a $10 stipend, set by the diocese to go to the parish, and the other $15 to cover expenses. Parents and godparents will be given a booklet and each child will receive a baptismal candle and a certificate suitable for framing or to put in their baby book. Parents or expectant parents can call the parish office at with any questions regarding baptism or membership in the parish. 5

6 A Day in the Life of Jesus - A Retreat for Grandparents and their Grandchildren Thursday, July 26, 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Do you ever wonder what life was like for Jesus in relation to his grandparents, Joachim and Anne? Spend a day at beautiful St. Norbert Abbey with your own grandchildren (grades 1-7 of the academic year) and learn about a day in the life of Jesus.
