3 Page 3 From Deacon Gene Fadness Idaho may be one of the few places left in the United States where you can find shepherds. Many of the Basque people who settled here were shepherds. Still, to many of us, all the scriptural references to shepherds, to the sheepgate, or the sheepfold, seem a bit strange. But this was not so for the people who lived at the time of the prophets and at the time of Christ. Israel had long been a shepherding people and none of these details would have been lost on Jesus listeners. Israel s greatest king (David) was a shepherd. Perhaps the most famous Psalm, the one we read in today s Old Testament reading, speaks of a God who is a shepherd, who leads us to green pastures and gives us so much that there is nothing else we shall want. Today s Gospel reading refers to both good and bad shepherds. We ve seen plenty of examples in the history of our own church of bad shepherds. This, unfortunately, is not new for the people of God. If you want to read an interesting contrast between bad shepherds and good shepherds, read Ezekiel 34. In the first half, God condemns shepherds of Israel who feed and clothe themselves rather than the sheep. The weak you have not strengthened, the sick you have not healed, the crippled you have not bound up, the lost you have not sought, and with force and harshness, you have ruled them. Because of their wickedness, the people of Israel are scattered and have become food for all the wild beasts, since there was no shepherd. Some religious leaders and philosophers throughout history have claimed to be saviors, claimed to have all the answers, but they really were consumed by pride, greed and lust. Others sincerely thought they could make the world better, but did not have enough wisdom to provide the human family with the kind of hope we long for and need. The second half of Ezekiel 34 goes on to say that God is the true shepherd and He will, even after the sheep have strayed, seek the lost, and I will bring back the strayed, and I will bind up the crippled, and I will strengthen the weak There are lots of would-be shepherds in the world today, voices clamoring for our attention that claim to have the truth. How do we know which is the voice of the Good Shepherd? Today s Gospel reading says the sheep know the voice of the shepherd because they have listened to it and so they recognize it. While there have been many false teachers, both inside the church and out, the church as a whole will never lead us astray. Jesus has promised that even the gates of hell will not prevail against it. So, we have both the authority of Scripture and Tradition. Read God s word and listen to it proclaimed in Mass. There are lots of places to go for Tradition. I recommend the Catechism of the Catholic Church. Make a point to read a few paragraphs every day. It draws upon scripture and upon the writing of the church fathers, the saints and the mystics. These are the voices of the Good Shepherd who will not lead you astray. Remember, we worship a Good Shepherd who goes out of his way to seek and find the lost. If you are genuinely seeking Him and not your own way, you can be supremely confident that He will not let you go astray. Queridos hermanos estamos iniciando el mes de mayo que es el mes de María. Si nosotros en nuestras oraciones pedimos a María que interceda por nosotros tenemos la seguridad que Dios la escuchará, pues así como es la Madre del hijo de Dios es también nuestra Madre y una madre nunca abandona a sus hijos; recordemos lo que sucedió en las bodas de Caná cuando se terminó el vino, María les dice: Hágan lo que Jesús les diga, pues María como Madre de Jesús tenía la seguridad que su hijo haría algo para cubrir la necesidad que se presentaba. Así que mis hermanos, en este mes de mayo enfoquémonos en la oración tomando como modelo a María; pues Ella como verdaderos hijos nunca nos desampara, observemos que en la oración principal de María que es el Santo Rosario María aparece en todas las formas y rogando siempre por nosotros. María como Madre de Jesucristo un modelo a seguir, María primero en todo, Madre de todos los santos, Virgen de las vírgenes, Virgen del santísimo rosario. Así que este mes de mayo ofrezcamos con gran devoción y dedicación nuestra oración por medio del rosario a María madre de Dios y madre nuestra. Su hermano en Cristo ~ José Ayala Dear brothers and sisters, we are beginning the month of May, the month of Mary. Mary, first disciple and believer. Mary with obedience accepts becoming the mother of Jesus because at the time of the Annunciation, without hesitation, she answered: May it be done to me according to your word. She obeyed and heard the word of God and lived according to that word. Therefore, Mary is presented as a model of the church by the persevering prayer that she always prayed. If we ask Mary to intercede for us while we are praying, we have the assurance that God will listen to her, for the mother of the Son of God is also our mother and a mother never abandons her children. Let us remember what happened at the wedding at Cana when the wine was finished. Mary asks the servants to do what Jesus tells them, for Mary as the mother of Jesus had the assurance that her Son would do something to cover the need that was presented. In this month of May, let us focus in prayer by taking Mary as our model. As her true children she will never forsake us. Notice that in the Hail Mary, the main prayer of the Holy Rosary, we ask Mary to intercede for us. Mary is the Mother of Jesus Christ, a role model, Mary first in all, Mother of all saints, Virgin of virgins, Virgin of the Blessed Rosary. So this month of May, we offer with great devotion and dedication our prayer through the Rosary to Mary, Mother of God and our mother. Your brother in Christ ~ Jose Ayala
