3 Page 3 A message from Fr. Faucher I want to begin today by thanking all of those who remembered and sent me greetings on my recent birthday. You are all so kind. Today s first reading is one of those examples where, for some unknown reason, the decision has been made to present only part of the story. We have a little bit of Chapter 5 of the Second Book of Kings, but to understand what this story means, you have to read all of chapter 5, not just this little bit. I assume that the reason for not telling whole story was so that it would fit with the Gospel, but the whole story is so vast and rich, it should be told. Both this section of 2 Kings and the Gospel are about leprosy. We do not really know what biblical leprosy was or its medical connection to the modern condition of leprosy, but it was contagious and those with it had to be shunned and driven out of the community. Naaman, a Syrian officer, had the money to seek a cure, and he did so from Elisha. He is cured by the water of the river. He returns to give thanks to the prophet who will not accept anything. Naaman does give Elisha the best gift of all- he converts to the worship of the true God.. In the Gospel, Jesus meets ten lepers and cures them. Only one of them gives thanks, and he is a Samaritan. Jesus tells him that your faith has saved you. It is a faith shown in the simple act of giving thanks. Paul, in a continuation of the second letter to his disciple Timothy, reminds Timothy that If we have died with him, we shall also live with him. It is our faithfulness to God which will bring us salvation. These readings, and the ones to come in the following weeks, seek to put us in a place of thankfulness and fidelity to God. But this becomes even more true if we read all of Chapter 5 of 2 Kings. I do ask you to do that. ~ Peace, Fr. Faucher, Pastor Emeritus Mensaje del Padre Jesús Breve Historia del Rosario. Octubre es el mes del rosario, aprovecho la ocasión para escribir una breve historia del rosario. Comencemos con el Dios te salve María : en el año 650 ya se encontraba en el Misal Romano. Hacia el año 1100, el rezo del Ave María era ya frecuente en varios países. Lo hacían las personas que no podían rezar el Salterio; es decir, los 150 Salmos. En su lugar, repetían 150 veces el Dios te salve María. Hacia el año 1483 se empezó a añadir la segunda parte: Santa María Madre de Dios. Pero no era todavía una costumbre el rezar el Ave María completa. En el año 1659 el Papa Pío V, en una carta o Encíclica recomienda a todo el mundo rezar el rosario como se reza ahora. El Papa Pío XI dijo en 1937 que: el Rosario ocupa el primer puesto entre las devociones en honor a la Virgen y que sirve para progresar en la fe, la esperanza y la caridad. October is the month of the rosary and I am taking this opportunity to write a brief history of the rosary. Let's start with the Hail Mary prayer. In the year 650, it was already in the Roman Missal. By 1100, the recitation of the Hail Mary was common in several countries. This form of prayer was used for people who could not pray the Psalter, that is, the 150 Psalms. Instead, they repeated 150 times the Hail Mary. Towards the year 1483, the second part, Holy Mary, Mother of God", was added. Praying the full Hail Mary was not yet the habit. In 1659 Pope Pius V, in a letter or encyclical, encouraged everyone to pray the rosary as it now reads. Pope Pius XI said in 1937 that "the rosary ranks first among the devotions in honor of the Virgin and is used to help us progress in faith, hope and charity." Pope John Paul II, shortly after being elected, uttered these words: "My favorite prayer is the rosary." I invite you to pray the rosary, especially as a family. THE SACRAMENT OF CONFIRMATION Baptism, the Eucharist, and the sacrament of Confirmation together constitute the sacraments of Christian initiation. The reception of the sacrament of Confirmation is necessary for the completion of baptismal grace. For by the sacrament of Confirmation, [the baptized] are more perfectly bound to the Church and are enriched with a special strength of the Holy Spirit. Hence they are, as true witnesses of Christ, more strictly obliged to spread and defend the faith by word and deed. CCC As part of the Year of Mercy proclaimed by Pope Francis, we will offer the sacrament of Confirmation on November 27th for adults who have not previously received the sacrament. QUIET ~ PRAYER ~ CHRIST ~ PEACE ADORERS NEEDED Please consider joining our small group of adorers who spend an hour every Wednesday visiting with Christ in the Blessed Sacrament. Adoration takes place after the morning Mass until 3:00 pm. We each commit to a specific time, but have substitutes for days we can't be there. Can you commit one hour a week to grow more intimate with Christ? Or, can you sub for adorers who need to be gone for illness, surgery, vacation, etc.? Drop in anytime. The evening includes Falls Brand bratwurst, compliments of Independent Meat Company. All donations from the bratwurst and half of the beer sales will be donated to St. Mary's Food Bank. PINOCHLE CLUB INVITATION Trump suit, family, hundred aces, and marriage are but a few of the terms used in this favorite card game. If you enjoy pinochle, plan to join us. We'd love to have you. Tally sheets are available in the narthex of the church. Write down the number of rosaries you said during the week on the sheet and put it in the tally box.
