3 Page 3 For the past four weeks the readings have been every word of chapter 5 of A message from Fr. Faucher the Gospel of Matthew. But now, as that chapter ended, we skip to verse 24 of chapter 6. Because Lent begins this Wednesday we will not go on to the 9 th or 10 th Sunday of ordinary time, but if we did there are many more skipped verses of chapters 6 and 7. Today s Gospel is fine, but I really like the skipped verses, Matthew 6: 1-23, better than the ones used, verses The skipped verses are used for a weekday Mass much later in the year. But the verses we do have are indeed powerful. They are about the ongoing struggle each of us has to deal with the necessities of life. Jesus talks about, What are we to eat? What are we to drink? What are we to wear? and simply dismisses those questions as not worthy of consideration. I can remember these verses being used in the 1960s to prove that Jesus was the original hippie. The temptation of all those preaching on these readings is to take the easiest line, You cannot serve both God and money, and the rest of what Jesus says. The problem is what Jesus means in the rest of the verses. Jesus was not a hippie, nor was he irresponsible, nor lazy. He was a teacher, explaining to people what serving money means. It means that a person has his or her own needs as first priority and not the needs of others. That attitude destroys the meaning of all the teachings of Jesus. An interesting friend, many years ago, who was Mafia connected, was the most generous person I knew, but also one of the most selfish. One of many true examples he was out in the winter and saw a homeless person freezing. My friend took off his expensive overcoat and gave it to the man. But then he got cold himself and stole a coat at gunpoint from the next man he saw. He wanted the pleasure of giving, but not at his expense. Jesus is telling us that if we give to others what they need, we will always have what we need. Tough message, but true. Wednesday is Ash Wednesday and next Sunday is the First Sunday of Lent. Our pastor, Father John Worster, has asked me to write each week during Lent, and I will do so. Una buena manera de aprovechar la Cuaresma es llegar a la Pascua reconciliados con Dios, en paz con El y con los demás. Deseo a todos una Santa Cuaresma. Easter is the celebration of Christ's ultimate triumph over evil, sin, the devil and death. The best way to celebrate the victory of Christ is in our own triumph over these enemies in our personal lives, in our family and in our community. That is why the Church invites us to prepare with penance (fasting, abstinence) and prayer to defeat those enemies who want to stand in the way of our salvation. Take Lent seriously. A good way to take advantage of Lent is to arrive at Easter reconciled with God, and at peace with oneself and with others. I wish you all a holy Lent. 4 Page 4 MASS SCHEDULE FOR ASH WEDNESDAY MARCH 1, :30am Mass (English) 12 noon (English) 6:00pm Mass (English) 8:00pm Misa (Español) While Ash Wednesday is not a holy day of obligation, we invite everyone to join us in this beginning of the lenten season. If you are not able to attend the Ash Wednesday services, you may pick up some ashes in the priest sacristy the following weekend after Mass. A blessed and holy Lent to all. SAINT MARY S SCHOOL is accepting applications for an after-school child care assistant. Duties include assisting the director with supervising students in indoor and outdoor activities and helping with homework. Applicants must enjoy working with children, must be safe-environment trained and must have first aid and CPR certification. Work hours are 3:10 to 6pm school days, 7:30am to 6pm on school holidays and also summer. Applications are accepted until the position is filled. Pay is based on experience. LENTEN RITES LENT began as a preparation period for those being initiated into the Church at the Easter Vigil and so it continues today. Catechumens (those who are unbaptized) and candidates (those baptized in another Christian community) celebrate several rites during Lent. The Rite of Sending takes place next weekend, the First Sunday of Lent, at St. Mary s during the 10:45am Mass. This rite acknowledges and supports their faith journey during this period of Purification and Enlightenment. They are sent to celebrate the Rite of Election at St. John s Cathedral on Wed. March 8, at 7pm, when they gather with other parishes in the diocese to declare their intention to join the Church. The rites of the Scrutinies are celebrated on the third, fourth and fifth Sundays of Lent. Now called the Elect, the catechumens and candidates are dismissed at weekend Masses to examine their lives in light of the Gospel. They will receive the Sacraments of Initiation at the Easter Vigil at St. Mary s on Sat. April 15, 8pm. We are privileged to pray with and for those coming into the fullness of faith in Christ. These are rich Lenten experiences for all of us as we are inspired to deeper faith ourselves. All Fridays of Lent are days of abstinence from meat and meat products for those who are 14 years of age and older. Regulations Ash Wednesday, March 1, & Good Friday, April 14, are days of fast and abstinence for persons between the ages of 18 & 59. Fasting consists of one full meal, two lesser meals, and no eating between meals. The retreat will be led by Father Brad Neely, pastor of All Saints Parish in Lewiston, and Hermit Sister M. Beverly of Marymount Hermitage in Mesa. The weekend includes daily Mass, opportunities for the sacraments of confession and anointing of the sick, spiritual direction, and five conferences based on Scripture with suggestions of passages for private prayer times.
