3 Page 3 SERMON ON THE AMOUNT Dear Parishioners, Money is not a very interesting topic. But there are a number of you who want to hear from me about our financial situation. Let me share some comments. First and foremost, thank you for your donations to St. Mary s parish and school that make possible the full spectrum of ministries that go on here. At any time, you can approach me or Monica Pittman, our business manager, and full details of our finances will be shared with you. Members of our Development and Finance Council and School Governing Board are preparing budgets for our next fiscal year which begins July 1st, Thanks to Monica and Tammy Emerich, school principal, we always have a good idea of how our finances are developing, and because of their good work we can help our parish leaders make sound financial decisions, especially in the areas of salaries and maintenance. Many thanks to Bishop Peter. Together we have worked out a plan to pay back to the Catholics of Idaho the 1.2 million dollars we owe them. Bishop Peter and his staff have forgiven a substantial amount of our accrued interest debt. We are reducing the debt, and in 2018 after we roll out our strategic plan, we will conduct a capital campaign to pay off the debt and do extensive maintenance on our facilities. Many thanks again for your continued support of our parish, the Saint Mary s food bank, and in this Lenten season the Bishop s many valuable ministries which are made possible by your generous contributions to the Idaho Catholic Appeal. Fr. John Worster ~ Pastor A message from Fr. Faucher On this second Sunday of Lent, we have some serious material in the readings, material preparing us for the coming Scrutinies the next three weeks, and then the Holy Week readings. The serious matter today can be put in the form of two questions a friend once asked me, Is there a God, and even if there is, so what does He care? That s what the readings today are about. Is there a God, and if there is, so what? We look at that first reading from the early part of the book of Genesis. The Lord said to Abram, Go forth from this land. I will make you a great nation. I will bless you. I will make your name great. I will bless those who bless you. All the communities of the earth shall find blessing in you. Then, a thousand or more years later, Paul writes to his disciple, Timothy: God has saved us and called us to a holy life, not because of any merit of our own, but according to His own design. This is a fundamental question. Is there a God, and if there is, so what? Is there a plan of life? Is there any kind of order to how we live?. The answer in the Scriptures, and the answer in Christianity is, Yes, indeed there is. This plan of God s begins in the story we have in Genesis where He says to Abram, I m going to make a covenant with you. I m going to make a relationship with you, and I m going to be your God and you re going to be my people. If we do this right, you will achieve eternal salvation because that s what I want for you. What I want is for you to be happy. I want for you to be fulfilled, and the way you are fulfilled, is to open up your souls and let me in. We need to let the grace of God into our lives. That s the plan; that s God s plan. That s the whole story of the Old Testament. The story of the New Testament is Jesus coming to fulfill that plan telling us about that plan, living out that plan God s design, a design for all of us and a design for each one of us. That is where the apostles were just before Jesus gets ready to go to Jerusalem. It had been a tough time for them, a very tough time for them. So we have this extraordinary event in today s Gospel. Jesus comes forward and he takes Peter, James and John up the mountain. Unlike any other place in the New Testament, Old Testament figures, Elijah and Moses, appear. There s no appearance of people nor manifestations like that in the Scriptures. It is very rare. Moses. Moses is the law. Moses is the one who gave the Law. Moses is the symbol of Judaism. Moses is this whole sense of the power of God and all it means. Elijah is the prophets. Elijah is all the promises of God, and all the things God has said. So Jesus appears with Moses and Elijah and is the fulfillment of the Old Testament. And it says, I am one of these. All that you have been taught about Moses and Elijah, all you ve been taught about the law and the prophets this is true. This is God s plan; this is real. Then we have Peter, and Matthew is much kinder to Peter than Mark is. In Mark, Peter begins to just sort of babble; he doesn t know what he is saying, and we wish Peter had been quiet and written down what Jesus, Moses, and Elijah have said. Instead, Peter somehow gets involved with tent making. But God the Father then speaks and he says, This is my beloved Son with whom I am well pleased. Now Jesus is getting ready to go die; Jesus is getting ready to go fail; Jesus is ready to go on the cross, and God the Father says, I am well pleased with Him. Listen to Him. Then Jesus, as he comes down the mountain, says a strange thing to his apostles. What you would think he would say is, Don t tell anybody till after I m dead. That s what you say to people. But that isn t what he says. He says, Don t tell anybody until I ve been raised from the dead. It s not the death that s important. It s the Resurrection it s Easter because in God s plan, what looks like a defeat is not a defeat. What looks like a failure is not a failure because the goodness of God will always triumph over evil. With all of that in mind, we are now ready to celebrate the Scrutinies. 4 Page 4 A HEARTFELT THANK YOU Dear Parents and Parish Members, Thank you very much for your donation during the collection on Ash Wednesday. We collected $335. The money will be used to help offset the cost of the new timer for the boiler which heats the school building. Our parish school building is used every day by our school students and by the parish on the weekend for Religious Education. The boiler benefits us all! Thank you again for your support ~ St. Mary s School THE SEVEN LAST WORDS OF CHRIST This presentation is an opportunity to examine the Scriptures and reflect on Jesus passion through his last words. These words are full of meaning and relevance to our life experiences and may further open our hearts to the Lord s presence in this Lenten season. Presentations will be Wed. March 22, at 7pm and Thur. March 23, at 9am. Both presentations are in the parish office. Regulations Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are obligatory days of fasting and abstinence for Catholics. In addition, Fridays during Lent are obligatory days of abstinence. The norms on fasting are obligatory for people age 18 through age 59. When fasting, a person is permitted to eat one full meal, as well as two smaller meals that together are not equal to a full meal. The norms concerning abstinence from meat are binding upon members of the Latin Catholic Church from age 14 onwards. ST. PATRICK S DAY DISPENSATION Bishop Peter Christensen has dispensed Catholics of the Diocese from abstaining from eating meat on the Feast of St. Patrick, Friday, March 17. TOO MUCH CANDY? Did you buy too much candy for Valentine s Day? A suggestion for discarding your plethora of goodies is to donate them to Fr. Camacho s very large candy jar on his desk. You may drop the candy off at the parish office anytime during the week. The children who visit him enjoy these special treats. Thank you for your sweet generosity! ANNUAL IRISH FEST will be held on Saturday, March 18, from 6 to 11pm at Bishop Kelly High School in the "Reg" gymnasium. Tickets are $40 per person or a table of 8 is $300.
