3 Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time ~ Fifth Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario Page 3 A message from Fr. Faucher Today s readings are ultimately about human dignity and self worth. In the Gospel Jesus says, "You are the salt of the earth. But what good is salt if it has lost its flavor? Can you make it salty again? It will be thrown out and trampled underfoot as worthless. Matthew 5:13 This is another one of those verses that make no sense today but made perfect sense in the time of Jesus. Modern salt making means that salt is always good. But at the time of Jesus, salt, by the way it was made, contained many extra things in it and it could easily go bad. Bad salt had to be thrown away, and nothing would grow where bad salt had been placed, so it was used in walkways and door entrances, where it could be trampled underfoot. Salt was expensive, and necessary for life, so good salt was prized and bad salt meant a loss financially and in social standing. Jesus goes on to say that good deeds should not be hidden but should shine forth like a lamp, so that our heavenly Father will be seen as the origin of those good deeds. In this second section of the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus is again speaking both about and to the human dignity of the poor farmers of Galilee who are his people. They have been told by the scribes and priests that they are worthless, and Jesus is telling them the opposite they are expensive salt and radiant light. What this means in specific, practical terms is the topic of the first reading, the wonderful chapter 58 of Isaiah, and will be explained even more in the next two Sundays. All of the Sermon on the Mount is about human dignity and personal self worth. I received a letter this week telling me of the death of an old friend who taught me some of what the Sermon on the Mount means in practical terms. Making a long story short [which is always difficult for me to do], when I was in Washington DC in the mid 1990s, I met and became part of a group of about 25 men and women, mostly high CIA officials, who got up very early each Sunday to take bread to the city s homeless shelters. We then had Mass in the Georgetown Crypt chapel. I asked why they did it and my friend simply said, We, by our education, our jobs and our responsibilities are people of privilege. Decisions we make effect the entire world. We need to do this to keep perspective that all of the gifts we have been given must be used for the honor and glory of God. We may feed the poor material food, but they feed us spiritual food, and that is the food for human dignity and self worth. When one of the group was killed in the line of duty, there was a loaf of bread and a bowl of salt on his casket. We take salt and light for granted in our society, but these commodities were more precious in ancient cultures. Just as now, salt was used in Jesus time for flavoring, as a preservative, and as a healing agent. Similarly, the widespread use of electricity in the modern world makes us less aware of the value and importance of light in our lives.
