1 Salem Lutheran Church SHALOM 602 W Townline Creston, Iowa office@salemluth.net Pastor Brian Jack pastorbrian@salemluth.net Sunday Services 9 am Sunday School 10 am Worship October 2015 Newsletter And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and to be with you forever. Jesus (John 14:16) October is here and so is more help, thank God! Stop in during the morning hours and meet our new secretary Clicia Farnsworth! As more and more activities begin to take place at Salem the absence of a secretary was being sorely felt by all, but rejoice with me that Salem once again has someone to organize our coming together and our going out. Many thanks to all who volunteered their time to help us in our interim. Jesus foretells of the reality we re living in now in John chapter 14. He s going away, but he s asking the Father to send help, which Jesus returns from the grave to deliver himself in John 20:22. Here Jesus breathes out the Holy Spirit onto/into the disciples that are gathered there and equips them to do the work of the coming kingdom. This same Spirit is poured out onto you and me in our baptism, we receive the Spirit of Jesus Christ. We are equipped to participate in the work of the kingdom. We share a deep relationship with Jesus Christ of sharing the good news with the whole world of just how much God loves each and every last one of us and how far he is willing to go to show us His love and keep us close to him. In addition to teaching and preaching the good news of Jesus Christ and worshiping God together on Sunday mornings there are several other ways we as a congregation are participating in this ministry. Sunday evenings in Financial Peace University we re talking about what God has to say about money and how we use it. We re talking about how the way we use God s gifts shapes the way our children and our community see their relationship to God s gifts. Alpha Youth began at the end of September where youth ages 8 th grade and up in our community are able to gather and discuss important questions of faith. During our first session the point was raised that we ll spend 6 months of our entire life sitting at red traffic lights. Will you spend that much of your entire life talking about your faith, talking about what this gift of the Holy Spirit that Christ has given you is all about? Beginning on Tuesday nights on October 13 th we ll start a 6 week course called Holding Your Family Together. We ll discuss simple ways in which parents with children of any age can begin to have meaningful conversations with their kids about faith from birth on into the rest of their lives. Simple things that anyone with 5 minutes can do to see to it that more of our life is spent talking about faith and why it matters than we spend sitting at red traffic lights. The gift of Holy Spirit is indeed just that, a gift. Like any other gift by definition it s not something that you earn, nor do you have to do something to pay it back, it is freely given for you to enjoy (though it was not free of cost for the giver John 16:7). In the same way taking any number of these classes will not earn you anything nor do you need to take one to show due respect. However, they may well be a means for you to talk about this gift of your faith with family and friends in everyday Continued on the next page situations. One of our hopes here at Salem is to be a community that reflects Christ s gift of the
2 advocate, the helper, the Holy Spirit. We hope that through our teaching and preaching we re enabling you to live into that spirit of being an advocate for others, that they too would come to know the one true help and hope for this life and the one to come in Jesus Christ. 4 It s time! The annual CROP Hunger Walk is this Sunday, Oct. 4th at 3 pm (Registration at 2:30). It s not too late to participate! Come walk with us (meet at the gazebo by the hospital). Bring some canned goods that will be distributed among MATURA, Congregational UCC food pantry and food pantries in Lorimore and Afton and/or cash. CROP walks are the granddaddy of all walks and help people all over the world including millions of refugees. Not only do people receive food and water but they are also taught life changing skills so they can support themselves and their families. The need is great. Walkers to date include Pastor Brian and Cari, Jodi Hitz, Rodney Mahn and John & Lynne Schlaht. If you can t walk, please sponsor one of them. And look for our Change for Change jar on Sunday! Bring your spare change, put it in the container, and we will add it to our CROP Walk total for Salem. Thanks to all who have contributed so far. We can make a difference! Twenty-five percent of the funds raised by the CROP Walk will stay in Union County to help needy families. The remainder of what is raised by the CROP Walk is used for food and relief projects sponsored by Church World Service in this country and around the world. The walk is sponsored by the Union County Ministerial Alliance. THRIVENT will provide $600 in matching funds. We need volunteers for Saturday, October 3, to take a 1 or 2-hour shift at Fareway or Hy-Vee to collect donations of food and money! This is an important part of our fundraising and is so easy. Please call the Schlahts ( ) if you can help. Healthy snacks will be provided before and after the walk. You may chose a 2, 4, or 6 mile route. If this sounds daunting, please walk as far as you can. The important thing is to collect pledges and participate on Sunday, Oct. 4. If you can t make it to the CROP Walk on Oct. 4, you can still collect pledges and walk on a different day. Our goal is $9,000. Last year we raised $8, Our Military Members Chase Rutledge, Erica Rutledge, Mike Crigger, Str. Airman Travis Mathis, SRA Zacary Sedlmayr and Isaac Sedlmayr. We ask God to lead the men and women who are protecting our country by serving in the military at home or abroad. Please keep them and their families in your prayers. 5 Holding Your Family Together Class - Imagine raising a daughter who wouldn't think of going to bed without talking to you about her highs and lows every night, even though she's 16. Imagine raising a son who won't turn out the lights without asking you about your day, praying for your highs and lows, and blessing you. Imagine growing up in a home where everyone feels loved, valued and heard every night; a family that seeks God's wisdom, will and Word at the center of their lives; an intimate community where every night is an experience of caring, sharing, comfort and peace. Having a close and caring family is a beautiful dream, but a dream without a workable plan isn't worth a nickel. However, a dream with a workable plan may be worth a million bucks. Brian ( or prbrianslc@gmail.com) for this 6 week class, every Tuesday evening at 6 p.m. here at Salem starting October 13th. $27 per family for course materials.
