3 CLC Social Ministry and Mission February 2017 Speak up for people who cannot speak for themselves. Protect the rights of all who are helpless. (Proverbs 31:8) Social Ministry Emphasis for February. Each month the Social Ministry highlights a special giving opportunity. The monthly emphases for February is Hilltop Neighborhood House. Hilltop Neighborhood House. February s emphasis is to provide monetary and volunteer support for Hilltop house. Hilltop House is located on a hill in a neighborhood west of Valparaiso University where social service needs are real for the families and children living there. Hilltop is able to provide as a health care provider Medicare and Hoosier Healthwise benefits to those in Porter County living below the poverty level (estimated to be 9000 children and 4000 women in Porter County). A gift of $50 permits Hilltop to provide child care, health care, and community improvement activities within a child s own family setting (also your contributions may qualify for Indiana s Neighborhood Assistance Tax Credit). On Tues. evening, Feb. 21, at Christ Lutheran, Hilltop will have its 18 th annual Heartwarming Soups dinner plan to attend if you can (CLC members & Youth will be involved in serving and cleanup for the dinner). Our congregational financial goal for February is $2000 (a combination of this month s giving, a budgeted amount, and any Thrivent matching funds). Use your weekly worship service envelope and indicate Hilltop on the line marked Social Ministry with the amount you wish to give in addition to your regular giving. Thank you for your support of monthly social ministry needs. Hilltop Neighborhood House Annual Soups Dinner Getting to Know CLC SIGN UP NOW--February 21, pm at Christ Lutheran6pm New to this congregation? Interested in learning more about CLC? The Lutheran tradition? Twice a year, "Getting to Know CLC" gives us an opportunity to get to know one another better, talk about faith, learn about this community, and what it means to be a member of a congregation. Our Spring gatherings will be Wednesdays March 8, 15, and 22 at 6pm in the Brides Room (107) - we look forward to seeing you there! For more information or to let us know to expect you, please Pastor Erica: pastorerica@clcvalpo.org A Message from Pastor Tim February, 2017 There is an old proverb I once heard: Those who sing, pray twice. The Bible is certainly filled with singing as prayer! What s the first thing the Israelites do on the far side of the Red Sea? They sing (Exodus 15)! Jesus and the disciples sing at the Last Supper (Matthew 26:30). All of heaven is joined in constant singing around God s throne (Revelation 4). As Lutherans singing is woven into our being from chanting ( The Lord be with you, and also with you ) to Bach to Luther s own hymns to our favorites from the 1800 s to newly-composed hymns we already love and some we re still learning. For us as Christ Lutheran, this is most certainly true: we sing. Music is important to us! We love our Adult, Children s, and Bell Choirs, we sing at our Sunday School opening, we revel in the special music at Christmas and Easter, we even sing in our Bible studies and committees and at Council meetings. Think how the music of Holden Evening Prayer in Lent, or Taize in Advent, resonate with our souls. Think how we have enjoyed our contemporary groups and solos at special events or leading worship. As the people of God gathered to be Christ Lutheran Church, we sing! And so there are some recent developments I want to be sure you ve heard about. First, our Music Director, Karen Stingely, has announced her retirement at the end of this June. Karen has served among us for 30+ years in so many roles it s hard to keep track! Her ministry among us has shaped our worship and our life together in ways we don t even realize. How we give thanks to God for her! In these coming months we re looking forward to finding ways to honor her service and give thanks to God. I know you will join me in that wonderful task. With Karen s announcement we are thinking ahead to a search process for a Director of Music, and recognize it is important for us to consider our current organ since the quality of the instrument available makes a big impact on any candidate s interest in any position. As you know, our electric organ is 30+ years old and is dependent on 4 vacuum tube amplifiers we can no longer replace or repair. Karen periodically needs to bang on the organ to get keys to sound, which is not good news! It is also not surprising, since the life expectancy of an electronic organ is years; we ve definitely gotten good use out of it. For many years now our Worship & Music committee has talked about the current organ s precarious state, and so has our Council. Back when we designed our Sanctuary we dreamt of a pipe organ to fill our space, lead our singing, and draw our hearts to God; that s why we have that rounded shelf above the entrance, and behind the screens above is a room designed and dedicated to house a pipe organ. We ve certainly dreamt and wondered and thought about this. Meanwhile, at the end of last year we heard of a Lutheran congregation in St. Louis that is closing, has a marvelous pipe organ they *love* and have kept very well, and want to give it away. We said, Tell us more? Our Council has appointed a team to gather all the possibilities and ideas and options out there for an instrument to lead our worship, to help us in our continuing conversations. Meanwhile we invite you to be part of the conversation as well in your small groups, over lunch, in your committees, what are your favorite songs and hymns? Which ones lift your soul and draw you closer to God? When is it hard to sing, and what would help you feel more confident in joining our songs of praise and worship? We re in the early stages of dreaming and wondering, and we look forward to visioning together. This is an exciting time for us together, we get to dream and wonder about how we sing our prayers to God, listening for his future, knowing that God is shaping us for and toward something. Join me in singing thanks for his plans for us! Peace, Pastor Tim

If you are a member of CLC with a preschool aged child, you should find information in your church mailbox or extra forms will be available in the East Link, front Narthex, and outside the preschool office. Please call Jen Gottlieb at if you would like to schedule a tour or have any questions. We would love to have you become part of the LLP family! Lots of Christmas Blessings During the Christmas season we were blessed to be immersed in the story and good news of Christmas. The children were treated to an Advent story and planting event. After planting an Amaryllis bulb the children were treated to watching it rapidly grow and patiently waiting while it took it s time to bloom. All the Pre K and Young 5 classes shared the Christmas story with their families by using story and song in the annual LLP Christmas Program. The Beginner classes celebrated with crafts, songs and treats! LLP Carnival Help Confirmation students & Mentors: All confirmation students and their mentors, or interested CLC middle school or high school students or adults, are invited and welcomed to sign up to run a game at our LLP carnival, April 20 th. We hope you will consider helping us! LLP has all the game materials and prizes. All we need is your willingness and time to run the game. This is one of the preschool s major fundraisers of our year. Please be on the lookout for the sign up in the East Link on the Preschool Bulletin Board (coming early March) to help or call for more information. Carnival Donations: We are also in need of carnival donations including: New coloring books; Boxes of crayons Reading books Stickers Unopened Happy Meal toys Mission Statement & Educational Philosophy Christian Mission Statement: Little Lamb Preschool, in union with Christ Lutheran Church, serves God by shepherding God s children as we nurture the whole child in partnership with families. Educational Philosophy Statement: We are a Christian preschool whose goal is to provide excellence in education and opportunities for faith formation in a loving, safe learning environment for every child. Based on evidence that shows young children learn best through play, we provide developmentally appropriate opportunities for them to explore, make discoveries, and learn respect for themselves and others. We firmly believe that all children are wonderful gifts from God to be cherished and nurtured. In collaboration with families and Christ Lutheran Church, we encourage and support children to learn and grow socially, emotionally, academically, physically, and spiritually.

5 PERSONAL CARE KITS PROJECT BE PREPARED! It's coming soon. As Lent approaches, it is time once again to begin our BASKETS OF PROMISE project to complete Personal Care Kits for Lutheran World Relief. It is time to reflect on the many material blessings we take for granted here in our country and a chance to help others much less fortunate in many other parts of the world. Each Sunday during Lent we will be emphasizing one particular item which goes into the kits according to the following schedule: Sunday, March 5--Soap (Bars need to weigh at least 4 ounces) Sunday, March 12--Bath Towels (Lightweight, dark color) Sunday, March 19--Combs (Sturdy, not fine teeth) Sunday, March 26--Nail Clippers Sunday, April 2--Toothbrushes Sunday, April 9--Your Choice (Whichever items you would like to bring) Be watching in the Gathering area for a display which will give more details about each item that we need. Someone somewhere in the world will be blessed by your generosity as we assemble these kits. Thank you so much for participating as we help to make the world just a little bit brighter for someone in need. CL SENIORS & FRIENDS Christ Lutheran Church Thursday, February 23, :30 11:00 a.m. in the Church Hall Welcome & Refreshments Devotions Continued conversation about our service ministry & other matters of interest Prayers Program: Watch for the big reveal in The Scribe For more information please contact Roma Schmidt or roma-48@hotmail.com If you have any questions, you may contact Dave Keammerer at dnssk@frontier.com or An invitation to think about your child's readiness to receive Holy Communion At CLC we welcome young people to God's table whenever families discern that they are ready. We gather those families together each year for a time of conversation about the gift of Holy Communion: a time to equip parents with the language to help their children understand, a time to explore together how Christ comes to us in this meal, and a time to marvel together at the mystery of this gift. If you feel your child is ready - or perhaps if they've already been receiving communion but have not had this time of conversation - please mark your calendar for our "Communion Conversations" - the morning of Saturday, March 25! As the date approaches, we will put a sign-up sheet in the East Link and the Sunday School registration desk, so that we can group children by age/find the best time to gather. Wednesday Lenten Dinners During Lent, you are invited to join in Lenten dinners at 5:30 p.m. Wednesdays at CLC, before each 7:00 p.m. evening service. These begin on Ash Wednesday, March 1, and continue through April 5. Please sign up for each meal in advance in the East Link so that the cooks know how many to expect, and consider bringing a dessert to share. A free-will offering will be collected at each meal. Come and join in the fellowship! As the season of Lent approaches, the Worship and Music committee is looking for individuals or groups to make the evening meals, March 8, 22, and April 5 are still available. For more information, please contact the office. Remember when signing up to also ask form volunteers to set-up and clean-up the hall. NATIONAL WEAR RED DAY FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 3, 2017 Support Go Red For Women by participating in National Wear Red Day on Friday, February 3, 2017 and donate to help fund research during American Heart Month. Why Go Red? Cardiovascular disease in the U.S. kill approximately one woman every 80 seconds. The good news is that 80 percent of cardiac events may be prevented with education and lifestyle changes. Go Red For Women advocates for more research and swifter action for women s heart health. That s why this year we are asking that you wear red on National Wear Red Day and Donate to Go Red For Woman. By doing so you help support educational programs to increase women s awareness and critical research to discover scientific knowledge about cardiovascular health. And don t forget to make your heart health a priority. Schedule your Well-Woman Visit, a prevention check-up to review a woman s overall health so her doctor can measure blood pressure, check cholesterol and look for signs of heart disease, stroke and other illnesses. Then encourage others through your social channels to do the same using the hashtags, #GoRedWearRed and #WellWomenVisit. We couldn t make positive changes without the support and donations by individuals like you.
