1 Grace Lutheran Church October 14, :45 am Worship Twenty-first SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST This week we continue a three-week stewardship emphasis, Loving Generously. Today we examine ways we help those less fortunate. Stewardship is not just a duty and responsibility it is a fortunate delight and privilege. God gives to us out of a heart filled with love and enables us to do the same. All are welcome to receive Holy Communion as we celebrate the presence of Jesus among us. As you prepare for worship, please fill out worship information sheets in the red folders in each pew. Parents or children are welcome to use our Wiggle Room behind the sanctuary. GATHERING MUSIC We Gather to Praise *CALL TO WORSHIP Lord, thank you for the gifts you give us. Help us realize all that we have comes from you. The time, talent, and financial resources we have are a sacred trust from you. Nourish in us faith and strength to excel in the grace of giving to the poor. 3 PRAYER OF THE DAY Hear us as we pray together. Lord Jesus, through your life, death and resurrection you have restored us to a right and proper relationship with God, who gives us everything we have. Each day empower us to respond in faith, revealing our love for you in all we do. In your name we pray, Amen. We hear the Words of Light READING Philippians 2:4-11 Listen to a reading from Paul s letter to the Philippians: 4Let each of you look not to your own interests, but to the interests of others. 5 Let the same mind be in you that was in Christ Jesus, 6 who, though he was in the form of God, did not regard equality with God as something to be exploited, 7 but emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, being born in human likeness. And being found in human form, 8 he humbled himself and became obedient to the point of death even death on a cross. 9 Therefore God also highly exalted him and gave him the name that is above every name, 10 so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bend, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. Glory to you, O Lord. 17As he was setting out on a journey, a man ran up and knelt before him, and asked him, Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life? 18 Jesus said to him, Why do you call me good? No one is good but God alone. 19 You know the commandments: You shall not murder; You shall not commit adultery; You shall not steal; You shall not bear false witness; You shall not defraud; Honor your father and mother. 20 He said to him, Teacher, I have kept all these since my youth. 21 Jesus, looking at him, loved him and said, You lack one thing; go, sell what you own, and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow me. 22 When he heard this, he was shocked and went away grieving, for he had many possessions. 23 Then Jesus looked around and said to his disciples, How hard it will be for those who have wealth to enter the kingdom of God! 24 And the disciples were perplexed at these words. But Jesus said to them again, Children, how hard it is to enter the kingdom of God! 25 It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God. 26 They were greatly astounded and said to one another, Then who can be saved? 27 Jesus looked at them and said, For mortals it is impossible, but not for God; for God all things are possible. 28 Peter began to say to him, Look, we have left everything and followed you. 29 Jesus said, Truly I tell you, there is no one who has left house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or fields, for my sake and for the sake of the good news, 30 who will not receive a hundredfold now in this age houses, brothers and sisters, mothers and children, and fields with persecutions and in the age to come eternal life. 31 But many who are first will be last, and the last will be first.
