He would do more for them than they could imagine. Israel, a nation in exile at the time of this prophecy, would become the nation that the whole world would look to with respect. For from Israel would come the Savior. Every kind of bird, all the nations, would live under the tree of Israel. The people who heard Jesus tell the parable of the farmer's life also shared the wonder of the soil. The farmer works hard during the day, but he can't make the seed grow into a plant, and the plant produce fruit. God causes the growth. Jesus' point is that like the plants the Kingdom of God is in God's hands. The workers in the Lord's fields must do their best to create the proper environment for growth, but God causes the growth. The parable comforted the people of the early Church in face of discouragement when their efforts didn't seem to be getting them anywhere. Remember, early Christianity grew as a development of the Jewish faith, but the Christians were rejected by the Jews. It must have been difficult for them to explain to the pagan gentiles how Jesus was predicted by the Jewish prophets when the Jews had rejected Him, and them. Persecuted on every side, the early Christians had to trust God to give growth to his kingdom. And He did. And He still does. The Church lives on despite the persecution from the Romans, despite the internal dogmatic fights and debates of the second through fifth centuries, despite the Fall of Rome and conquest of the barbarians, despite the corruption from within and outside in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, despite the Christian fratricide of the Reformation, despite the onslaught of rationalists in the last two centuries, despite the clergy sex abuse scandal, despite the attacks on Christians by ISIS, and despite two thousand years of martyrdom aimed at destroying the faith, the Church still lives on, and grows. God gives the growth. He does wonders with our feeble efforts. He turns that which is insignificant into that which is substantial. The Church continues to grow; for the Lord, not people. When we are confronted with those who compare the numbers of priests, and priest -less parishes, and the numbers of Catholics to figures of sixty years ago, we need to remember that the Church will exist until the Second Coming of the Lord. The Church will adjust and flourish in the future just as it has in the past. And it will grow, for God gives it growth. And when we are confronted with immorality on all sides, when we are convinced that the world will soon be coming to an end because so many people are behaving so poorly, and when we are often tempted to join the immorality, we should not despair, the Church not only lives on through the muddle and the mire of the world, it actually grows. You and I also grow as long as we do everything we can to stay united to the Church. For in the face of turmoil, outside us and within us, God gives his Church growth. Paul wrote in today's second reading: we walk by faith, not by sight. May we always be strong members of the Church so God might work the miracle of His growth through us.

A él le gustaba contar parábolas como una forma para comparar esto de aquello. En muchas de las parábolas, Jesús revela quien es Dios al comparar la naturaleza o acciones de Dios con alguna situación conocida de su audiencia. En la parábola de la semilla de mostaza, Jesús proclama una verdad maravillosa e irrefutable. Su pequeño grupo de discípulos, tan insignificantes como ellos se hubieran sentido, un día producirán un reinado poderoso cuyo crecimiento lo comenzó Dios. Las semillas de este reino fueron plantadas por Dios y es Dios quien cosechará el fruto producido por esas semillas. No se puede predecir que tanto crecerá el Reino de Dios. Debemos confiar el trabajo de las manos del dueño, así como nosotros, al igual que la semilla de mostaza, crece y crece..tradiciones DE NUESTRA FE Muchas parejas se casan durante este mes. Las bodas son ritos religiosos y culturales que celebran el inicio de un matrimonio. En 1215 el matrimonio se convirtió en sacramento cristiano. Este sacramento tiene un rito simple por el cual la pareja se casa proclamando en público su mutuo consentimiento. En Latinoamérica varios ritos culturales han sido incorporados al rito cristiano para embellecerlo con simbolismo y folclor. Uno de estos ritos es el de las arras y es mencionado por Jesús en la parábola de la mujer que encuentra su moneda perdida. Según tradiciones judías y árabes la familia del novio entregaba una cantidad de dinero al padre de la novia. Algunas de estas monedas eran dadas a la novia como recuerdo del día de su boda. Esta costumbre llega a España durante la invasión de los Moros. Pero luego los españoles la trajeron a América. Arras significan garantía y son las primicias del sostenimiento económico que el novio dará a la nueva familia que se establece en el matrimonio de la pareja. Trong dụ ngôn thứ nhất của bài Tin Mừng hôm nay, hạt giống được gieo xuống lòng đất bắt đầu nảy mầm và mọc lên lên thành cây lúa, trổ đòng đòng và thành bông lúa nặng hạt; tự nó mang một sức sống mạnh mẽ, lớn lên đêm ngày theo một tiến trình mầu nhiệm, chẳng cần con người can thiệp, âm thầm lớn lên, chậm nhưng vững, đến khi cho mùa lúa mỹ mãn. Hình ảnh này diển tả Nước Trời là một thực tại vô hình, âm thầm hoạt động trong bản thân con người; Nước ấy phát triển và được củng cố vững mạnh khi con người mở rộng tâm hồn đón nhận Lời Chúa. Người ta không nhìn thấy Nước Trời, nhưng có thể thấy rõ hoa trái của Nước ấy thể hiện qua các hành động yêu thương của người Kitô hữu. Trong dụ ngôn thứ hai, hạt cải bé nhất, nhưng theo thời gian nó mọc lên thành cây lớn hơn mọi thứ cây cỏ khác. Nước Trời khởi đầu bằng Ðức Giêsu và một nhóm nhỏ môn đệ làm nghề chài lưới, ít học. Sau hai mươi thế kỷ, Kitô giáo đã lan tràn khắp nơi, đến với mọi dân tộc vì Tin Mừng phải được rao giảng cho mọi dân tộc. Đức Giêsu đã gieo hạt giống Nước Trời trong lòng thế giới, và theo dòng thời gian, phát triển sung mãn và trọn vẹn thành mùa bội thu vào ngày Cánh chung. Sứ điệp của Chúa Kitô và công cuộc cứu độ của Ngài bị người Do thái từ chối nhưng đã trở thành nguồn ơn cứu độ cho mọi người, ở mọi thời và khắp mọi nơi. Hình ảnh hạt cải cũng nói lên sức mạnh của ân sủng do Chúa ban. Sức mạnh của ơn Chúa khiến hạt giống đức tin mà Ngài gieo vào tâm hồn mỗi Kitô hữu qua bí tích rửa tội, ngày càng lớn lên qua việc cầu nguyện sốt sắng, siêng năng học hỏi, suy niệm và thực thi Lời Chúa, qua việc lãnh nhận các bí tích, đặc biệt là bí tích Thánh Thể và Giải Tội. Với ân sủng Chúa ban, người môn đệ Chúa Kitô có đủ kiên nhẫn và trung tín để tin tưởng cậy trông vào Nước Thiên Chúa không ngừng lớn mạnh như một hạt cải bé nhỏ tăng trưởng thành cây lớn. Thái độ của người môn đệ Chúa Kitô là kiên nhẫn, không hấp tấp tìm thành quả trước mắt. Hạt giống nào cũng phải vùi sâu dưới đất, và phải đương đầu với những khó khăn trong tiến trình nẩy nở và phát triển thành cây. Kitô hữu phải sống niềm cậy trông, tin rằng Chúa sẽ đưa Nước Ngài đến thành tựu, bất chấp những khiếm khuyết và cản trở của con người; không nản chí gieo vãi hạt giống Lời Chúa, mặc dù nhiều khi mắt phàm không nhìn thấy hạt giống lớn lên. Chúa lập Hội Thánh giữa một thế giới đầy hận thù, chia rẽ. Ngài làm cho Hội Thánh không ngừng phát triển trở thành cây to để chim trời làm tổ và trở nên bàn tiệc của mọi dân tộc và mọi quốc gia, là nơi mà mọi người được chung hưởng niềm vui vĩnh cửu. Kitô hữu không chùn bước trước những khó khăn để xây dựng một Hội Thánh tốt đẹp, để khi nhìn thấy Hội Thánh hữu hình ở trần gian, họ nhận ra Nước Trời ở gần bên. Cuộc đời được ví như một thửa ruộng mênh mông mà mỗi người là một loại cây được hưởng nguồn sống từ trời, nơi Thiên Chúa toàn năng. Chỉ những cây nào biết gắn bó với nguồn sống mới có thể sinh hoa kết trái được. Kitô hữu suy gẫm tình trạng tâm hồn mình xem có bám rễ trong đời sống thiêng liêng, có chọn Chúa làm lý tưởng cuộc đời, có ý thức được hạt giống âm thầm là ơn của Chúa ban, là sự hiện diện của Chúa ngay giữa dòng đời và nhờ đó sẽ gặp được Thiên Chúa?

6 JUNE 17, 2018 TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION The reign of God comes about because people commit to reversing their lives completely, to embracing new vision, new values. Many popular television shows exploit an unattractive side of human nature by pitting contestants against one another, even to the point of performing dangerous stunts or devious schemes, to gain money or favor. At the liturgy, we counter that impulse by committing ourselves to live generously. In response to Christ s total gift, we offer bread and wine as the emblems of our lives, our hopes, our joys and sorrows. The bread and wine carried to the altar contain our lives, and by offering our lives to God, we prepare to receive the gift of God s own life. We are to become what we receive: the body of Christ. On Sundays, this self-giving is often accompanied by a collection and procession of gifts for the poor and money for the upkeep of the parish. There are certainly other methods of collecting money, some perhaps more efficient. In spite of an infinite desire for virtue and sanctity, his early life was wasted in the service of the world and its pleasures. Then one day, obliged by his father, Sergius, to be present at a duel fought by him, he beheld him slay his adversary. The crime made such an impression upon him that he determined to expiate it for forty days, as though it were entirely his own. For this purpose he retired to a Benedictine monastery of St. Apollinare, near Ravenna, where he became Abbot. After founding several monasteries, he laid the foundations of the austere Order of Camaldoli in Tuscany. Like all the saints, he fought a lifelong battle against the assaults of devils and men. In the beginning of his spiritual life he was strongly assailed by numerous temptations, which he conquered by vigilance and prayer. More than one attempt was made on his life, but Divine Providence enabled him to escape from the danger.
