3 Jubilee Year of Mercy: this month s theme is Walking the Road of Mercy. Working the Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy are ways of Walking the Road of Mercy. See Paula s column each week which will highlight a different work of mercy with some concrete ideas. Chili Bowl Time again! January 31 st in the parish cafeteria. Bring your chili for judging by 3:00, followed by trivia led by our youth ministry, then eating all that chili! Free. Invite family and friends. All are welcome. Parishioners from St. Anthony have been invited as well. Word has it that you may want a child or youth on your trivia team to help you with the answers. Prizes not only for the top 3 chili recipes but for the trivia teams too. Selection of our Pastoral Region Pastor: The open listing comes out February 8 th ; the Priests Personnel Board will meet in mid-march to begin the selection process. It is my intention to apply! Please keep me in your prayers. Bishop Binzer makes an appeal to you: pray for those involved in the process of selecting a pastor for our pastoral region. Because the Spirit speaks through you too, you can nominate any priest you feel could serve our pastoral region as pastor. Any letters are copied and given to each Priest Personnel Board member. Send to Bp. Binzer at 100 East 8 th St or jbinzer@catholiccincinnati.org. Last weekend the Q & A from the Dec. 9 th Presentation of the Pastoral Region Plan was inserted in the bulletin. Extra copies are available on the table in back of the pews or at the side entrance. At the next Pastoral Council meeting on January 26 th we will determine when and how to offer an opportunity for those who were unable to attend Dec. 9 th to be well-informed about the Pastoral Region Plan. Just to let you know that this year both St. Margaret -St. John and parishes have catechumens, so the Easter Vigil will take place at both parishes. Since has not had any adult initiations in quite a while, I will be there and will be here. Giving Tree Thank your for your generosity in this season of giving! The following is the list of dona ons for Birthright: 38 t-shirts, 2 snowsuits, 29 blankets, 8 toys/ra les, 3 pair of gloves, 10 pair of socks, 3 boo es, 10 hats, 6 bo les, 34 bibs, 3 1/2 boxes of diapers, 3 boxes of baby wipes, 22 quilts and $292 cash/checks. Thanksgiving appeal and Giving Tree totals were $2, for Vincent de Paul. Thanks to all for their generosity! A special thank you to those loyal volunteers who helped decorate our church for Christmas. The church looked beautiful and we are so appreciative of all the time and effort it took to decorate and then put everything back at the end of the Christmas Season. Our sincere thanks to:, Helen Davis, Bob, Mary, Mitch, Jacob & Kathryn Eifert, Paul Wittrock, Lin Weikert, Lois Esswein, Maureen Bates and Mary & Dave Mathers. Tax Time? Please call the parish office if you need a 2015 St. Margaret St. John parish contribution total for your tax forms. We will send them out to you as soon as possible.

4 Paula s Corner The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring glad tidings to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free, and to proclaim a year acceptable to the Lord. This is Jesus mission statement, and as followers of Jesus it is our mission statement too. A question we should all be asking ourselves is: are we actually living the word or are we just mouthing the words? Do we truly believe the Words are spirit and life or do we simply say the words on Sunday and then on Monday, forget to feed the hungry, welcome the stranger? We call ourselves the body of Christ? But are we really? When we hear hateful statements about Muslims, immigrants coming from politicians and we remain silent, are we living the Word? What about when a family member or a member of our church supports those statements and we remain silent, are we acting as part of the body of Christ? What is the difference between us and saints like Francis of Assisi and Mother Theresa? It is not that they are holier or that they prayed more. It is when any part of the body of Christ suffered, they suffered. They didn t just hear the cries of the poor, the cry of the Earth, they felt it in every part of their being. If we are truly the body of Christ, we would experience the suffering of all creation as Jesus did. We would no longer be silent. We could no longer sit still. We would never imagine causing pain and suffering to other parts of the Body so we could have cheaper goods and services or more stuff. Are we ready to be transformed and really become the Body of Christ? YOUTH MINISTRY NEWS When Pope Francis visited the US, he reminded all of us to continue our mission to be disciples of the Lord, to serve those in need, to be Christ s flock devoted to and following him. Our Youth Ministry is supporting a new focus for the Lenten season. We are excited to begin a toiletries collection for Women Helping Women. Our project begins this weekend and continues until February 28. The items collected will be assembled by our youth and donated to Women Helping Women for distribution for the Easter season. WOMEN HELPING WOMEN empowers survivors of sexual assault, domestic violence and stalking by providing advocacy, support and options for safety and educates the community to create social change. Founded in 1973, Women Helping Women provides crisis intervention and support services for women and men who are survivors of sexual assault, domestic violence and stalking in Hamilton County, Ohio. The agency also takes a leading role in building awareness in the community to prevent these crimes. Agency services include a 24-hour crisis line, hospital accompaniment, individual crisis intervention, court and law enforcement advocacy, support groups, date rape/dating violence prevention programs, community education and professional training. It provides free confidential services to over 12,000 people in the community each year. (Source: Women Helping Women website) There will be a collection bin at each parish and at Cortona Hall (the site of the Sunday Edge and Epic programs). The items that we are collecting are: Full sized toiletries, Diapers, Infant formula and NEW adult, children and infant clothing. Adults and children typically arrive at Women Helping Women facilities with only the clothes on their backs. WHW tries to relocate their clients to safe housing, and they can take the full sized toiletries with them to assist in their effort to get re-established. Our Youth Ministry thanks you for your prayerful consideration of this Lenten Project. We appreciate your support and prayers.

5 THIS WEEK S READINGS JANUARY 24, 2016 IN our parish St. Margaret-St. John Bob Barlage, Bro. Norbert Bertram, OFM, Nikki Best, Mary Beresford, Tom Blankemeyer, Fr. James Brookes St. Margaret of York, Don Cafferky, Nancy Callahan, Lorraine Carney, Gina Clark, Robert Davis, Tammy Davis, Matthew Dickason, Tammy Doss Kelly Flanigan, John Forsthoefel, Emma Gough, Brad Giesting, Mary Greis, Jim Griffin, Heather Griffin, Barb Hervey, Lucilia Hock, Grover Hord, Marge House, Clare Jones, Larry Kahles, Jane Kaeser, Joe Kaeser, Dee Kaiser, Steve Keeney, Marian Kleiman, Steve & Mary Knepfle, Margie Lemkuhl, Eddie Mahoney, Kevin Mahoney, Debbie Malicoat, Mary (Marasco) LeRoy, Rosemary McQueary, Ruth Miller, Molly Montgomery, Martha Muchmore, Betty Nerl, Margaret Nerl, Dick Nichols, Steve O Connor, Elaine Otto, Esther Quinn, Katie Rahn, Pat Rardin, Lenore Ridge, Paul Rosing, Steve Ruwe, Ted Sentker, John Sheehy, Jacob Salamon, Sarah Knepfle, Louise Spahn, Helen Steele, Tom Suddendorf, Kenzie Suddendorf, Alberta Sullivan, Mary Twigg, Patti Weikert, Teresa K Wilson, Carol Winterich, Bob Witherby, Jani Wood, Frances Yunker We try to update our Prayer List. If we took someone off that s ll needs our prayers, Please call the parish office. First Reading Ezra read from the book of the law of God to the assembled people. They understood and accepted the law (Nehemiah 8:2-4a, 5-6, 8-10). Psalm Your words, Lord, are Spirit and life (Psalm 19). Second Reading As the body with its many parts is still one body, so it is with Christ (1 Corinthians 12:12-30 [12-14, 27]). Gospel While attending worship in the Nazarean synagogue, Jesus reads from the prophet Isaiah and declares himself to be the fulfillment of the prophecy (Luke 1:1-4; 4:14-21). NEXT WEEK S READINGS JANUARY 31, 2016 First Reading God appoints Jeremiah as prophet to the nations (Jeremiah 1:4-5, 17-19). Psalm I will sing of your salvation (Psalm 71). Second Reading Love with its many facets is the most important of the virtues (1 Corinthians 12:31 13:13 [13:4-13]). Gospel When Jesus claims his salvific mission is for all people, not just the Jews, he is expelled by the enraged members of the Nazarean synagogue (Luke 4:21-30). LIVING AS THE BODY OF CHRIST Some of Saint Paul s best known and most beloved imagery is contained in the passages from First Corinthians that we have heard last week and this week: the many gifts granted by the one same Spirit and the many members making up the one Body of Christ. Few passages from sacred scripture more accurately sum up how Christian vocations work together. Unlike some of Paul s other writings, which are a product of the social and religious conventions of his time, these enable us to look at our own lives and the lives of those around us to discern what gifts, what vocations the Holy Spirit has given for the good of all. We can likewise know the joys and sorrows of the other members of the Body and share in them for the strengthening of the whole Body of Christ.

6 Pastoral Region Prayer Good and Gracious God, You call us to be Your faithful disciples. Send forth Your Holy Spirit, as we seek to know Your will for our pastoral region. Guide us as we consider our purpose and mission To further advance Your kingdom. Help us to use our many diverse gifts, as we strive to serve the needs of all, for Your honor and glory. We ask this through the intercession of Saints Anthony, Cecilia, Margaret of Cortona and John Vianney, and our Blessed Mother, through Christ Our Lord. Four Grand Club Our weekly $40 Four Grand winner for 2016 is Mary Jo Karch. Congratulations!! SM-SJ Sounds of the Season CD If you ordered a Sounds of the Season CD and it is missing the last song, you can come to the parish office and we will replace it with the corrected one. Thanks to all who supported this endeavor. All proceeds will go to the SM-SJ Music Ministry. Please pray for the repose of the souls of Sara Knepfle and Ralph Meineke. Sara s Mass of Christian Burial will be Saturday, January 30 at St. Margaret St. John. Ralph Meineke s Mass of Christian Burial was Saturday, January 23. Don t forget next Sunday is our annual Chili Cook Off. Pots of chili need to be brought to the cafeteria between 3:00 and 3:30 when they will be judged by an impartial panel. After some fun trivia games have been played, the chili will be shared by all. There is no charge for the Chili Bowl, but a free will offering to benefit St. Vincent DePaul will be accepted. See you there! Did you know that your generous donations to VDP help to keep heat and water turned on for those in need? What a basic need but even more so in this cold weather. It is a blessing that our parish s generosity is able to help those in our community. This year our Lenten Fish Fry dates will be February 12 and March 18. We will need volunteers to help so please call the parish office if you can help in any way. We depend on these events to meet our parish expenses so please consider volunteering and supporting these events.
