1 Church of Saint Rita 281 Bradley Avenue - Staten Island, NY SUNDAY, MAY 25, 2014 Dear Parishioners, As you know, every parish in the Archdiocese of New York has been working through a process called Making All Things New. As part of this process parish surveys were taken, parishes were grouped into Clusters (our cluster consisting of ourselves along with Blessed Sacrament, Holy Family, Our Lady of Pity, Sacred Heart, St. Anthony of Padua, and St. Teresa), parishes sent representatives to cluster meetings (our representatives were Bill Gault, Dorothy Leanza, Sunny Thomas and Rudy Vargas), and at the cluster meetings various aspects of our parishes were painstakingly considered and recommendations were proposed to improve our services and become more vibrant Christian communities. In February, the 75 Clusters submitted the recommendations that came out of their meetings to an Advisory Board of forty lay people, clergy and religious representing every vicariate of the Archdiocese. At that March meeting, the Advisory group approved the major recommendations that our particular Cluster made and added some further recommendations. Last week, the members of our Cluster met and accepted these recommendations. The next step in the process will be a further meeting of the Advisory Board to go over the responses from the Clusters, and then recommendations will be proposed to Cardinal Dolan, who plans to announce the final decisions in September 2014 with implementation to begin in January The complete preliminary recommendations for our cluster are published in this week s bulletin. You will see that the biggest change proposed for our Cluster involves St. Anthony of Padua in Travis. St. Anthony s is a very small parish community, and considering the shortage of priests it is hard to justify the assignment of a full time pastor there as we go forward. Our Cluster has thus recommended that St. Anthony s become a part of Our Lady of Pity Parish, with St. Anthony church remaining open for weekend Masses as well as weddings and funerals. For ourselves, we have received recommendations to build stronger bonds with our neighboring parishes and more collaboration to make our ministries stronger. As you know, St. Rita and Holy Family have already been engaging in much cooperation and, at times, we were put forth as an example of what future collaboration could look like. These recommendations are not final, but they are the fruit of much prayer and much long discussion. I invite you to read the recommendations carefully. Fr. Richard Veras, Pastor Come join the fun at VACATION BIBLE CAMP Monday, July 7th to Friday, July 11th from 9:30am to 12:30pm St. Rita School Gymnasium Boys and Girls Ages 4 to10 Cost $30.00 one child or $50.00 two children includes T-shirt, crafts and snacks For additional information or a reservation form, call Mrs. Mary Gillespie at

3 MAKING ALL THINGS NEW Preliminary Recommendations - Models After reflecting on Cardinal Dolan s goals for Making All Things New, your Cluster Evaluation, your Parish Evaluations, your Data Verification Forms and Parish Summary Forms, we support your suggestions. Therefore, our preliminary recommendation is that you adopt: Model Three Consolidated Parishes: The 2 faith communities of St Anthony's of Padua and Our Lady of Pity will be consolidated at the current site of Our Lady of Pity (depending upon a structural and a long term maintenance appraisal). An additional worship site (e.g. weekend Masses as well as occasional weddings and funerals) will be at St. Anthony of Padua. The additional worship site will be evaluated every two years based on use, financial viability and building condition. Model One Collaborative Parishes: Collaboration among the new parish community with Church of the Blessed Sacrament, Church of Holy Family, Church of Sacred Heart, Church of St Rita, and Church of St Teresa. Further Recommendations Ministries & Related We further recommend that as a cluster you: Develop strategies for serving people living in poverty and advocating on their behalf. Adjust the number of Masses in light of the size of the congregation and the seating capacity of churches. Consult with neighboring and cluster parishes to coordinate Mass schedules. Evaluate and develop strategies for enhancing lifelong faith formation for adults. Likewise, include the Office of Adult Faith Formation under Daniel Frascella as a key resource in developing your adult education programs. When the work of the Religious Education Planning Committee, appointed by Cardinal Dolan, is completed, implement the recommendations in every parish of the Archdiocese. Plan and implement a common cluster-wide evangelization program. Include consideration of inviting parish volunteers and potential volunteers to experience a Cursillo weekend as a means of enlivening the spirit of evangelization in your parishes. Include the formal process of the Rites of Christian Initiation/Adults for evangelizing those seeking to become Catholic. Continue to promote and support Catholic School education in the archdiocese. Create or enrich collaborative youth and young adult ministry. Take advantage of the Archdiocese's Office of Youth Ministry, headed by Fr Joe Espaillat, as you plan your youth ministry programs and training for youth ministers. Develop a plan for formation and education in vocation awareness. Consider inviting suitable candidates for the diaconate. Work on stewardship of time, talent and treasure in order to help ensure financially sustainable parishes. Identify methods for community involvement and outreach in ecumenical and interfaith relations. Identify strategies for effective outreach to and with diverse cultures. Pursue collaboration among your parishes especially in the areas of: Youth Ministry; Adult Education; Volunteer Development Rationale We make these recommendations based concepts found in your own study and evaluation as well as our perspective from examining the needs of the Archdiocese as a whole. The consolidation of St. Anthony s and Our Lady of Pity based on the projected number of priests. (MATN Goal 5) Everyone agrees that much more has to be done to minister to the needs of teens and young adults. Currently only one out of the 7 parishes in the cluster has a vibrant youth program. (MATN Goal 9) Your reports indicated that there are significant gaps in our adult s knowledge of the faith. The Office of Adult Faith Formation offers lectures, conferences and courses to train ministers in adult faith formation. (MATN Goal 6) You noted a hope for an increase in passion for volunteerism. The Cursillo Movement is one excellent means of accomplishing this. There are Cursillo groups on Staten Island for both Spanish and English-speaking communities. (Criteria 16) (MATN Goal) Our priests need help; you recognize this as an over-riding need. One way to help the pastors and the parish is for an increase in vocations to the diaconate. (MATN Goal 8)
