1 q Highland Presbyterian Church Phone Cloverdale Avenue Fax Winston Salem, NC Volume 52, Issue 12 June 24, 2018 Once Upon a Parable Sunday, June 24, 10:00 a.m. Join the cast of our summer musical as they present Once Upon a Parable, a reflection on the teachings of Jesus. In addition to cameo appearances by numerous Biblical characters, the stories of the Wise Man and the Foolish Man, the Mustard Seed, the Prodigal Son, and the Workers and the Vineyard are heard in full. This 35-minute musical by Allen Pote will be presented in worship on Sunday, June 24 at 10:00. The summer musical is led by experienced and creative individuals from Highland and the broader community. Come celebrate our campers who have spent six days together crafting a show that both teaches and entertains! Documentary Focuses on Vulnerability The Gifts of Community, June 24, 4:00 p.m. Our summer documentary series is focusing on the gifts of community and how each one of us has the power to make a difference in the world around us and in the lives of our sisters and brothers. Our monthly gathering to watch and discuss a TED Talk will be this Sunday, June 24, at 4:00 p.m. in the Ardmore Room. We will focus on the topic of vulnerability and watch the TED Talk on that subject by Brené Brown. Our panel will include CareNet Counselor Will Eads and pastors Randy Harris and Debbie Layman. We hope you will bring open and loving hearts (and a friend!) for our conversation as we seek to build up this part of the body of Christ.

This will be our 33rd round; in the last round we had 132 people participating! In case you have not been participating, Dinner for Eight is a fellowship opportunity for all members (and often some non-members). We currently are composed of 17 groups of 7 or 8 people, who meet, usually for dinner, four times during each six-month period. Sometimes we go to each other s homes, sometimes restaurants, or occasionally even Fling. Dinner for Eight is all about fellowship, not fancy dining, and is a great way for you to get to know your fellow Highlanders, whether you are new to Highland or are a longtime member. If you would like to join, or if you need to drop out, please contact either Carol Varnado at ; cvarnado849@gmail.com; or Jan Penick at ; janpenick@gmail.com by the end of June. As always, if you are currently participating and we do NOT hear from you we will include you in a new group. Note: It is very important to let us know before we reshuffle the names if you are dropping out, in order to keep the groups with enough people to operate well. Thanks! ~Fellowship and Communications Committee Page 5
6 Thank you for All the Diapers and Wipes Our Diaper Drive (which we hold annually from Mother s Day to Father s Day) was a great success! We exceeded our goal with 4,244 diapers (LOTS of size 5 ones) and 7,210 baby wipes. Many children (and therefore parents!) in the Triad will be drier and happier! Thank you for supporting mother's and father's in need in our community! Helping Hands Save the Date, August 25 We hope you will plan to join us for our ninth annual morning of service. We ll gather at the church at 8:30 a.m. for our commissioning to serve in the community. All ages and skill levels are invited to participate as we share with community partners such as Sunnyside Ministries, Riverwood and Hospice. Watch for sign-ups! Summer Overnights at Samaritan Inn We need YOU to sign up and support our homeless brothers at Samaritan Inn. This spring and summer Highland has committed to one night a month at Samaritan Inn. The new facility at Samaritan is beautiful and reflects much community support and intentionality in caring for the men who are guests there. The shifts run from 6:15 p.m. till 7:00 a.m. Upcoming dates are: Saturday, July 14 and Friday, August 24. We need to have six Highlanders sign up each night. Sign up in the Gallery Hall, or contact Steve Zorn, srzorn@hotmail.com, or Debbie Layman, dlayman@highlandpres.org, , or if you have questions. We hope you will support this meaningful outreach. What We re Reading This Summer Highland members have asked what program staff members might be reading this summer. Here are a few of the books on our lists. 7 Acoustic Café Returns Sunday, July 29 Music, Dessert, and Fellowship, 4:00 6:00 p.m. We are so excited that this fun-filled event is returning! Acoustic Café will feature live music by members and friends of Highland. This year s gathering will include performances by Highland members John Calhoun, Henry Heidtmann, Fred Conrad, and Laura Clay, along with the musicians and groups with whom they regularly perform. We ll also provide a variety of desserts from Camino Bakery and have some delicious coffee! We hope you ll join us for this afternoon of live music, tasty treats and great fellowship. Bring a friend! Faithful Past Blessed Future Investing in Highland and Our Mission Several months ago, we kicked off the Faithful Past, Blessed Future Capital Campaign with a stated goal of raising $650,000 to retire debt left over from the Activity Building renovation and the purchase of adjoining land to the parking lot, initiate a complete transformation of the playground into a spiritual Atrium, install new signage, make organ repairs and address other issues around our physical plant. While our goal was to raise $650,000, our desire was to actually hit the $1,000,000 mark in gifts so that we could create a fund beyond the Permanent Fund that could be available for expansion of Highland s mission in ways that cannot be predicted at this time. Access to a fund such as this gives Highland the flexibility to respond to both opportunities and challenges while avoiding the need for another capital campaign. I m pleased to report that Highland has responded with widespread support throughout the congregation and the total dollars pledged stands at $1,083,357. This is a major accomplishment in the life of Highland, and we are truly blessed by the ongoing commitment demonstrated so tangibly by the congregation. Our committee would like to thank the close to 50 volunteers who helped with the specifics of the campaign. On a personal note, I would like to thank the members of the committee, Jim Gallaher, Anita Bain, Bobby and Barbara Yurkutat, Don Thorup and Esther Preston for the many hours they spent organizing and delivering the message. Likewise, to Randy for his constant presence and advice, but most of all to our wonderful Highland family who once again have responded so enthusiastically. ~John Loftis, Campaign Chair Page 7
8 ADULT CHURCH SCHOOL Sundays 9:00 9:45 Through September 2 The Present Word: Justice in the New Testament Room 124 We become upset when we see people who do wrong become popular and powerful. This summer we will learn how God sets things right through Jesus life and teaching. When Jesus comes to live among us and show God s love, we see more of God. In Jesus, we see how God has begun to set things right and promises to the job when Christ comes again. Join us each Sunday this summer for this study of God s Justice. Led by various teachers Church School ON THE GO! While you are away this summer, take church school with you. Enjoy learning more about the Bible while traveling this summer using the 13 videos series of What s in the Bible. Taking you from Genesis to Revelation, these videos make learning fun and informative for all ages. We invite families to take a video and use it in the car while traveling. When you finish one bring it back to check out another one. You can find the videos in the Gallery Hall next to Darryl Ray s office. In-Depth Bible Study Coming This Fall Disciple Fast Track: Bible Study for Busy Lives is a lifetransforming 24-week study in which participants will read, reflect, listen, discuss, and pray as we grow as disciples. We ll spend 12 weeks on the Old Testament this fall, and then 12 weeks on the New Testament this winter and spring. By the end of the study, participants will not only have read major sections of both Old and New Testaments, but will also have reflected deeply on scripture s witness to God s work in our lives, in the church, and in the world. Those who would like to learn more are invited to an information meeting on Sunday morning, August 19 at 9:00 a.m. in the Lectionary Café (Room 123). Additional information about this study is also available on the bulletin board in the Gallery Hall across from Darryl Ray s office. If you want to take part, or want to know more, please contact Randy Harris (rharris@highlandpres.org). Reserve your spot now. Page 8
