September 16 Church School Begins A new and exciting year of growing in faith, knowledge and community at Highland will begin Sunday, September 16. The Christian Education Committee encourages members and guests of all ages to find the learning experience that suits their life situation and faith stage. For adults there will be four classes to chose from: Agape Class with various topics throughout the year; Lectionary Café reviewing the scripture passages for the days worship; Speaking of Scripture studying a book of the Bible, and our traditional Bible study, the Present Word Class. In addition we will have faith.net for elementary aged children, as well as a class for preschoolers and a nursery for toddlers and twos. Youth classes will meet in the Activity Building for middle and senior high youth. For more information on classes, join us September 9, 9:30 a.m. for the All-Church Breakfast in the Fellowship Hall. 3 Engaging Race Matters at Highland Guest Speakers, Classes, Book Groups, and More for Highland s mission and vision statement reminds us as a congregation that we are called to reflect on what it means to live as God s people as we engage pressing issues of our day. For this church school year, we will have varied opportunities to reflect on the pressing issues of race. Rooted in Paul s message of reconciliation in 2 Corinthians 5:16 21, the Confession of 1967 from our Book of Confessions reminds us that God is overcoming the barriers between us and breaking down every form of discrimination based on racial or ethnic difference, real or imaginary. This confession calls the church to labor for the abolition of all racial discrimination and to minister to those injured by it. Highland has engaged in this work for years, including last year s small groups that read Debby Irving s work on white privilege, Waking Up White. We hope to deepen and broaden our engagement with these challenges this year. Beginning with our September events with Debby Irving, we are planning a yearlong series of classes, book groups, experiential events, intergenerational gatherings, and even a field trip or two as we continue to explore this deep wound of racism, and how we might continue to share in God s healing, reconciling work. Look for additional details in upcoming issues of Highlights for when these studies and events will take place. Our first Sunday School class, Holding Up Your Corner, will explore some of the issues. Other groups and studies will begin soon thereafter. Annual Offering for El Buen Pastor Sunday, September 16 One Sunday a year we set aside a special time to celebrate and to give thanks for our family in Christ at El Buen Pastor. At Highland, we partner in ministry with El Buen Pastor throughout the year. Members of our congregation have supported the boy scout troop, served on the Steering Committee and worked as tutors in their after school program. Economic times are hard, especially in this community, and this church family will be dependent upon our financial and prayer support for a long time. They do so much with so little. As we do annually, a special offering will be taken on Sunday, September 16, to support the ministry of El Buen Pastor. Thank you for your generous support of this outreach in our community. Page 3

5 Men s Breakfast Resumes September 12 Following in our tradition of meeting the 2nd Wednesday of each month, we will kick-off our Men's Breakfast on September 12! We will start at 7:00 a.m. and wrap up by 8:00 a.m. We will enjoy fellowship, traditional breakfast food and our highly successful lesson program from "The Wired Word" presented by Nash Lindsay. Wednesday Night Study after Fling Disciple Fast Track 7:00 8:15 p.m., Ardmore Room Starting September 12 Disciple Fast Track: Bible Study for Busy Lives is a life-transforming 24-week study in which participants will read, reflect, listen, discuss, and pray as we grow as disciples. We ll spend 12 weeks on the Old Testament this fall, and then 12 weeks on the New Testament this winter and spring. By the end of the study, participants will not only have read major sections of both Old and New Testaments, but will also have reflected extensively on scripture s witness to God s work in our lives, in the church, and in the world. Additional information about this study is also available on the bulletin board in the Gallery Hall across from Darryl Ray s office. 6 Montreat All-Church Retreat: We Are A Faith Family, October 5 7 As a church family we look forward to a weekend to play and rest together as we retreat to Montreat. As we enter into the 70th anniversary year of Highland, we will gather to share stories and memories of the years and those that have shaped us into the family of faith we are today and will guide us into the future. Courtney Stevens will lead us in an intergenerational weekend of study, reflection, and storytelling to honor our past and share hopes for the future. Registration forms are available at Highland and our website. We hope you will join your friends and Highland family there! Women s Thursday Morning Bible Study Starting September 13 We are starting a new study called Jesus and the Gospels presented by Luke Timothy Johnson, Professor of New Testament and Christian Origins at the Emory University Chandler School of Theology. Our study will look at Jesus as the founding figure of the world s largest religion and how the Gospels portrayals of Jesus have influenced our understanding of the New Testament. The study will include a video segment and time for discussion. The Thursday Morning Bible study is a group of women of all ages and stages in life coming together for study, prayer, laughter and fellowship. There is no homework or advance reading so just come, invite a friend and enjoy a cup of coffee with us. We meet at 10:00 a.m. in the Ardmore Room in the Activity Building. Sanctuary Flower Sign-Ups Our 2018 Sanctuary Flower Dedication Chart can be found in the Gallery Hall. We are hoping to fill each Sunday remaining in the year. Flower arrangements can be sponsored in honor or in memory of your loved ones. Mark a special occasion in your life while providing a beautiful touch to our Sanctuary. You may sign up to dedicate flowers by contacting Gidget in the church office or by filling out a form and leaving it on her desk. 7 Opportunities in Music Ministry at Highland As the search for Highland s next Director of Music progresses, we continue to provide opportunities for participating in music at Highland. Don Armitage is leading rehearsals for our Adult Chancel Choir, and will join with Reid Gilliam, Linda Kent, and Henry Tysinger for Sunday morning music leadership. Leslie Kamtmann and Laura Benoff will work with our Gloria Choir, and Leslie will be joined by Henry Heidtmann in leading our Chime Choir. Other opportunities will be added soon. In anticipation of the program year, please note the following opportunities that are available at Highland at this time. New members are always welcome! Chancel Choir (Adults) Highland s primary worship choir rehearses on Wednesday evenings from 7:15 9:00. Gloria Choir ( 2 5) rehearses on Wednesday afternoons from 5:00 5:30, beginning September 12. Chime Choir ( 4 8) rehearses on Wednesday afternoons from 5:30 6:00, beginning September 12. XYZers Returns September 18 On Tuesday, September 18 the XYZers (those with Xtra Years of Zest) return to our monthly fellowship gatherings. This is a great time to come if you never have before. We will gather for lunch at noon in the Fellowship Hall followed by a program. Please let Gidget ( ) know by Friday, September 14 at 9:30 a.m. if you will be joining us. Please bring $6 for lunch. We can find many themes in the story: believing in another s worth, taking up one another s burdens, being persistent and resourceful in helping a friend move toward healing and wholeness, and the healing love of Jesus. These are lessons we can learn for our daily life together. The Agape Class is studying the same scripture. Look for ways at home to reflect on this Bible passage with other family members. 9 ADULT CHURCH SCHOOL Sundays 9:30 10:30 Starting September 16 The Present Word: God s World and God s People Room 124 The book of Genesis is a rich narrative, full of memorable characters and events. It points us toward our beginnings as a human race, as well as the origins of our faith in the God who is revealed in Genesis. God cares and loves the creation and supports the good of human creatures by being present with them. Led by various teachers The Lectionary Café Room 123 As the name suggests, we'll be discussing the selected scriptures for each Sunday's service, putting them in context, and relating them to our own lives. We'll do these things with plenty of social time and enough Fair Trade coffee to wake you up on a Sunday morning. Led by Grady Elliott Speaking of Scripture: Luke Room 126 This gospel is the longest, the most detailed and most descriptive. Luke s emphasis on social justice, his portrayal of female heroes, the focus on marginalized, discriminated, and forgotten people, all make this gospel a favorite to many. Salvation and forgiveness in Luke is universal and inclusionary: Matthew's genealogy begins with Abraham to show Jesus was a Jew; Luke's begins with Adam to show Jesus was human. In some respects Luke's themes recall those of Paul, his mentor; in others, his theology closely approximates John. We look forward to studying this together. Led by Art Morrissette Agape Class: Holding Up Your Corner Room 125 Willis Johnson is a Methodist pastor who serves in Ferguson, Missouri, where a young black man named Michael Brown was killed in In the wake of the explosion of protests in his community, Johnson has reflected on what it means for the church to address the deep challenges of racial injustice and division in our communities. Rooted in the story of the four friends who carry their paralyzed friend to Jesus for healing (Mark 2:1 5), Johnson encourages us to hold up our corner as we face these challenges before us. Class members will explore what our corners entail, and ways we can acknowledge, affirm, and act in the face of the racism that grips us and tears us apart. 10 Notes From Our Congregational Nurse Dear Highland Family, September brings exciting new beginnings with a new school year, extracurricular activities, and sporting events. Along with a sense of anticipation and excitement there is often fear and anxiety due to the threat of bullying. Most often we hear of this intimidating behavior occurring in children and teens either at school or through social media but bullying happens in all ages and environments. On the website stopbullying.gov, bullying is defined as unwanted aggressive behavior that involves a real or perceived power imbalance. The behavior is usually repeated over time. These behaviors include teasing, inappropriate sexual comments, purposely excluding individuals, spreading rumors and aggressive physical behavior to name a few. Children who are bullied and those who bully may have serious lasting problems. Those who are bullied can experience depression and anxiety, physical health complaints and decreased academic achievement. Those who exhibit bully behaviors may use alcohol and drugs, have abusive relationships as adults or engage in criminal activity. Sometimes our children let us know what is going on but statistics show more often they do not tell an adult. Some warning signs include frequent headache or stomach ache, feeling sick or faking illness. There may be a change of appetite or difficulty sleeping. The loss of friendships or avoidance of social situations can be a sign. Those who bully may become increasingly aggressive and frequently blame others for their problems. Start this new school year with a conversation about both being bullied and bullying others. Define for children what these behaviors are and how to stand up to bullies by just saying stop or walking away. Encourage children to designate an adult with whom they can talk to at school. Ask questions about what it is like on the bus, in the lunchroom, at sports practice or other group settings and talk about including others who are new to school or who are often alone. Repeat this conversation often and talk with other parents and teachers as well. Volunteer at school and sports activities when possible. The most important piece of advice is to model how to treat others with kindness and respect. Even when you think they are not paying attention, children of all ages notice how adults manage stress and conflict and how they treat friends, colleagues, and family. Youth offerings will be back in full swing kicking off September 16 with the return of Youth Fellowship, Church School, and other fun and exciting youth ministry offerings. Youth and families are invited to join us for a morning gathering to register for the year and learn about the goals we have for our ministry together. Youth Fellowship Begins As we look forward to the new youth year, we are adjusting the schedule to meet the needs of our youth and make our time together more meaningful. With feedback from families and youth, we are going to shift our Youth Fellowship meeting time to 4:00 5:30 p.m. for all youth. Each gathering will include time for worship, games, Bible study, and small groups. Our Youth and Young Adult Ministries Committee is excited to try new offerings and ways to encourage our young people as we serve in ministry together. Calling All Senior High Sunday School Youth!
