1 q Highland Presbyterian Church Phone Cloverdale Avenue Fax Winston Salem, NC Volume 52, Issue 6 March 25, 2018 Holy Week and Easter at Highland On PALM/PASSION SUNDAY, March 25, we recall the triumphal entry of Jesus into Jerusalem and begin to prepare for the events of this most sacred week of the church year. Children are invited to process with palms at the 11:00 service. They will meet on the front steps at 10:55 (or, in case of rain, in the Gathering Place). On MAUNDY THURSDAY, March 29, we will gather for a congregational meal of homemade soup at 6:30 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall. Following the simple meal, we will remember Jesus last gathering with his disciples, and then celebrate the Lord s Supper together. Maundy is derived from the Latin mandatum novum, the New Commandment that Jesus gives to his disciples in the Upper Room: Love one another, as I have loved you. A nursery will be provided at 7:00 p.m. for children age five and under. Please note there will be no Fling dinner on Wednesday, March 28. The GOOD FRIDAY Tenebrae ( shadows ) service takes place on March 30 at 7:30 p.m. in the Sanctuary. This service will follow the Seven Last Words of Christ through scripture and the slow darkening of the worship area. The service concludes with the removal of the Christ candle from the Sanctuary. The EASTER festival worship services on Sunday, April 1, will be at 8:30 a.m. and at 11:00. The Christ candle will be returned to the Sanctuary to signify the resurrection of Jesus Christ as the light of the world. The Chancel Choir and Ardmore Brass Quintet will participate in both worship services. At 9:45 a.m., instead of church school, we will celebrate Easter with a potluck breakfast in the Fellowship Hall.

3 One Great Hour of Sharing Offering Received on Easter, April 1 Jesus ministry was among those who were most vulnerable. He preached good news to the poor and release to the captives. Our One Great Hour of Sharing offering helps us share this same good news to those same vulnerable people in our world today: those who are hungry, who are suffering from disaster, who are dealing with oppression in society. Every gift made to this offering will meet the needs of sisters and brothers around the world. Since 1949, Presbyterians have joined with millions of other Christians through One Great Hour of Sharing to share God s love with people experiencing need. Our gifts support ministries of disaster response, refugee assistance and resettlement, and community development that help people find safe refuge, start new lives and work together to strengthen their families and communities. We will dedicate the OGHS offering on Easter Sunday, April 1. Please use the OGHS offering envelops, available in the pews, or write OGHS on the memo line of the check. Thank you for your generous sharing. Easter Potluck Breakfast Sunday, 9:45 10:30 a.m., Fellowship Hall On Easter Sunday, everyone is invited for a potluck breakfast in the Fellowship Hall during the education hour. You are asked to bring your favorite breakfast dish to share such as sweet rolls, fresh fruit, breakfast casseroles, coffee cakes, quiche, yogurt, donuts, etc. Juice and coffee/tea will be provided. This would be a great day to invite a friend to church! Faith & Film: The Mission Monday, April 9, 7:00 p.m., The Sherwood Restaurant Join us for this monthly gathering for adults as we reflect on the visual parables of movies. Our movie for March is The Mission. If you are interested in taking part, please Randy Harris at rharris@highlandpres.org to receive additional details. 7 ADULT CHURCH SCHOOL Sundays 9:30 10:30 The Present Word: Faith in Action Room 124 Faith is central to Christian faith. Faith in Jesus Christ is the basis of salvation. Faith is how we live life, no matter what life brings. In this study will help us see the many dimensions of Christian faith and how these are expressed in our lives, in the church, and our service to others in the world. Led by various teachers The Lectionary Café Room 123 As the name suggests, we'll be discussing the selected scriptures for each Sunday's service, putting them in context, and relating them to our own lives. We'll do these things with plenty of social time and enough Fair Trade coffee to wake you up on a Sunday morning. Led by Grady Elliott Agape Class: CREED: What Christians Believe and Why Room 125 This seven week class will use Adam Hamilton s book CREED and his accompanying video to study the Apostle s Creed, which is a considered to be the most commonly used faith statement in all of Christianity. We will explore the history of the creed, the meaning contained in each individual phrase, why we believe the creed, and why it matters whether or not we believe it. Led by Roberts Bass Speaking of Scripture: Gospel of Luke Room 126 This gospel is the longest, the most detailed and most descriptive. It was actually the first installment of a two-part document: the first was the Acts of Jesus, and the second the Acts of the Spirit (through the Apostles). The same basic themes pervade both parts, and the one can be used to explain the other. Luke s emphasis on social justice, his portrayal of female heroes, the focus on marginalized, discriminated, and forgotten people, all make this gospel a favorite to many. Salvation and forgiveness in Luke is universal and inclusionary: Matthew's genealogy begins with Abraham to show Jesus was a Jew; Luke's begins with Adam to show Jesus was human. In some respects Luke's themes recall those of Paul, his mentor; in others, his theology closely approximates John. Luke uses "journey" as a vehicle for narration in his gospel, just as he uses it for Paul in Acts. We look forward to studying this together. Led by Art Morrissette Page 7
8 Women s Thursday Morning Bible Study Old Testament, 10:00 11:00 a.m. Join us for our ongoing study of The Old Testament using a video series led by Amy-Jill Levine, professor at Vanderbilt University Divinity School. Even if you know the Old Testament well, you will find this series helpful in learning the larger background of the ancient Near East as revealed by research in archaeology, cross-cultural studies, and comparative religion. The study includes a video segment and time for discussion. There is no homework or advance reading, so come, bring a friend, and enjoy a cup of coffee with us. We meet at 10:00 a.m. in the Ardmore Room in the Activity Building. ArtRageous! Summertime Fun Ahead Feel the Tremor! ArtRageous! Is Ahead Experience the earthquake of creativity at Highland as we plan for the 7th annual ArtRageous! summer program for all ages, all friends, all members. Cynthia Tysinger, with sidekick Henry and loyal followers, are planning something special, with familiar programming like drumming and handcrafts, plus some intriguing new things like a presentation on attracting, housing, and feeding backyard bluebirds. Needed: your suggestions for additional programming, your openness to teaching, your interest in attending, and/or your willing hands to help with odds and ends. Contact: Cynthia Tysinger at cstcrafter@gmail.com. Sanctuary Flowers Our 2018 Sanctuary Flower Dedication Chart can be found in the Gallery Hall. We are hoping to fill each Sunday remaining in the year. Flower arrangements can be sponsored in honor or in memory of your loved ones. Mark a special occasion in your life while providing a beautiful touch to our Sanctuary. You may sign up to dedicate flowers by contacting Gidget in the church office or by filling out a form and leaving it on her desk. Forms can be found in the Gallery Hall beside the Flower Chart or can be printed from Highland s website. Thank you for considering this opportunity to enhance our Sanctuary! Please remember that you are welcome to create your own arrangement in lieu of purchasing one from a florist as well. Page 8
