1 q Highland Presbyterian Church Phone Cloverdale Avenue Fax Winston Salem, NC Volume 53, Issue 8 April 21, 2019 Holy Week and Easter at Highland On MAUNDY THURSDAY, April 18, we will gather for a congregational meal of homemade soup at 6:30 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall. Following the simple meal, we will remember Jesus last gathering with his disciples, and then celebrate the Lord s Supper together. Maundy is derived from the Latin mandatum novum, the New Commandment that Jesus gives to his disciples in the Upper Room: Love one another, as I have loved you. The GOOD FRIDAY Tenebrae ( shadows ) service takes place on April 19 at 7:30 p.m. in the Sanctuary. This service will follow the Seven Last Words of Christ through scripture and the slow darkening of the worship area. The service concludes with the removal of the Christ candle from the Sanctuary. The EASTER festival worship services on Sunday, April 21, will be at 8:30 a.m. and at 11:00. The Christ candle will be returned to the Sanctuary to signify the resurrection of Jesus Christ as the light of the world. The Chancel Choir and Ardmore Brass Quintet will participate in both worship services. At 9:45 a.m., instead of church school, we will celebrate Easter with a potluck breakfast in the Fellowship Hall. Easter Potluck Breakfast Sunday, 9:45 10:30 a.m., Fellowship Hall On Easter Sunday, everyone is invited for a potluck breakfast in the Fellowship Hall during the education hour. You are asked to bring your favorite breakfast dish to share such as fresh fruit, breakfast casseroles, coffee cakes, quiche, yogurt, donuts, etc. Juice and coffee/tea will be provided. This would be a great day to invite a friend to church!

3 Transportation for Easter Worship The Congregational Care Committee does not want anyone to miss our meaningful Easter worship because they no longer drive. If you think you would like a ride to the 11:00 a.m. Easter service, please call the church office ( ). If you d like to volunteer to be a driver for Easter or once a month on another Sunday, we d love to hear from you too! Cleanup Buckets for Recent Floods Our prayers and direct support from Presbyterian Disaster Assistance have surrounded our sisters and brothers in Southern Africa following the devastation from Cyclone Idai and in the Missouri River Basin in our own country as they respond to record-breaking flooding. In addition to prayers, cleanup buckets are greatly needed. The Global Service Committee is asking for our help. We hope you will plan to purchase and bring in items for the cleanup buckets before Wednesday, April 24. You can sign up for items to bring on our Signup Genius page or by calling the church. Thank you in advance for your tangible response during this time of great need. New Member Class If you are interested in joining Highland, we will be holding a New Member Class on Monday, April 29 at 6:00 p.m. Please contact Randy, rharris@highlandpres.org, or Debbie, dlayman@highlandpres.org, if you would like more information or if you plan to join us. The Young Adults are writing their own questions pulling together a fun mix of pop culture, history, random knowledge, and maybe a hymn or two! Sign up as a team or come out, and we ll help Page 3

Numbers 6:24) May Book Study on The Art of Dying Well On Wednesday evenings in the month of May, Debbie Layman will lead a book discussion group focusing on The Art of Dying Well: A Practical Guide to a Good End of Life by Katy Butler. Butler provides practical tools to navigate the phases of late life, including a checklist for those in their 50 s and 60 s to consider. This group will be helpful for those planning for their own death (which should be all of us!) as well as for those who have yet to experience the death of their parents. As Christians we boldly claim that in life and in death we belong to God. Those who are willing to contemplate their living and dying, their vulnerability and mortality, often live more fulfilling lives and die more peace-filled deaths than those who are not. We hope you will join us as together we contemplate our faith and the mysteries of comfort, joy and meaning especially as we age and decline. We will gather May 1, 8, 15 and 22 from 5:45 7:15 p.m. in the Ardmore Room. Contact Debbie, dlayman@highlandpres.org or , for more information or to sign up.

7 ADULT CHURCH SCHOOL Sundays 9:30 10:30 All adult classes are meeting in the Activity Building The Present Word: Our Love for God Activity Building AB5 This spring we will study several calls to ministry and the expectations of those called: Unit I: Call to Discipleship highlights several aspects of what it means to be called by Jesus as a disciple. This calling includes hospitality, counting the cost, reaching the lost, and salvation for all people. Unit II: Call to Ministry explores the diverse ways in which Jesus disciples were challenged to exercise their call to ministry: by witnessing to the gospel message, acting with loving kindness, sharing the Resurrection story, and making new disciples through preaching, teaching, and baptism. Unit III: The Spread of the Gospel begins with Paul s introduction of himself to the Jewish and Gentile Christians living in Rome. Paul affirms that the call to salvation is to Israel and Gentiles. This call to salvation is a call to a life in the Spirit and involves a new life in Christ. Led by various teachers The Lectionary Café Activity Building Salem Room AB2 As the name suggests, we'll be discussing the selected scriptures for each Sunday's service, putting them in context, and relating them to our own lives. We'll do these things with plenty of social time and enough Fair Trade coffee to wake you up on a Sunday morning. Led by Grady Elliott Agape Class: Simon Peter Activity Building Ardmore Room AB1 He was not rich or educated but was familiar with hard work. He was quick-tempered but possessed a passion that would change the world. He left everything to follow his teacher yet struggled with doubt and fear. During Lent the class will take an in-depth dive into the life, faith and character of Simon Peter. An Adam Hamilton on-location video will highlight key sites in Simon Peter s life.
