6 Christmas Joy Offering Received on December 23 The Christmas Joy Offering is one of our four denominational offerings and is split evenly between the Assistance Program of the Presbyterian Board of Pensions and scholarship funds for Presbyterian-related racial ethnic schools and colleges. Help us support these faithful servants and students in their hour of great need and hour of great promise. Look for the Christmas Joy Offering envelope, and please give generously. Please Bring Gifts for Shelter Residents In this season of giving, we reflect on God s greatest gift. One of the ways we respond to God s generosity is to share gifts with others. They may be brought between now and Christmas Eve. 7 Disciple New Testament Bible Study Beginning Wednesday, January 9, 7:00 p.m., Ardmore Room Disciple Fast Track: Bible Study for Busy Lives is a lifetransforming 12-week study in which participants will read, reflect, listen, discuss, and pray as we grow as disciples. We will begin January 9 and finish April 3, By the end of the study, participants will have read major sections of New Testament, but will also have reflected extensively on scripture s witness to God s work in our lives, in the church, and in the world. Additional information about this study is also available on the bulletin board in the Gallery Hall across from Darryl Ray s office. If you want to take part, or want to know more, please contact Randy Harris (rharris@highlandpres.org) or Darryl Ray (dray@highlandpres.org). Reserve your spot now. Dinner for Eight At the end of December it will be time to reshuffle our Dinner for Eight again. This will be our 34 th round of groups. Many people have participated in all of the previous 33 rounds! In case you have not been participating and would like to join, Dinner for Eight is a fellowship opportunity for all members (and often non-members). We currently are composed of 17 groups of approximately 7 8 people each, who meet, usually for dinner, four times during each six-month period. Sometimes we go to each others homes, sometimes restaurants, or occasionally even Fling. Dinner for Eight is all about fellowship, not fancy dining, and is a great way for you to get to know your fellow Highlanders, whether you are new to Highland or are a longtime member. If you would like to join, or if you need to drop out, please contact either Carol Varnado ( ); cvarnado849@gmail.com (please note, this is a new address) or Jan Penick ( ); janpenick@gmail.com ) by the end of December. As always, if you are currently participating and we do NOT hear from you we will automatically include you in a new group. We look forward to seeing you at dinner! ~ Fellowship and Communications Committee Page 7

10 ADULT CHURCH SCHOOL Sundays 9:30 10:30 All adult classes are meeting in the Activity Building THE PRESENT WORD: OUR LOVE FOR GOD Activity Building AB5 Christ poured out divine love into the world and showed us what divine power is really like. God s power is not used to destroy or coerce, it is used to shape how God s power is used for the sake of the world. The good news is that we can never be too bad to be loved by God. We are loved with an infinite love and are given hope for a new future. Led by various teachers THE LECTIONARY CAFÉ Activity Building Salem Room AB2 As the name suggests, we'll be discussing the selected scriptures for each Sunday's service, putting them in context, and relating them to our own lives. We'll do these things with plenty of social time and enough Fair Trade coffee to wake you up on a Sunday morning. Led by Grady Elliott AGAPE CLASS: THE GIFT OF THE NUTCRACKER Activity Building Ardmore Room AB1, December 16 The Nutcracker was first performed in 1892 and quickly becoming a holiday tradition, one that continues for many families to this day. In our study The Gift of The Nutcracker, we look at this Christmas classic in a new way through the lens of faith. The iconic tale will help us understand God s greatest gift of the Christ child and of the kingdom that Christ came to build. This is a video-based study by Matt Rawle, United Methodist pastor. Led by Cathy Seaver PARENT AND FRIENDS OF YOUTH: EIGHTH GRADE Activity Building Scout Room, December 9 As adults we try hard to comprehend the perplexing behavior of the teenagers in our lives during the often awkward transition from child to adult. Using the film Eighth Grade as our guide, we wander through our questions together. Led by Courtney Stevens Page 10
