1 q Highland Presbyterian Church Phone Cloverdale Avenue Fax Winston Salem, NC Volume 53, Issue 4 February 24, 2019 Capital Campaign Update Faithful Past, Blessed Future Several weeks ago Highland s Treasurer, Miles Abernethy, announced that Highland has completely retired the debt associated with the Activity Building renovation project. Listening to his report during our annual congregational meeting, my mind reflected on the journey we have now completed: the initial vision, several years of focus groups and planning, the capital campaign, the construction, the second capital campaign and now, the final payment. And, the continuing generosity of Highland: the time, talent and financial support freely offered by the congregation to support the building and renovation of a facility that will serve both the church and the community for many years. Reaching this point sooner than anticipated was possible because over half of the pledges to the most recent capital campaign had been paid by the end of But we re not finished yet! With the debt behind us, the second phase of projects can begin. Plans are underway for our new exterior signage, and we are now beginning to turn our playground designs into reality for current and future generations. The goal for the second capital campaign was higher than required for the stated projects. Supporting a physical plant the size of ours requires anticipating unexpected expenses. We are now living into that as the solution for finally solving the drainage issues under the Sanctuary will be more extensive and costly than originally planned. The receipts of remaining pledges will allow for the funding of the repairs. Highland continues to be blessed in so many ways. I am grateful to be a member. John Loftis, Campaign Chair Ash Wednesday Service March 6 at 7:00 p.m. in the Sanctuary All are welcome for this service of prayer, confession, and song. The imposition of ashes will be offered for those who desire.

3 Upcoming Regional Conferences on Poverty Opportunities in Greensboro March 2 and Winston-Salem March 23 We have two upcoming opportunities in this region to get together with other concerned Christians and discuss the social ills of poverty, hunger and racism and ways we can faithfully respond. The first will be in Greensboro at Sedgefield Presbyterian Church on Saturday, March 2 and is sponsored by Salem Presbytery. Keynote and worship leaders will be Rev. Jimmie Hawkins, Director of the PC(USA) Office of Public Witness in Washington, DC and Dr. Liz Theoharis, Co-Chair of the Poor People s Campaign. The second gathering will be in Winston-Salem at The Enterprise Center and is sponsored by Bread for the World. The keynote speaker will be UNC Professor Gene Nichol, author of The Faces of Poverty in North Carolina. Both gatherings begin at 9:00 a.m. and will have workshops as well as plenary sessions. If you would like more information or are interested in carpooling with a group from Highland, please contact Debbie, dlayman@highlandpres.org or Grateful: Transformed in Giving Thanks Lenten Small Groups starting week of March 17 During the months of March/April the Christian Education Committee is planning for members and friends of Highland to gather in small groups for a time of study and reflection as we share in this Lenten journey together. Groups will be reflecting on the place of gratitude in the Christian life, drawing from the work of author Diana Butler Bass. We are planning a variety of times for groups to gather. Each group will consist of 8 10 people and will meet three times. We plan to offer morning groups, lunch gatherings, evenings with dessert, post-fling groups, groups for singles, parents of elementary children, young adults and more. Sign ups will begin soon online through our website and on the Christian Education bulletin board in the Gallery Hall. Plan to sign up early to get the group that works best for your schedule. Group sizes are limited. For more information contact Darryl Ray at or dray@highlandpres.org. Page 3

After Jesus resurrection and ascension, Jesus disciples continued the work Jesus began, telling about God. A man asked Peter and John for money. They had no money, instead they restored his ability to walk. As Peter healed the man he told him his healing came in the name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene. When the man could walk, he entered the temple and praised God. Bible Verse Acts 4:20 As for us, we can t stop speaking about what we have seen and heard. Page 7

8 ADULT CHURCH SCHOOL Sundays 9:30 10:30 All adult classes are meeting in the Activity Building The Present Word: Our Love for God Activity Building AB5 Christ poured out divine love into the world and showed us what divine power is really like. God s power is not used to destroy or coerce; it is used for the sake of the world. The good news is that we can never be too bad to be loved by God. We are loved with an infinite love and are given hope for a new future. Led by various teachers The Lectionary Café Activity Building Salem Room AB2 As the name suggests, we'll be discussing the selected scriptures for each Sunday's service, putting them in context, and relating them to our own lives. We'll do these things with plenty of social time and enough Fair Trade coffee to wake you up on a Sunday morning. Led by Grady Elliott Agape Class: Short Stories of Jesus Activity Building Ardmore Room AB1 Jesus was a skilled storyteller and teacher who used parables from everyday life to effectively convey his message and meaning. Life in first-century Palestine was very different from our world today. In this video-based study Short Stories by Jesus presenter Amy-Jill Levine takes us back in time to understand how the original Jewish audience understood them. She reveals the parables connections to first-century economic and agricultural life, social customs and morality, Jewish scriptures and Roman culture. With this revitalized understanding, she interprets these moving stories for the contemporary reader, showing how the parables are not just about Jesus, but are also about us still challenging two thousand years later. Led by Susan Toner and Mark Queen Faith & Film: Glory Road March 11, 7:00 p.m., Sherwood Restaurant Join us for this monthly gathering for adults as we reflect on the visual parables of movies. Our movie for March is Glory Road, the story of the integration of the Texas Western College men s basketball team. Our discussion will bring together March Madness and the continual challenges of overcoming the blight of racism. If you are interested in taking part, please Randy Harris to receive additional details, rharris@highlandpres.org. You can find a copy to borrow of each month s movie in the church office. Page 8
