1 q Highland Presbyterian Church Phone Cloverdale Avenue Fax Winston Salem, NC Volume 53, Issue 2 January 27, 2019 Annual Meeting Scheduled The Session has called the annual meeting of the congregation and the corporation for Sunday, January 27, following the 11:00 worship service. The purpose of the congregational meeting is to act on proposed changes to the terms of call of our pastors; to elect congregational representatives to the congregational Nominating Committee; to take action on the Nominating Committee s recommendation of Kelley Gondring to fill an unexpired term on the Diaconate for the Class of 2020; and to receive reports of the standing committees and the 2018 financial and membership statistical reports as information. Because we are incorporated, we are required by law to have a very brief corporation meeting each year. There is no business scheduled for this meeting this year. The annual reports of committees are available on the website or for pick up in the Gallery Hall or Narthex. Souper Bowl of Caring Sunday, February 3 Offering of Canned Goods and Dollars to Help Hungry Neighbors Souper Bowl of Caring Sunday is a nationwide youth-led effort to raise money and food donations for local organizations to help fight hunger. Started by a Presbyterian youth group over 25 years ago, the Souper Bowl of Caring uses a weekend in which people come together for football and fun to also unify the country for a higher good and help fight hunger. Highland youth will be at the doors of the church following both worship services to collect donations that will benefit Second Harvest Food Bank and Samaritan Ministry. We hope that you will participate in this great national effort by bringing in canned goods and your spare change. Don t forget also to bring in your pasta sauce donations on this first Sunday of the month to benefit Crisis Control.

Jesus taught only one prayer to his disciples, at least, only one that was written down. That prayer is recorded in the Gospels of Matthew (in the Sermon on the Mount) and Luke (in the Sermon on the Plain). There are three main parts of this prayer, which we know as the Lord s Prayer. Jesus instructs us first to praise God and secondly to look forward to the presence of God s kingdom among us. Finally, we are to petition God for the bread we need for today, forgiveness, strength to forgive others, and deliverance from temptation. Join your faith.net friends for the next six weeks as we study the Lord s Prayer in many ways. Page 6
7 ADULT CHURCH SCHOOL Sundays 9:30 10:30 All adult classes are meeting in the Activity Building The Present Word: Our Love for God Activity Building AB5 Christ poured out divine love into the world and showed us what divine power is really like. God s power is not used to destroy or coerce; it is used for the sake of the world. The good news is that we can never be too bad to be loved by God. We are loved with an infinite love and are given hope for a new future. Led by various teachers The Lectionary Café Activity Building Salem Room AB2 As the name suggests, we'll be discussing the selected scriptures for each Sunday's service, putting them in context, and relating them to our own lives. We'll do these things with plenty of social time and enough Fair Trade coffee to wake you up on a Sunday morning. Led by Grady Elliott Agape Class: Unafraid Activity Building Ardmore Room AB1, We know Jesus tells us, Do not be afraid, but with everything going on in the world, how is it possible not to be anxious? Learn how people and communities can flourish as beacons of hope and serenity in an anxious age. For anyone struggling with fear, worry, or anxiety, or who wonders how families and communities can live as peacemakers in troubled times, Unafraid offers an informed and inspiring message full of practical solutions. This video series by Adam Hamilton draws on the latest research, therapeutic insights, biblical principles, and personal experience to untangle the knots of fear and truly embrace Jesus's recurring counsel to his followers: "Do not be afraid." Led by Roberts Bass Highland s Inclement Weather Reminder Winter is here! Please remember that announcements of cancellations of worship or other programs will be made through , WXII (both on TV and and through a link on Highland s website. Page 7

9 Youth e-411 s go out each Wednesday with detailed information for the week. To be added to the list, contact Courtney at Youth Fellowship January 27 We re continuing our conversations this month around prayer as we challenge ourselves to seek change in the world and in our lives. Each week we will try out different prayer and mindfulness practices gaining skills and understanding what prayer can do. February 3 12:00 p.m. 1:00 p.m. It s a super Sunday with the collection of our Souper Bowl of Caring offering and the Super Bowl game. We need all youth to help with the Souper Bowl of Caring offering by holding soup pots after both the 8:30 and 11:00 a.m. worship services. Following worship we will gather in the Fellowship Hall for a soup and grilled cheese lunch, a game or two, and a count of our collection so that we can add our amount to the live nationwide tally. Summer Registration Deadline February 3 It's registration season for a whole lot of big opportunities to be together and immerse ourselves in the Christ-centered community which offers space for transformational growth. Consider these offerings for a great jumping off point to get involved. Sign up by dropping off a deposit to the office and reserve your spot! Senior High Appalachian Service Project June Senior High Montreat Youth Conference July 7 14 Massanetta Middle School Conference July Youth News Senior High Mystery Trip Update We re back, and what an adventure it was! As a mystery trip forces us to focus on living in the moment, we travelled to the Great Smoky Mountains. While we were away we tried zorbing down hills, snow tubing, decorated donuts at a local shop, camped for the night inside a cave, worshipped inside the chapel of Maryville College, and had a day at an indoor waterpark. Through it all we were together experiencing community, challenging ourselves to stretch, and were attentive to God all around us. Thank you for your prayers! Page 9
