In keeping information about the trip a mystery we withhold expectations and the stress that can come with life and instead experience joy in the journey and presence in the moment. This trip will have it all: service, fellowship, worship, and truly unique experiences! We have a full bus ready to head out Friday afternoon, January 18 and return Monday, January 21. Make sure to follow along with our journey on the Highland Facebook page, and ask the youth all about it when we return. Bus snacks are always welcome, as are your prayers for a fun and safe journey to our destination unknown. With Gratitude for Christmas Generosity The spirit of giving richly flowed through Highland during the Advent and Christmas seasons. Thank you for your generosity to those in need in our community and beyond. You shared many socks, soap and other items with sisters and brothers connected with City with Dwellings and the overflow homeless shelters. Highland s giving to our denominational Christmas Joy Offering totaled $2,842; $180 was given towards the blanket offering of Church World Service. The Christmas Eve offering supporting Crisis Control was $4,541. And because of you we raised $4,931 in Alternative Giving, meaning many women around the world will feel empowered, additional families will have access to clean water, and more communities will know the wellness that latrines bring. Thank you for your generosity and the ways all of these gifts are bearing witness to God s light and love to our sisters and brothers in need.

3 XYZers Welcome Holocaust Survivor All Are Welcome for This Special Program On Tuesday, January 15, our XYZers (those with Xtra Years of Zest 65 and older) will welcome Margot Lobree as our special guest. Margot was born in Frankfurt, Germany in 1925 and was one of 10,000 Jewish children on the Kindertransport, an organized rescue effort to move children to England in She will share her powerful story with us. If you make an advanced reservation, all are welcome to join us for this special gathering, even if you have not come to XYZers before. We will gather in the Fellowship Hall at noon for our catered meal (lunch is $6). Our program will begin at 1:00 p.m. in the Ardmore Room. To reserve your spot, please contact Gidget Payne ( or by 9:00 a.m. on Friday, January 11. We hope you will join us, and bring a friend! Stewardship Update To date we have received 199 pledges totaling $824,311 for the 2019 Operating Budget, and 144 Time & Talent forms. The Stewardship Committee extends its gratitude to all of those who have made a commitment thus far! If you intend to make a commitment and have not yet turned in your pledge, you may do so by placing it in the offering plate on Sunday, in the mail, or by contacting Joy Hamilton in the church office at or at jhamilton@highlandpres.org. Annual Meeting Scheduled The Session has called the annual meeting of the congregation and the corporation for Sunday, January 27, following the 11:00 worship service. The purpose of the congregational meeting is to act on proposed changes to the terms of call of our pastors; to elect congregational representatives to the congregational Nominating Committee; to elect a Deacon to fill an unexpired term for the Class of 2020; and to receive reports of the standing committees and the 2018 financial and membership statistical reports as information. Because we are incorporated, we are required by law to have a very brief corporation meeting each year. There is no business scheduled for this meeting this year. The annual reports of committees will be available on the web site or for pick up in the Gallery Hall or Narthex on January 20. Page 3

Please contact Barbara Whitley at with questions. Sign Up for a February Shift at the Shelter Thank you for your great support for the overflow homeless shelter in December and January! We hope to fill up February and March just as easily. Highland is responsible for the shelter every Monday night. All other nights are open for sign-ups too! We will serve as greeters, check-in volunteers, dinner providers, snack bag providers, and overnight volunteers. 7 Notes from Our Congregational Nurse It s January and time for New Year s resolutions. I know I am not the only one with a love-hate relationship with this tradition. On the one hand, it does feel good to get off to a fresh start, set goals for what we would like to accomplish. On the other hand, statistically 80% of these goals won t be met. I like the idea of setting goals, but I believe our mistake is making them too broad and not specific enough. Often, we see lists that include losing weight, getting organized, getting fit, reducing stress, or all the above. These are all worthy objectives but need to be broken down into much smaller parts. One article I found on goal setting uses the acronym SMART (specific, measurable, attainable, relevant and time-bound) to describe the action you want to complete. For instance, you want to run a 5K at the end of a 6-month training period or you want to eliminate caffeine from your diet over a 3-month period. Long term goals require short specific tasks to complete. You will feel more motivated and less discouraged and if you blow it you can more easily start over. This applies to everything we may want to achieve. Instead of saying I want to become more spiritual, set reasonable parameters for prayer, meditation, and reading. And most importantly, give up the guilt. Reaching a worthwhile goal is not without stops, starts and do-overs. Here are some specific ideas for our body, mind and spirit: Listen more and have more face to face conversations. Join a new group at church or try a new study. Invite a friend to church. Introduce yourself to someone you may not know at church, work or class. Occasionally don t carry your phone with you, and don t panic! When you return to the phone, clean it with Lysol wipes (at least once a week). Add green plants to your home or office. Try a new class or activity at the gym. If you don t like it, no worries. Eat citrus at least four times a week. Book your medical and dental appointments for the year, and don t forget to check your cancer screening schedule. Tell yourself often you are a beloved child of God, and you are worthy! Blessings, Susan Doughton Each month our Congregational Nurse shares a health column in Highlights. Jesus taught only one prayer to his disciples at least, only one that was written down. That prayer is recorded in the Gospels of Matthew (in the Sermon on the Mount) and Luke (in the Sermon on the Plain). There are three main parts of this prayer, which we know as the Lord s Prayer. Jesus instructs us first to praise God and secondly to look forward to the presence of God s kingdom among us. Finally, we are to petition God for the bread we need for today, forgiveness, strength to forgive others, and deliverance from temptation. Learn how people and communities can flourish as beacons of hope and serenity in an anxious age. For anyone struggling with fear, worry, or anxiety, or who wonders how families and communities can live as peacemakers in troubled times, Unafraid offers an informed and inspiring message full of practical solutions. This video series by Adam Hamilton draws on the latest research, therapeutic insights, biblical principles, and personal experience to untangle the knots of fear and truly embrace Jesus's recurring counsel to his followers: "Do not be afraid." Youth News Confirmation 2019 Sunday, January 13 Information Meeting Confirmation is a class for any youth 8th grade and above ready for the journey of seeking, questioning, and claiming a faith of their own. This is a time set apart for youth to explore what it means to be a follower of Jesus Christ as we journey together and ask our questions of faith. Meeting weekly, youth are given the opportunity to study the basics of the Christian faith and life, with emphasis on Bible study, prayer, and discussions of the questions of faith.
