3 Katie My parents were married at Holy Trinity in I now attend Little Fishes every Wednesday with my 2 year old son, Ollie. He loves it! Richard & Carole We were married in April Remembering... We placed a post on the Facebook page Fareham Nostalgia asking people to recall their memories of Holy Trinity we were overwhelmed by the responses. Here are just a few Penny We used to hold our Nativity there from Harrison Road School. I was very much in awe of the beautiful stained glass windows and truly believed God was there. I went to Sunday School there too which gave me many happy memories. Tracey I was confirmed there in Got married there in I remember numerous Remembrance Services with my 3 children when either in Rainbows, Brownies, Beavers or Cubs. Linda I was married there in 1971 when they had the lovely grounds at the back of the church. I go to Holy Trinity with my daughter every Christmas Eve for Midnight Mass. Jenny I was christened and confirmed at Holy Trinity (nearly expelled from confirmation class for talking too much!). Confirmed by the wonderful Tom Jones. Married at Holy Trinity by Harry Dimmer who was my form teacher at Fareham County Primary! Jan I was christened there in There used to be plaques on the wall with the names of those who were christened there. Paul I was confirmed there by the Bishop of Portsmouth. He said how nice it was to place his hands on someone s hair that was not full of Brylcreem! Anna I remember going with my Dad every Boxing Day to stoke the boiler called Big Ben one time I had a pretty dress on and got covered in dust! Jacquie I got married in Holy Trinity in The Vicar said after the ceremony to go out of the door on the left to the back of the church for photos. The door was locked instead of being first out of the church, we were last! Jan I belonged to the youth club which met in the hall on Sunday evenings. At one point, we had a young curate and we were impressed by him riding a motorbike with robes flowing out around him. 2

Holy Trinity Clock Holy Trinity clock has been at the heart of Fareham s Civic Act of Remembrance since the town s War Memorial was unveiled in the church grounds by Earl Haig in This must have been a very poignant event especially as Rev d Arnold, the Vicar of Holy Trinity at that time, had lost two of his three sons on the Western Front. The clock striking eleven is such an integral part of Remembrance Sunday that the myth even arose that it was given in memory of the fallen of the Great War though clock specialists all agree that it has been in place since the date engraved on the mechanism. When the clock stopped in 2011, Fareham Borough Council dismayed that there would be no chimes, requested that at least the hands should show 11 o clock. They were then set and tied firmly with string in spite of an ancient law which requires stopped public clocks to show 12 o clock! Fortunately no-one seems to have raised an objection! 5 James and Jo Rowland were married at Holy Trinity in They have a son, Will, who is nearly 16 and a daughter, Susie, who is 13. James was born in Leeds and is the youngest of three children. His dad was a Church of England vicar and his mum a history teacher. James moved to Bedfordshire when he was 10 but followed the family tradition of going to Leeds University to study History and English. James started a career in retail management with a move to South Yorkshire followed by a move bringing him to Hampshire. He was offered a job by IBM in 1995 and has worked for the company ever since. James is head server and a chalice assistant at Holy Trinity. Jo was born in Portsmouth and has lived in or near Fareham all her life. She also started working in retail management but only lasted a few weeks before deciding to work for a building society in Southampton. She met James at the age of 19 through the Southsea Shakespeare Actors and their first home was in Portchester before moving to Fareham. Jo undertook legal executive training at Fareham College Parish People The Rowland family 4 and joined Hampshire Constabulary as a civilian manager working in Havant. Jo really enjoys working for the Police and has worked her way up to chief officer level. The Police sponsored her to complete a master s degree in Criminology and she graduated from Cambridge University last summer. Jo currently works in London and is running the Criminal Justice Efficiency Programme which is turning the criminal justice system digital. Will is head boy at Crofton School and working towards his GCSEs. He hopes to study Modern History, Government and Politics, Economics and Philosophy at A level. Will is actively involved with local politics and helped with the recent election campaign. He also enjoys taking part in historical re-enactments and has several authentic WW1 and WW2 uniforms. He volunteers at the WW1 Remembrance Centre at Fort Widley. Susie is in Year 9 and busy choosing her options for her GCSEs. Alongside the compulsory subjects, she hopes to study German, Drama, History and RE. Susie is excellent at ice skating and currently working towards her bronze passport. Susie enjoys shopping with her friends and baking at home. She would like to be a university professor of theology or English literature when she is older. As a family, the Rowlands enjoy historical based events, often travelling to events around the south where Will becomes a military officer! Weekends are very precious and are spent with friends and family. Donna Irving

6 Thoughts from our Curate A time of Remembering November is going to be a time of Remembering for Holy Trinity and our wider community. A month of remembrance begins on Sunday 1st when, at our 8am and 9:30 services, we celebrate All Saints Day. Later in the evening, we have our All Souls service (6pm) when we gather together to remember loved ones who have died especially those we have said goodbye to over the past year. We come together and give thanks for our loved ones who have gone before us into the mystery of the life that lays beyond this one as we continue to entrust them into God s loving care. I am sure many of you will also be wrapping up warm around a bonfire or a firework display as we remember, remember the 5th November and Guy 5 Fawkes attempt to blow up King James I and his parliament. On Sunday 8th, the community of Fareham will gather around the memorial outside our church before coming inside as we mark Remembrance Sunday together - remembering those who have died in conflict. Amongst all these events there are many of our regular events to remember such as Messy Church, Men s Breakfasts, Lunchtime Concerts, Saturday Night Special, PraiseMakers, Come and Sing, Prayer Breakfasts and our Just Enough course at the Hub (more details of all these in this magazine). So, lots to remember in this rather busy month ahead. But in our busyness of life, let us remember that God loves us. Whatever we remember this month, be it with joy or with sorrow, remember we can never be separated from the love of God in Christ Jesus. Saint Paul writes in his letter to the Romans: I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.
