2 A note from Our Pastor: Today s readings are about the signs of the Kingdom. The first reading from the 35th chapter of Isaiah gives the clue as to what to look for: the blind see, the deaf hear, the lame jump and dance, the mute praise God. These are the things that will accompany the Messiah, and show God s love and goodness to all of creation by making it all new. James then warns us about things that are not part of God s Kingdom - distinctions. The poor man has as much dignity as a rich man. We should not discriminate against them. If we do, we think as humans not as God. And finally we come to our Gospel from Mark, as Jesus takes a deaf man with a speech impediment and heals him. This is one of the signs of the coming Kingdom and the Messiah. But we might wonder why does Jesus choose this man to heal. The Catechism states: By freeing some individuals from the earthly evils of hunger, injustice, illness and death, Jesus performed messianic signs. Nevertheless he did not come to abolish all evils here below, but to free men from the gravest slavery, sin, which thwarts them in their vocation as God's sons and causes all forms of human bondage. (Catechism of the Catholic Church #549) Jesus shows the signs of the Kingdom and of his Sonship for our good. That we might come to know the God who loves us and choose to follow Jesus, and find our true happiness. Lawrence From Bishop Felipe Estévez Our Bishop has called for a time of prayer and fasting for the church around the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross. The priests will join together the Thursday before to pray for the church. He is also asking for two things to be done in our parishes: 1.On Friday, September 14th, which is the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, the Bishop would like a day of prayer and fasting. He has asked us to fast by taking only a small amount of food during the day, as at Lent, and to break the fast with a Mass in the evening. The Mass at St. Patrick Catholic Church will be celebrated at 6 pm that day. 2.On Saturday, September 15th, which is the Feast of Our Lady of Sorrows, the Bishop would like us to gather at noon to say a Rosary, asking for the intercession of our Blessed Mother. Please feel free to join us for any of these liturgies. Please call the parish office at Aid to the Victims of the flooding in India Due to the massive flooding in Kerala, we will be having a special collection for the Diocese of Karjirapally on Sept. 15th and 16th at the Sunday Masses. The money will go to the diocese who will send it out to India. We do this to show our love and support the great number of priests that have come to serve in our diocese from that area of India. Their Bishop, Mar Mathew Arackal, reported on August 23rd that one million people had been displaced from their homes and 373 people had lost their lives as per the latest count he received. Religious Education/ Sacramental Preparation News!!! It s about that time of year again to sign your child(ren) up for religious education & sacramental prep classes.
