2 A Message from Fr. Lawrence It is quite an honor to be assigned to St. Patrick s Catholic Church in Gainesville. I could hardly believe the words Bishop Estévez was saying to me when he asked me to come here. To come to a parish established in 1887 and celebrating 130 years of spreading the Gospel message in this area of the state! That s quite amazing thing. Over the next few weeks, I hope to get to know you and learn all the great things this parish has been and continues to do. I look forward to working with and for you to ensure that the Catholic faith continues to be a strong and vibrant faith in our community for the next 130 years and well beyond. Please feel free to say hello and introduce yourself when you see me (and I promise to try to remember all the names), but most importantly, please pray for me and for all the priests that have done such a wonderful a job serving this community including Fr. Roland Julien, Fr. John Phillips, Fr. Dung Bui and Fr. Mathew Joseph, MCSB. Transitions in anyone s life can be stressful, so your prayers are always appreciated. Finally, I would like to call your attention to the call of our bishop, and all the bishops of the United States, to pray for Religious Freedom during our celebration of Independence Day. Freedom is a very important right, and the bishops have asked for prayers for religious freedom. They have themed this year s Fortnight for Freedom as Freedom for Mission. We need our religious freedom to worship God, and do the works that Jesus has asked. The bishop s website (usccb.org) tells us We are called to follow Christ as missionary disciples by seeking the truth, serving others, and living our faith in all that we do. 4 THIS SUNDAY along with our regular collection is the collection for Special Mission Areas, including Florida and Latin America. Please be generous in your offering and make all checks payable to St. Patrick Church. Thank you. Keep Students Connected to the Church It is hard to imagine that 80% of our college students the same students you worked so hard to nurture in their spiritual development stop practicing the faith at some point during college. But the problem is very real. Together with Bishop Estévez, the Diocese of St. Augustine is continuing work to implement a High School Outreach Program in our parishes and Catholic high schools with the help of Newman Connection. This year we are asking the information be collected on student contact cards provided by Newman Connection at a graduation event. Once this is complete, you can then enter the information on the Newman Connection website or send the completed cards to Cassie Campton, Director of Outreach. World youth day Panama 2019 It is with great pleasure that the Office of Youth and Young Adult Ministry presents our World Youth Day Panama 2019 packages. DON T FORGET to keep up your offering to your home parish. If you aren t here for a couple of Sundays please be sure to include the offerings you missed and add them to your present offering. And you don t need to write out several checks. Just total the amount and write out one check. Think of your offering as your gift to God for all the blessings God showers upon you. God doesn t stop blessing you while you are on vacation. God would expect you to continue giving and thanking even while away. Yes, you would be expected to give an offering wherever you go to Mass while on vacation, but please don t forget to keep up your offering to your HOME PARISH. And, have a safe & blessed vacation!
