1 Volume 9, Issue 6 June 2016 Dear Friends, On a recent visit from our two year old grandson, I was trying to get him to repeat something so Diane could hear him say it. You know, one of those cute things that I had heard him say. He was busy with other things and even though I asked him over and over again to say this word he simply ignored me. Finally, as I was giving up on any hope that he was going to pay a'en(on to my request, Diane said to me, He s single-minded. With that the li'le guy immediately turned to me and yelled out, SINGLE MINDED! Something about Diane s words broke through his single mindedness, at least long enough for him to give us some comic relief. I will admit that his response prompted by Diane s words caused me to pause a bit and ponder. As is the case with many children, he has a tendency to shut out the world when he is interested in something. Whether playing with blocks or cars or watching his favorite show, he is all in. You o8en have to repeat his name mul(ple (mes to get his a'en(on. Our children were the same way, as are our other grandchildren. It has made me wonder if there is something about ge9ng older that causes us to become more distracted by what we may experience around us? Somehow I feel more distracted than I used to. I m distracted by computer screens and the constant access my phone has to me. I feel that some(mes I am even distracted when it comes to my spiritual life. I begin to pray and find random thoughts popping into my head. I start to read the Scripture and something else vies for my a'en(on. Did you know there are actually warnings in Scripture about being double minded? Double mindedness, when it comes to our faith, can have the effect of producing or feeding our doubt. And doubt can be a symptom of simply not taking God at his word or to put it another way, not trus(ng God to do what God promises to do in our lives. James writes, Draw near to God and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners and purify your hearts, you double-minded. Be wretched and mourn and weep. Let your laughter be turned to mourning and your joy to gloom. Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will exalt you. (James 4:8-10) in this ISSUE This says to me that I should never take double-mindedness lightly when it comes to God. When it comes to Jesus, I want to Adult Educaon Page 2 be all in! God s amazing grace deserves my full a'en(on. Calendar Page 12 When it comes to my life in Christ, I want to be able to yell, Celebraons Page 11 SINGLE MINDED, and really mean it. 2 On Sundays at 10:00 AM there are a variety of classes open to anyone who is interested. You are welcome to join at any me and see for yourself what discipleship looks like at TPC. Fellowship Class: Understanding Islam Facilitator: Jeannie Phelps, Locaon: Fellowship Hall B As Islam and the Middle East are constant parts of our news today, this class wants to be'er understand how to engage and love our neighbors. We ll look at the religion, history, and what we can do today to be'er love our neighbors on behalf of Jesus Christ. The Fellowship Class is a group that values conversaon and offers hospitality as they gather to study God's word. Come join this always-welcoming class as they connue to study prayer. SALT Class: The Gospel of Ma6hew Facilitator: Donna Frank, Locaon: Room 101 In February SALT is beginning a study on the Gospel of Ma'hew. Join this class for an open discussion on the good news we encounter when we read about Jesus. This class will use a popular study by Stephen and Jacalyn Eyre to help guide and enrich the conversa(on. The Pracce of Prayer Facilitator: Rachel Clark Locaon: Fellowship Hall A Beginning May 8 this class will begin to explore the gi8 of prayer. What is it? Why has God given us this gi8? How has he made it possible for us to communicate with him anywhere we are? We ll open the Bible to learn more and to learn in ways that will equip us to make prayer a greater part of our lives. HomeBuilders Locaon: Room 100 Homebuilders is a class that is open to all, interacve and conversaonal, focused on fostering fellowship and discipleship in such areas as marriage and family relaonships, parenng, financial stewardship, and other parts of our daily walk with God. Bible Study James James is a shorter book in the New Testament, but it is one that deserves plenty of a'en(on. It challenges some of our Protestant roots in the way James describes faith, but rather than ignore it, we'll pa(ently read through it and make the most sense of it that we can. Anyone can join the study as we seek to go slow and allow for plenty of (me for ques(ons and answers. We meet every Wednesday, except for when there is a Ministry Team mee(ng. Wednesday at 6:00PM in Room 206 2

3 Adult VBS Triangle University: The One and Onlies June 19-23, 6:15-7:45PM During our yearly Vaca(on Bible School, any and all adults are welcome to come out for some fun of their own. The following nights will have teaching and discussion. The environment is very casual and open as we will look at what is so important in our faith. As TPC is trying to recommit to what it means for us to faithfully be the church of Jesus Christ, we'll look at the central beliefs of the faith. What about Chris(anity is unique and fundamental? How is Jesus the one and only? Why are these beliefs important and how do they shape my everyday life? Through this week we'll aim to rediscover the core convic(ons of a Chris(an life. If you have ques(ons, ask Casey Clark. All services will be held in the sanctuary at the regular (mes of 8:45AM and 11:15AM, except when there is a single service. On those Sundays, there will be one service at 10:00AM, with a brief (me of fellowship following the service. Single Service Sundays for the summer are: Sunday, June 19 Sunday, July 3 Sunday, August 14 Sunday, September 4 3

8 Why should I join a small group? Small groups are a great source of spiritual growth for the members of the TPC body and a catalyst for Chris(an love and service in our community. A small group is like a church within a church - it is a smaller, more in(mate gathering of people who encourage one another, hold each other accountable, and share together in their Chris- (an walk. Consider the ways you can be further rooted and grounded in the love of Christ by sharing life together with other Chris(ans. Contact Rachel Clark about joining a small groups at TPC. Women s Fellowship Group! The women s fellowship group meets in the Fellowship Hall from 10:00-11:30AM, and all women of all ages are invited to a'end. Our next mee(ngs are: June 9 & 23 and July 14 & 28 (second & fourth Thursdays of the month). Join us as we study the book of James, and please invite any friends and neighbors who would enjoy this great opportunity to fellowship, study Scripture and pray with sisters in Christ. We always have a delicious snack as well! Contact Rachel Clark for more informa(on. Study Recommendaons Below are some suggested resources for your small group to study.
