2 Dear Parishioners, In the Gospel reading of today, Jesus gives us this beautiful image of the vine and the branches. Jesus expresses the unity and closeness that exist between him and his followers. The vine and the branches cannot exist without each other, and they cannot produce grapes separated from each other. The branches have to be pruned to produce fruit. Jesus gave this imagery at the Last Supper before being betrayed and crucified. He gave this imagery at a time when everything seemed to be falling apart or ending. It was the most appropriate time to speak about it because this was when unity was most needed. Jesus foresaw that Judas would betray him and that Peter would deny him. Jesus wanted to teach them that he loved them even in their weakness. It is when we face adversity, failure and danger that unity grows. There is more depth to a relationship that has weathered many storms. Yours Sincerely, Fr. Jose Shaji, Pastor BRINGING HOLY COMMUNION TO HOMEBOUND PARISHIONERS: If you know of a parishioner who is unable to attend Mass but would like to receive Holy Communion, please contact the Rectory so that arrangements can be made for a Eucharistic Minister to bring the parishioner Holy Communion. 3 May is Stroke Awareness Month! Signs and symptoms of a stroke are easily remembered by FAST. If you suspect that someone is having a stroke you need to act fast to get them help. Call 911 so they can get fast treatment and ensure the best recovery. Fast stands for Face, Arms, Speech and Time. Face Is the person's face lopsided looking? Is their smile even? Arms Is there weakness in one arm? Can the person raise both arms? Speech- Is the person's speech slurred, or do they have trouble understanding your speech? Time Is of the essence, Call 911 FAST. Some other signs and symptoms of stroke are trouble seeing, dizziness, loss of balance and co-ordination and a sudden and severe headache. God Bless, Rose Movie & Potluck Dinner St. Anselm Church s Faith Formation cordially invites you to attend the screening of the 2016 film Risen. This film follows one man s journey of faith as he investigates what happened to Jesus after his crucifixion. You do not need to be a parishioner to attend. Feel free to invite your neighbors and friends. Since it is being screened during dinner time, feel free to bring a dish, dessert, or drink to share. The parish will order a couple pizzas, a salad, and one or two desserts. What a great way to spend a Monday night. Event: Movie & Potluck Date: Monday, May 7 th 2018 Location: Parish Hall Time: 6pm-8pm AAA Archdiocese Annual Appeal 2018 $86,050 $48,442 St. Anselm Parishioners Make the Front Page The Wednesday, April 18th, IJ highlighted the walk/press conference in support of the new Housing Focused Shelter program. It included two pictures: one showed clergy of the County, including Deacons Ed Cunningham and Bernie O Halloran (Deacon Bob Meave was there but not in the picture), another showed Liz Amini and her two grandchildren. St. Anselm parishioners Pam and Dan Engel, Gene Mc Ginnis, and Bess Nuzzo also played a prominent part as crossing guards safely guiding the walkers. Kevin Lozaw took the above picture; Dorothy Weaver took pictures which will be used in the future and parishioners joined over 300 people who participated in the walk. The press conference announced the agreement of St. Vincent de Paul Society and Homeward Bound to work collaboratively to provide a true Housing Focused Shelter. This will allow our REST guests to move into housing and not just spend a winter s night on a floor. Thank you to all who participated. Volunteer Blessing On Saturday, May 19, during the 5 pm Mass, we will recognize the hundreds of parishioners who have participated in the REST dinners, Brown Bag Lunch program and the St. Vincent de Paul Society with a special blessing. These groups have made a significant impact on the lives of those who are precariously housed or are living on the street. We invite those who have been a part of these programs to join us for the blessing and a reception in Centennial Hall after Mass. General Prayer for the Earth-Most gracious God, we come before you to pray for the wellbeing of the planet. You alone know the full extent of the destruction we have wrought to your beautiful handiwork, and what needs to be done to remedy it. We pray for the people around the globe who suffer because of environmental damage. We pray for the defenseless creatures harmed or made extinct by our selfishness and ignorance. We pray for the oceans, air, mountains, plants, and soil, that life and health may again pulse in them. We pray that we humans have a change of heart and stop harming the planet. Pour out your Holy Spirit on us that we may have the passion and wisdom to work effectively to restore your creation. Guide us in our personal, church and community efforts. Give us strength to continue on with this work when it is difficult and requires sacrifice. Bless the Earth and all its life in every way. We make this prayer through Christ, our Lord. Amen.

5 GREEN TIP: As much as we love our gadgets, their production and disposal are harming the environment and our health. The toxic pollution created by discarded cell phones, televisions, ink cartridges, stereos and batteries harms people. But there are things we can do as consumers and citizens to address this problem: Use products for their lifespan. We regularly discard perfectly functional products because a newer model hits the shelves. This mindset is gobbling up resources around the world. Think before you buy. Buy refurbished. Previously owned, good-as-new phones, computers, and cameras save resources, and are less expensive than new products. Look for manufactured-certified refurbished products. Recycle responsibly. Recycling electronics is important, but the industry is not well-monitored. Old electronics are often exported to poor countries where they poison local communities. Look for e-stewards certification to ensure your products are recycled responsibly. Manufacturers often have takeback programs as well. Recycle or refill empty ink cartridges. Getting your cartridges refilled can save you a lot of money, as this usually costs about half the price of a new cartridge. Many stores take in empty cartridges to recycle. Donate or sell. Give your old computers, stereos and televisions a new home. Craigslist, Freecycle and community listservs are great places to sell or donate your used electronics. Be sure to delete sensitive data before donating. Repair instead of replace. Repair broken parts of electronic devices as often as possible instead of replacing the item altogether. Companies like Fairphone are making "modular" products that are easier to repair. Ask your favorite companies about repair options.
