2 Dear Parishioners, We have heard the parable of the prodigal son many times and are familiar with the essential message and meaning of this parable. The parable highlights what true forgiveness is about. In the parable the younger son takes his inheritance, leaves home, spends it all and then returns home. The father welcomes him back without even questioning how he lost everything. Everything is forgiven and forgotten. We call the younger son the prodigal'. The word comes from Latin 'prodigus', meaning 'lavish'. Yes, the son was lavish and reckless. But the father was even more so: the father was lavish with his mercy and forgiveness. And since the story is focused on the father we should call it the story of the 'Prodigal Father' rather than the story of the 'Prodigal Son'. Often we hear these words, I have forgiven what was done to me, but I will never be able to forget it. The message and the challenge of the parable is just the opposite. God forgives and forgets because of his unconditional love. We are asked to do the same with those who have hurt us, to forgive and to forget. There is also a kind of forgiveness that is worse than no forgiveness at all: it is when you are made to feel even guiltier for having offended such a forgiving and merciful person; you have incurred a debt you can never repay. If you are not forgiven from the heart you are not really forgiven at all. In the parable the father says, Quickly bring the finest robe and put it on him, put a ring on his finger. That ring meant that he was a member of the family, not a servant. This was warm and whole-hearted forgiveness and that is the only real kind of forgiveness! Yours sincerely, Fr. Jose Shaji, Pastor RECONCILIATION AND CELEBRATION OF MERCY Pope Francis invites every parish to celebrate the year of mercy in a tangible way. At St Anselm, we will have a communal penance service on Tuesday, 8 th of March at 7:00 pm. There will be opportunity to receive the sacrament of reconciliation individually. After the service the Blessed Sacrament will be exposed for prayer and adoration. The church will be open the entire night for prayer in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament. We will conclude this event with the morning Mass at 8:00 am on Wednesday, the 9 th of March. I would like to invite you to come to the church during the night to spend a little time in prayer. To facilitate that and to make sure that there is someone in the church during the night I am asking you to signup if you plan to come to the church to pray. You will find signup sheets at the entrance of the church. I hope this will be an opportunity to experience the mercy of God. St. Anselm Church Seder Supper Wednesday, March 16th, 2016 Centennial Hall following 5:30pm Mass. All are welcome, we can accommodate 40 people so please RSVP early to the rectory office The meal is a combination of the Jewish Seder and the commemoration of the Last Supper celebrated by Jesus before his crucifixion. The evening includes a full lamb supper. Donation of $10/ person or $20/family. 3 Saturday, March 12, 2016 St. Anselm Centennial Hall 9am 11:30am Women Called and Sent: Carrie Rehak, PhD, School of Applied Theology, Graduate Theological Union, Berkeley. Through interactive engagement with artistic expressions, botanical arts and selections from scripture, we will explore the role of women and the natural world in anointing practices in early Christianity, with roots in ancient Judaism and the Greco-Roman world. We will learn more about this ancient practice and its meaning and significance in our lives today as Women Called and Sent! Come and share. 9 11:30 am St. Anselm Church, Ross. Call or REST Signature Campaign 95 parishioners and Ross Valley residents attended the 1st MOC Civic Academy here a week ago to learn more about the quest for a permanent home for REST (Rotating Emergency Shelter Team). A signature campaign, with the goal of 6,000 signatures, was launched. REST is finishing its 8 th year of citizens preparing, sitting down to dinners and providing a place to sleep for 40 men and 20 women each night from Nov. - Apr. It began with the understanding that churches, synagogues and non-profits would provide a temporary service until the County provided a more permanent solution. 3 of the 5 Supervisorial seats are up for election this June. The signature campaign is a way of letting the Supervisors and candidates know that there is support for a year round shelter. Over 170 signatures have been collected at St. Anselm so far, at the Civic Academy over 1,500 signatures were pledged. Many parishioners have taken packets to collect signatures of friends and neighbors. The next Civic Academy is at Venetia Valley School, N. San Pedro Rd, San Rafael on March 14 th at 7pm. I have put them together randomly. I will bring your suggestions to the Pastoral Council and see how they can be implemented in the parish. I am not saying that all of them can be or will be implemented. But we will study them in the Pastoral Council. 1. Change the Sunday morning Mass times to bring back the 11:30 am Mass. 2. The website needs to be updated regularly. Information regarding deaths, funerals etc. should be published in the website and bulletin. Publish the names and contact information of Pastoral Council and Finance Council members. Publish the pastoral and Finance council minutes. Events that take place in the parish and in the neighboring parishes should be published sufficiently early. 3. Weekday Mass readings and prayers are not found in the Missalettes that are currently in use. Have missalettes that have the daily readings. The missalettes we use are too bulky. 4. Order more of the little black books, Blue books that are given out before the beginning of Lent and Advent. 5. Make new parishioners feel welcome. Have a parish dinner only for new parishioners. A welcome package to be given to new parishioners that has information about the parish. 6. Have adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. Announce in the bulletin information regarding Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament at St Sebastian. 7. Adult faith formation classes by Nick Case are very good. The parish should continue with it. 8. There is need of a suggestion box. 9. The parish need a youth group to get young people involved with the parish. Get them involved with rest program, invite them to be lectors, cantors and Eucharistic ministers. Adopt a student as they leave for college. 10. Have a men s group. 11. Have parish dinners for both men and women. 12. Have regular retreats or mission for the parish. 13. There is a disconnect between the church and the school. Bridge the disconnect. 5 News of St. Anselm Parish Dear Parishioners, The St. Anselm Parish Finance Council is grateful that you have entrusted us as stewards of St. Anselm s finances. One of the key tenets of our council is transparency. Consequently, we thought this brief article could provide a window into the Finance Council s members, how we serve our parish, and examples of projects we have undertaken. Our Members: The St. Anselm Finance Council is comprised Father Jose, Deacon Bob Meave and four lay members from the parish. The lay members are Matthew McGrath (Chair), David Churton (former Chair), Steve Easley and Randolph Scott (CPA). Each of the members has experience in finance and in other areas of business. We have each assumed an area of focus allowing each member to contribute more fully his unique talents and see projects from inception through to completion. How We Operate: The Finance Council is expressly established and mandated by Canon Law. The council s role is to assist and advise the pastor in overseeing and controlling the financial affairs of the parish. This is a key element in promoting the financial health of a parish, assuring accountability and assisting the pastor with his temporal responsibilities. In order to fulfill this responsibility, the St. Anselm Finance Council meets monthly to review parish (including school) finances, discuss key business matters and make recommendations to Father Jose on areas for financial and operational improvements. Key Parish Projects: The Finance Council has been active in recent years with a number of projects and initiatives. The centennial building project required particular attention, including finishing building improvements and managing the Archdiocese loan required to finance construction. We thank all of those who contributed their time, talent and treasure to making the new rectory and Centennial Hall a tremendous success that will serve the parish for many generations to come. Moreover, we are pleased to report that our Archdiocese loan, which began at over $1 million, should be repaid in full this year. In terms of the day-to-day activities, the Parish s finances are stable. While many parishes in the Archdiocese have suffered from a declining offertory, St. Anselm s collections have remained flat. The clergy, staff and Finance Council consistently look for opportunities to facilitate contributions and manage expenses. One such area is electronic giving, where we have identified a new program called Vanco, which will make contributing easier and reduce service fees. This represents a small sample of key projects. As we look to the future, you can be assured that we will continue to serve our parishioners by maintaining strong controls and diligence in addressing areas for improvement. We thank you again for entrusting the Parish Finance Council with the stewardship of St. Anselm s resources.
