2 Dear Parishioners, Jesus spoke to his disciples about his impending suffering and death on their way to Jerusalem. James and John picked a bad moment to ask the question, Grant that in your glory we may sit one at your right and the other at your left. Personal ambition and selfishness blinded them to what Jesus was going through. The other disciples were also guilty of the same. Mark writes, When the ten heard this they became indignant. Probably, they were more cunning and were waiting for the right moment. Three years of listening to the words of Jesus and living with him did not change them. It gives hope for all of us! Our personal ambition and selfishness can blind us to the suffering and pain of others. Every Christian community should be built on love, kindness and compassion. In our own community there are many who are dealing with issues such as marital problems, addictions, loss of job, financial problems, sickness and death. Are we open to the suffering and pain of others? May we work to build up a parish community where we can truly care for one another, setting aside our own personal ambitions and selfish plans! 3 PARKING IN OUR CHURCH LOT Only park in the indicated spaces, please. Parking elsewhere, such as along curbs or near the exit is a safety hazard. Emergency vehicles must have clear access at all times, need be. Feeding the Hungry Our long tradition of sharing dinners with the homeless continues. St. Anselm's has the opportunity to participate in The Street Chaplaincy Dinners. The dinners are held on Tuesday nights at the First Presbyterian Church in San Rafael. We will provide and share an evening meal with those precariously housed and those living on the streets at least 6 times a year. If you would like to participate, contact 117plangley@gmail.com. High school and middle school students are welcomed to participate (middle school students would need to be accompanied by a parent or guardian). Memorial Mass As a part of All Souls Day remembrances, a special Memorial Mass will be celebrated on Sunday, November 4th at 10:00. Following the Mass, a reception will be held in Centennial Hall. The names of parishioners and family members who have died in the past year will be announced during the Mass. We invite you to submit any names you would like to be included as well as any framed photograph of your loved one. Please include your name & phone number on the back of the frame. The photo will be displayed on a table in the Sanctuary during the month of November. Please submit the names and photos to the church office by November 1st. This Fall, there will be hundreds of communities in North America, simultaneously hosting a 40 Days For Life campaign from now until November 4, Please consider becoming a prayer volunteer by joining others to pray the Rosary outside of Planned Parenthood at 2 H Street, in San Rafael, 6:00am-6:00pm. This time will just be about prayer- there will be no confrontations. Cursillo News! WHAT IS CURSILLO? Cursillo is a Spanish word meaning short course. This short course in Christianity begins with a three day weekend where lay people and clergy share their experiences and perspective on the love of God, the Christian life, and the Christian community. The teachings of Christ are discussed in a climate of joy and community. Those attending are curious, searching, discovering, and growing Christians who will have the opportunity to share their thoughts and ideas about Christianity with others. The Marin County Board of Supervisors is devoting a public workshop to the topic in its commitment to engage residents in solution-oriented approaches to the most complicated and concerning issues facing communities in Marin. The workshop is set for 9 a.m. Tuesday, October 23, in the Board chamber of the Marin County Civic Center in San Rafael. The session will be led by County staff and will include input from other stakeholders and community partners. Residents are invited to attend and participate at the end of the workshop when a panel of presenters will provide answers to public questions. It will be webcast live through the County s website and be televised live on Comcast Channel 27 for Comcast and AT&T subscribers.
