2 Dear parishioners, As we are getting closer to Christmas, we are getting busier with preparations. Being busy can be good or bad. People sometimes tell me, You are very busy. I hope it is good busy. Being bad busy is being involved with problems, worries or issues that are unnecessarily created. And so much of our time and energy is wasted in dealing with such issues. Being good busy is being involved with things that are worth doing, doing things that bring joy and happiness to ourselves, our families and friends. It can also be strenuous, but it can bring with it a great sense of fulfillment, satisfaction and genuine joy. May these days before Christmas be a good busy time for everyone! Yours Sincerely, Fr. We the members of St. Anselm's SVdP Conference; Bill Langley, Elizabeth Melone, Pat Cahill, Joan Madden, Libby Carra, Mariel Claxton, Marlene De Voto, Roberto Rivera, Eileen Seifert, Sally Held, Doreen Malin, and Matthew McGrath, thank parishioners for the donations they provided to the parish SVdP conference in fiscal year 2015, Oct to Sept During the year the conference received 76 requests for help. On-call members contacted requesters and distributed $20, to help 150 men, women and children. The monetary assistance provided was used for food, rent, water, gas and/or electric utilities, vehicle repair, medical or dental care or basic furniture. In addition, $2, was provided to other neighboring parishes which requested assistance. Your donations to help the poor demonstrate your love, willingness and generosity in giving. Thank you for your continuing support, especially the second collection on 5th Sundays. When was my last confession? There will be a Penance Service at 7:00 pm on Wednesday, December 16th, at St. Anselm Church. The Service will include a brief reading and reflection, followed by an opportunity for individual confessions. As Pope Francis has stated, if a lot of time has passed since your last confession, Don t lose even one more day. Go. When your confession is over, you ll leave free, great, beautiful, forgiven, clean, happy -- this is what s beautiful about confession. Encourage others to attend! St. Anselm School Gingerbread House Workshop & Wreath Sale Help support St. Anselm School by purchasing a Gingerbread House or a Wreath for the holidays. On Dec. 6 St. Anselm School will be selling Christmas Wreaths for $25 after 8:00a.m. and 10:00a.m. Masses. Also, on Dec. 6th in Centennial Hall, celebrate the Christmas season by decorating your very own Gingerbread House, or purchase a to-go house to decorate at your leisure. Space is limited so sign up soon! The Gingerbread House Workshop will have two seatings, 11:00a.m. and 1:00p.m. in Centennial Hall. The cost for each house is $45.00 and no more than two people per house ($5.00 for each additional person). To reserve a house please go to: gingerbread-houses.html December Evening of Reflection Images of Mary: On Tues., Dec 8 th, at 7:30 pm in Centennial Hall, Sr. Celeste Arbuckle will present an evening of reflection on Mary, Mother of Light. Sr. Celeste is the San Francisco archdiocesan director of religious education and youth ministry. Those attending are encouraged to bring an art piece or statute of Mary, which will be used in reflecting on the image of light that Mary brings to us in our lives today by connecting us with Jesus. 3 ST. ANSELM HOLIDAY BAZAAR: Join us for the first annual St. Anselm Holiday Bazaar, Monday, Dec. 7 th, 2:30 4:30pm in Centennial Hall! This fun event will feature various vendors selling beautiful holiday gifts, as well as our inaugural Spirit Sale of St. Anselm-branded clothing. One of the featured vendors is St. Anselm parent Gitte Cieply s mother Ulla Thomsen, who will be selling her gorgeous jewelry for adults and children. Our Spirit Sale will include St. Anselm-branded socks, spandex shorts, baseball caps, and Christmas ornaments. This will be a special Advent season presentation by a member of the Society of the Divine Word, an international missionary congregation. Father Stephen served as a missionary in the Philippines for nine years and has been on the faculty of the Catholic Theological Union for 26 years. In 2014 he was one of four Catholics appointed by the Vatican to the Commission on World Mission and Evangelization at the World Council of Churches. He will share his reflections on the Holy Spirit s stirring of the thirsts of the world and the call to join the Spirit s Mission to slake those thirsts. 5 News of St. Anselm Parish SPALDING, NEBRASKA I was in Nebraska for a few days the week before Thanksgiving. The weather was mild. I visited a priest friend of mine who is the Pastor of St. Michael s Church in Spalding, Nebraska. Spalding is a small town that was originally called Halifax. It was founded in 1875 by a colony of Irish Catholics. It was renamed Spalding in 1881 in honor of bishop John Lancaster Spalding. The town has a population of less than 500 people today. The people who live in and around the town are mostly farmers and ranchers. I was able to spend a few days with Fr. Antony the pastor of the Church. We went to school together growing up. We are class mates (glass mates would be more appropriate!) St Michael s church has a wonderful parish community with around 200 families. The church also has a high school. St. Michael s church is one of the most beautiful churches I have seen in a while. It is a brick building and the inside is very pretty. The church has just 200 hundred families that supports it. I would say that the church is bigger than St Anselm s church. They have only one weekend service that fills the church. Today it stands as a living monument to the faith of the Irish Catholics who settled in and around the town of Spalding! Fr. Jose Shaji, Pastor
