2 Dear Parishioners, The Gospel reading of today is taken from the Bread of Life discourse from John, chapter 6. The Jews are shocked to hear the words of Jesus that his flesh is to be eaten and his blood drunk. It may even be shocking to us because it appears to be so graphic. Jesus words are to be understood in a different way. John uses the word sarx (flesh) instead of the word soma (body). Soma speaks of the human body that is tangible to the senses, while sarx implies human nature in its completeness. When we use the words flesh and blood we are referring to the entire human being. The church has placed this solemnity after Easter. By this we are reminded that the Resurrection spills over into the Eucharist and what we receive is the Risen Christ who is present in the Church. It is with great joy that we extend to our St. Anselm Community an invitation to share in the celebration of our Pastor, Fr. Jose s, 25th Silver Jubilee to the Priesthood. Please join us on Sunday, June 25th, for the 10:00am Mass. A reception will take place in Centennial Hall immediately following the Mass. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION At the heart of today's solemnity is a Eucharistic procession, held in many parishes, that calls to mind the procession of Holy Thursday, yet has a purpose different from the somber adoration in the night watch. In the late Middle Ages, a procession through the city with the Blessed Sacrament was an occasion of heartfelt joy and great emotion. In a time when people seldom approached the altar to receive Holy Communion, the procession through the streets, past homes and workplaces, was a vibrant reminder that Christ was with them as a dear companion and guide. Every year on this day, a joyful procession winds through the streets of Rome from the Lateran cathedral. A few years ago, Pope John Paul II, deeply moved at the sight of the throng accompanying the sacred host, said that we ought to feel profoundly united with the faithful everywhere in the world at such a moment. "Before our mind's eye all the Churches of the world, from East to West, from North to South, are present." 5 Laudato Si: Dialogue on the Environment in the International Community Beginning in the middle of the last century and overcoming many difficulties, there has been a growing conviction that our planet is a homeland and that humanity is one people living in a common home. An interdependent world not only makes us more conscious of the negative effects of certain lifestyles and models of production and consumption which affect us all; more importantly, it motivates us to ensure that solutions are proposed from a global perspective, and not simply to defend the interests of a few countries. Interdependence obliges us to think of one world with a common plan. Pope Francis, Laudato Si (164) Patrick Carolan, Executive Director, Franciscan Action Network, comments: Issues like poverty and migration are connected with climate crisis. When there is no water, crops fail and people fall into poverty. Widespread poverty and resource scarcity lead to mass migration. When large countries like the U.S. deny the reality of climate change and pull out of commitments holding us accountable for doing our part to curb global temperature rise, we are turning our backs on the poor and vulnerable, which goes directly against our Franciscan Christian values. All-powerful God, you are present in the whole universe and in the smallest of your creatures. You embrace with your tenderness all that exists. Pour out upon us the power of your love, that we may protect life and beauty. Fill us with peace, that we may live as brothers and sisters, harming no one. O God of the poor, help us to rescue the abandoned and forgotten of this earth, so precious in your eyes. Bring healing to our lives, that we may protect the world and not prey on it, that we may sow beauty, not pollution and destruction. Touch the hearts of those who look only for gain at the expense of the poor of the earth. Teach us to discover the worth of each thing, to be filled with awe and contemplation, to recognize that we are profoundly united with each creature as we journey toward your infinite light.
