2 Dear Parishioners, In the Gospel reading of this weekend, Jesus says, The greatest among you must be your servant. Whoever exalts himself will be humbled; but whoever humbles himself will be exalted. The world considers humility as a sign of weakness. The virtue of humility is meant for weak people. The word humility comes from the Latin word, humus, which means soil. Humility is the basis or the foundation of all other virtues. St. Augustine said that God accepts sacrifices only from the altar of humility. God can exalt us only if we are humble! Yours sincerely, Fr. Jose Shaji, Pastor Liturgical Ministry Formation/Training Saint Anselm (for all of Marin) November 11-10am 3pm November 18-10am 12pm The Office of Worship offers six hour formation sessions for new and experienced Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion and Readers. In the morning of the first Saturday, ministers are introduced to sacramental theology, particularly that of the Eucharist by Rev. David Pettingill. Next, our presenters who are experts in the field offer technical and spiritual direction for the minister s specific liturgical role. Finally, extraordinary ministers prepare for bringing Holy Communion to the sick and homebound, while readers conclude with coaching in proclamation and oral interpretation. Contact your parish to pre-register. To maximize cooperation between parishes, schools, and the Office of Worship, each participant is to have the recommendation of the Pastor or his delegate (a parochial vicar, staff member or another charged with the coordination of liturgical ministries). In order to receive a certificate of completion, ministers must attend BOTH Saturdays and will focus on one ministry at the training. Please bring your own lunch. 3 Are We Entering a Post-Religious Era? November 12, 11:15 a.m-12:30 p.m Up to 40% of young adults describe themselves as nones, belonging to no single religious tradition. However, they believe in God and think religious communities contribute to the common good. Come hear noted author and UC Berkeley lecturer Kaya Oakes discuss her findings of what s behind this group of emerging adults and their relationship to religion. St. Anselm Church, Shady Lane at Bolinas Ave, Ross COPING WITH THE HOLIDAYS The upcoming holidays can be particularly difficult for those who are grieving the loss of a loved one. The void left by their deaths is more deeply felt at this time of year and one might be filled with confusion and, at times, dread to face this time. St. Anselm s Grief Ministry will address the issues surrounding this challenging season and offer practical suggestions for coping. If you would like to participate in our program of feeding the homeless on a Saturday night, please stanselm.restdinners@yahoo.com. You will then be sent a link to our online signupgenius calendar where you can sign-up for a date you are available. The season begins Dec. 2nd and ends April 28th. Volunteers attend an hour long planning meeting, prepare a portion of the meal and, most importantly, sit down and share a meal with our guests. On October 31 st, Gail Pierce, our parishioner, church photographer, and dental hygienist, is retiring after practicing for 60 years, 54 of those years in a dental office in Sausalito. Gail loved her job! She would talk about how she is now taking care of the third generation of some of her patients. What an accomplishment!! In a conversation with Gail her last word could be to you" Did You Floss"? Gail is quite the artisther photography is known far and wide. For those who don`t know, Gail did the logo for our Centennial Campaign. She has a one woman show of her work at the Veteran`s Memorial behind the Civic Center. Wonderful show! We learned of another impact when so many school staff, police and fire personnel of Marin lost their homes in the North Bay fires. Yet many of us live in homes with room to spare. The St. Anselm and St. Raphael Marin Organizing Committees invite you to join us in exploring ways we can convert that extra space into living quarters that can be used by family members, a caregiver, nanny or for rental income. St. Vincent de Paul Society Vehicle Program St. Vincent de Paul of Marin has launched a new vehicle donation program in collaboration with SVDP National s vehicle vendor, CARS. Your gift supports the SVDP Free Dining Room in San Rafael which serves over 500 meals daily. The Catholic Adult Singles Association of Marin is a group of 50+ single or single again Catholics who are interested in making new friends, taking part in social activities, sharing opportunities for spiritual growth and becoming involved in volunteer projects that will benefit our parishes, our community, and one another.
