Ka Ha ilono Carolyn s Corner God is good all the time. All the time, God is good. Oh, what a Spring time United Methodist Women in Hawaii have experienced! On Saturday, March 5, at Trinity UMC in Pearl City, we celebrated the Hawaii Mission Festival. On Saturday, April 9, at Harris UMC we held our one-day Spiritual Retreat and the honoring of our Quiet Disciples. They were both awesome days. The stories that were shared by our Korean, Tongan, English women and by our young woman at the Spiritual Retreat touched my heart with their faith to continue even with hardships in their lives. Now we look forward to Summer, the special Summer that happens only once every four years in Hawaii, the School of Christian Mission. This July it will be held at Camp Pineapple 808 between Wahiawa and the North Shore near the Dole Pineapple Plantation on Kamehameha Highway. This is a new facility and we will get to experience the same studies as our California sisters have at a university campus setting. There will be separate classes for Korean and Tongan women, plus a Bridging Class for our young women, and of course the studies presented in English. Because it is only a three day event, only one study can be chosen: Haiti, Joy to the World Global Christianity, or Coming Out on the Side of Grace: Forgiveness, Restorative Justice, and Reconciliation. The cost is $200. It is an experience you will never forget. Please plan on coming July. More information and a registration form can be found in this edition of Ka Ha ilono. The Hawaii District UMW will provide a $150 air scholarship to each of our nine neighbor island chartered UMW Units from the Kokua Fund. Besides special events, many of our UMW Units are busy with service projects. See more information in the Social Action article. I m so proud that United Methodist Women from Hawaii not only hear God s message, they take action in Christian service to women, youth, and children in our community. On May 14, Haunani Nisa, our Young Women s Coordinator, will be flying to Los Angeles to participate in the LA UMW District s Young Women s Event: Interfaith Dialogue for a Culture of Peace. Because of my trips to the Mainland for UMW Conference meetings, I had gathered enough mileage points on Hawaiian Air to provide Haunani with a free trip. Because the Conference does not charge young women a registration fee to Events, this learning adventure for Haunani is not costing anything for our UMW District, just Haunani s time. Thank you, Haunani, for being willing to learn and to help to gather Hawaii s young women into the fellowship of United Methodist Women. Don t forget about our Susannah Wesley Community Center. They have had cut-backs from social services funding and need our financial support, both as United Methodist Women and members of United Methodist Churches in Hawaii. Have a Susie Sunday, have a program about what the Center is doing, make a pledge, have a speaker and video about the work they do. Remember, it is our mission center in Hawaii, also supported by Women s Division and where our US2 Missionary Intern, Katie Monfortie, serves. Don t forget to have your Units continue to send in your Gift to Mission to meet your pledge and helps Hawaii to meet our $30,000 pledge to the Conference. This is what financially helps the Women s Division to continue mission work throughout our world. Also, be looking for women who would enjoy the experience and training that serving on the UMW District Team offers. A Gift and Graces form is included in this newsletter. Think seriously of selecting at least one women from your Unit and submitting the form to our Committee of Nominations. There are always openings and help is needed. 2 Mission Coordinator for Social Action and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with God? --Micah 6:8 Our 2011 Social Action Project Meals for Our Neighbors is on the move. Part I: Meals for quarterly immigration law clinics/ Know Your Rights workshops. April 29, 2011 was our first clinic held at Harris UMC. There were three lawyers in attendance who were sponsored by The Hawaii Coalition for Immigration Reform. Our own Shirley Kuma, social action coordinator at Keolumana UMC is the FACE representative on the Hawaii Coalition for Immigration Reform council. We had about 20 people in attendance. Our Tongan language interpreter was Mr. Alofataua Kuma. A big MAHALO to our sisters from Keolumana UMW, Kilohana Tongan UMW, and Trinity UMW for the delicious meal they provided for the clinic. Thanks also to Harris UMW for allowing us to use their facility. We have two more clinics scheduled for this year. One in July (English/Korean language) and the other in October (English/Filipino). We may need some volunteer interpreters from our Methodist churches. If you are interested in volunteering to be an interpreter, call Shirley Kuma at To sign your units up for providing the meal for the remaining clinics my contact information is listed below. We need three units per clinic to provide/sponsor the meal. Part II: Meals/Snack Packs for students at Wesley Foundation- UH. The Wesley Foundation at UH provides meals and snacks, activities and a safe nurturing home away from home support community for college students, which include a number of immigrant students. Two of our Hawaii District UMW units were able to help out by providing snack packs and $200 to the Wesley Foundation for the months of April and May. Our sisters at Keolumana provided the snacks and monetary donation in April and Trinity UMW did the same for the month of May. Mahalo to our sisters from Keolumana and Trinity. We will not be needing any snack packs and monetary donations for the months of June, July, and August since most of the students don t come to the center during the summer. We will resume again in September. Please call, text or me so your units can sign up for the remaining months of Remember we need 48 snack packs and a check for $200 to help defray the cost of Tuesday meals for students at the Wesley Foundation. One UMW unit or two smaller units can co-share for the month. Peace be with all our units and God Bless you all! Clara Fau olo (808) clarafauolo@yahoo.com _ Committee on Nomination We will be needing NEW additions. It s also a special time of bonding with other United Methodist Women as we worship, pray, play, and seek transformation to fullness in the light of the Good News of Jesus Christ! 4 B -r -i -d -g-e- - - B-u-i-l-d -i -n-g... The make-up of the Bridging Class is intentionally intergenerational on a one-to-one basis. Our hope is to encourage young women 18+ to continue coming to School in the summer by helping them to discover the gifts of community and experience that their 'more seasoned' sisters in Christ have to offer as they learn and grow together. And...those same 'more seasoned' women will be gifted as well by the presence of their younger sisters in Christ as they share their perspectives and learning styles. There is much to be gained by learning, listening and discussing together. One more thing...many of our young women may not be able to afford to attend SOCM without some financial assistance. I hope that you will look for young women in your local churches who you would like to encourage to become involved with United Methodist Women. Providing young women with the opportunity to experience our "creative, supportive fellowship" at a School of Christian Mission may be a good 'investment' for the future! Blessings, Roni Kuester, Bridging Class Facilitator This summer the Bridging Class will be offering the Spiritual Growth Study: "Coming Out from the Side of Grace: Forgiveness and Reconciliation" The textbook, "The Journey", is available from the Mission Resource Center now. 5 KEY OF A WINNING ATTITUDE Reflections from Spiritual Growth Coordinator Heimoana Ofamooni You can do all things though Christ who strengthens you because greater is he that is in you than he that is in the world. In fact, whatsoever is born of God, overcometh the world, and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even are faith. He that overcomes the world is he that believes that Jesus is the son of God. But not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good. To him that overcomes, God will give to eat of the tree of life, which is in the midst of the paradise of God. He will not be hurt by the second death, but rather eat of the hidden manna, and receive a white stone with a new name written, which no man knows except he that receives it. He will also be clothed with white raiment, and instead of his name being blotted out of the book of life, Jesus will confess his name before the father and before his angles. Give thanks unto God, which always causes us to triumph in Christ knowing that no weapon formed against you will prosper, and every tongue that rises up against you in judgement you shall condemn for this is the heritage of the servants of the Lord. With God s help you can run though a troop, leap over a wall, and triumph in the works of your hands, so run that you may obtain. Thanks be to God which gives you the victory and makes you more than a conqueror, through our Lord Jesus Christ. Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the Lord delivers him out of them all. So, clap your hands and shout unto God with a voice of triumph who brings us great victory. O sing unto the Lord a new song, for he hath done marvelous things; His right hand, and his holy arm, hath gotten him the victory. He that winneth souls is wise, and you that overcome will be a pillar in the temple of God, be seated with Christ in His throne, inherit all things and God s son and he will be your God. Remember, count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus, counting everything you lose as dung, that you may win Christ. _ Visit the Kailua United Methodist Women's Thrift Shop, 1110 Kailua Rd. It is open every Wednesday from 8am 12pm. All our proceeds go to mission. We are able to make a Pledge to Mission, support other local mission, such as Suzy and Key and support out members to attend district and national events of the United Methodist Women. We can even help other units who are having rummage sales as we have an overflow of donations. We give regularly in kind donations to H5, Hale Kipa, youth outreach and Kuhio Park Terrace Family Center. Come see us any Wednesday. Mission Festival 1Suzy Skit Mission Festival 2Suzy Skit V

Lucille Yaeko Yoshimura Aiea UMC Seeking opportunities not avaialable in her hometown of Honuapo on Hawaii, Lucille and her girlfriend ventured to Honolulu after graduation from Pahala (Kau) High School. They lived in the womens dormitory at Aldersgate United Methodist Church. It was home also to young women from the phillipines; all of them desiring to broaden their horizons through jobs, educational and social opportunities. Lucille s first job was as a live in house maid where she learned meal preparation and homemaking skills. Her social life centered on the Young Adult Fellowship at the S.K. Japanese Episcopal Mission (Wesley UMC). Her Journey mellowed with marriage to Kenneth Yoshimura and the nurturing of their son, Nathan. Lucille continued her career path, building skills for jobs in business and insurance agencies. Their home in Halawa Heights is a show place of colorful, flowering plants, tended with care- giving a sense of peace to family and visitors. Both Lucille and Kenneth had health challenges requiring major surgeries and extended medical care. But, Lucille s spirit prevailed. She focused on ministering to others providing transportation to cancer patients, Grace, an outreach ministry with area schools. As an active church member and as the longest serving treasurer of the Aiea Unit, UMW she is efficient, benevolent in keeping the books and conscientiously keeping wayward members focused on their commitments. She lives out her faith Let us not lose heart in doing good, for in due time we shall reap if we do not grow weary. So then, while we have opportunity, let us do good to all men (Gal.6:12-13). Martina Domingo Acoba Aldersgate UMC In 1946, Tina s spiritual life and faith journey began at Aldersgate Methodist Church. She and her late husband, Simeon Acoba Sr. (who has passed on in 1985) were married at Aldersgate in 1942 by the late Rev. Muma. In between working as a nurse at Tripler Hospital they raised 3 children, who today are contributing members in the community; Associate Justice Simeon Acoba Jr., Carmelita Minami, an educator, and Aleta Asano, a CPA both retired. 7 Grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren are her pride and joy! After she retired from nursing, Tina served the Lord with gladness and gusto. With true commitment to officers she was elected to in the church. She diligently attended all meetings as required by her assignments: on the administrative council, and for years as the board of trustee s committee member and chairperson. She served faithfully over and above her duties. Tina gave as much fervor and commitment with the United Methodist Women Organization as President, Treasurer and Nominations Committee Chairperson. She tries to be an independent as possible by taking the handivan to get around to church and medical visits. Aldersgate is Proud to name Martina Domingo Acoba as our Quiet Disciple for 2011.

BokSoon Kim Christ UMC Mrs. BokSoon Kim was born on November 13, 1935 to parents Mr. In- Sung Choi and Mrs. Soo-Nam Lee. Mrs. Lee met a United Methodist women missionary as a young wife who had lost children due to diseases at young ages. She received Christ and God blessed her and her husband with two healthy baby girls, the older one was named BokSoon.BokSoon grew as a devout Christian and married Mr. Young- Don Kim, the second son of the pastor of her church, at age 18. Her four children, two boys and two girls, grew up listening to Bible stories their mother told them all the time. All of the children, as well as the grandchildren are now faithful members of their local churched, serving with their varied talents, music, teaching, and IT techniques. In 1974, at a very young age of 39, she was ordained as an Elder, after completing the training courses and passing a number of examinations. Women elders were rare in Korea at the time. She has been serving her in church in Korea and in Hawaii as the President of the women s group, as a leader of cell group throughout her life. Since moving to Hawaii in 1974, she had suffered 5 years with Kidney ailments, receiving frequent dialysis for 3 months. But in 1979, she received a kidney transplant and recovered good health. She was so thankful for this gift from God and spent the rest of her life serving God in her own quiet way. Her suffering with ill health prepared her for the ministry she has devoted herself to since then. Visiting and praying for the elderly, the sick, and the lonely have become the main activities of her life. She was given the Appenzellar Award for her dedicated visitation ministry at the Centennial Anniversary of Korean Methodist Church in She has come up with four principles of hospital visitations: Best time for visits is mid-afternoon when the patient is most likely to feel lonely.visitation team should be kept small, just one or two people. Visitation time should not exceed 40 minutes. Do something that the patient would enjoy. Tell stories and sing hymns with the patient.mrs. BokSoon Kim continues to bring many people closer to God by being a Quiet Disciple. Barbara Rae Fernandez First UMC We are pleased to choose our friend, Barbara Fernandez, to represent us as our Quiet Disciple for this year. She was born and raised in Michigan, was the eldest of three daughters, graduated from Northern Michigan University and then earned a Master s in Education from Michigan State University. Barbara and her husband, Diego, were both teachers for the military dependents on Air Force Base or Army Post in Yokota, Japan. Barbara also taught in Michigan, California, Germany and England. Barbara and Diego have a daughter and a son, three granddaughters and one grandson. Barb enjoys tracing family genealogy, watching cooking shows, traveling, reading and attending plays and sporting events. Since retiring in 1997, she has been a member of the First Church and actively involved as a loyal member of the UMW. She is presently Mission Coordinator for social action and carries this responsibility with care. Barbara is so attentive to the other activities of our unit and does much to help us fulfill our mission calling. Be sure to introduce yourself to Barbara. You will appreciate her and enjoy all that she is.

Thelma Tengan Keolumana UMC Kimiko Sugamura Harris UMC Our UMW unit at Harris has selected Kimi Sugamura as our Quiet Disciple. She has been a member of Harris Church since 1954, singing in the alto section of the Chancel Choir. At first she resisted joining UMW but later when she did, was immediately made the units Secretary and has served faithfully in that capacity. She has also served as secretary of our church council for many years and has been coordinating Monday soup preparation for HIS since She is on a number of church committees: Visitation, Global Ministries, and Healing Ministry which offers prayers and anointing. Kimi was in Japan when Pearl Harbour occurred and had to re-establish her American citizenship before entering Hawaii. Everything Kimi does is in a quiet and unassuming way, showing her love for others in action. Efficient, caring, very dedicated and totally committed to UMW and the Church life is Keolumana s UMW Quiet Disciple Thelma Tengan. Unassuming and easy-to-get-along-with, Thelma was born in Lahaina, Maui and graduated from Lahainaluna High School where she excelled in math. Moving to Oahum Thelma attended Phillips Commercial School during which time she dated and later married her husband David. Upon moving to Kailua, husband David won the distinction of being named the 100th Member to join Keolumana UMC during its formative years in the late 60 s. They remain staunch members. They have two adult children, David jr. and daughter Phyllis. Until her retirement, Thelma worked in a Honolulu accounting firm. She has always been involved in the financial life of the UMW and the church. She served as assistant treasurer of the church in the 90 s and since then as treasurer of the church, she has been treasurer our UMW for countless years. Thelma continues to serve as communion steward, a job she has held for many years. Every Sunday she helps with refreshment service and she helped instigate our UMW mission money book table at church. An avid reader, Thelma continues as a participant in the UMW Reading Program. Church Members especially love her mango cream cheese bars and all the other goodies she furnishes for our church activities. Keolumana UMW is honored to have Thelma Tengan as our Quiet Disciple!

Losa Latai Misi Trinity UMC Barbara Neff Kilohana UMC Barbara Neff has spent years serving God, both inside and outside of the church. Regular church attendance, Adult Sunday School, Weekly prayer groups/bible studies, and UMW meetings have been a part of her life. The notes that she has written to members of her congregation have been written from her heart. Supporting her husband s lay ministry was a vital part of her discipleship. She attended his Lay Speaking Classes and brought along home-baked cookies. The best parties they hosted in their home, for adult fellowship and Adult Sunday School, were always so warm and fun. A ministry very dear to her, was helping to coordinate and serve meals to the homeless at IHS. Volunteering outside of the church has been important to Barbara. She logged in over 1,000 hours with Navy Relief at Pearl Harbor, which included transporting military families to their medical appointments. While living in Hawaii Kai Retirement Community she continues to join the Adult Lei making class where she leads us in prayer, shares her study notes for the morning and encourages the class with our daily lives. When the Kilohana UMW started meeting at the retirement community, Barbara would make our reservations for the meeting room and be sure that the facilities were ready for our use. As she recuperates from some medical concerns, she still keeps track of the UMW group meeting at her home, and we hope that she will be joining us again soon. Through her faith, she teaches us wisdom. Kilohana UMW is pleased to recognize Barbara Neff as our Quiet Disciple! Losa Latai Misi better known as, Latai, from Trinity UMC and from the District of Hawaii. Latai was born on December 20 th 1944 in Tonga on the beautiful island of Vava u. She is a mother of 8 children whom all reside in Tonga. Latai is happily married to Sione Misi. They both reside in Waipahu and has been an active member of TUMC since We honor Losa Latai Misi as our Quiet disciple at TUMC for her love and dedication as a faithful servant of God. Latai has a heart of Gold.. She loves to read the bible and enjoys sharing her love of God with others. She is one who would give you her last dollar, along with her big smile! From 1997 to present, Latai has served as a Tongan Lay Preacher at Trinity. She enjoys the opportunity through Lay Preaching in the sharing of God s Word. Her gift of preaching has also extended to leading the UMW Tongan Women on several occasions in bible study. She has also served at Trinity as the Head Teacher for Sunday School in the Tongan Language. She was able to prepare/coordinate our regular Sunday school classes as well as preparing our children for the annual bible exam and FAKA-MEI (white Sunday). Latai enjoys singing in the church choir. Although, her first language is tongan and speaks limited English; she enjoys attending our UMW District events to learn and experience what we are all about. She loves to cook for others and always have lots to share at all the potlucks at Trinity. For several years now, Latai has been having pain to both of her legs and needs to get around with the use of a walker. That has never stopped her from coming to church and praising God or serving HIM faithfully. She is a blessing, a true inspiration and a great encouragement to all of us at Trinity. As we continue on our spiritual life journey as United Methodist Women, we thank God for you, Latai!

She worked her way up to a Practical Nurse at the Waialua Hospital, which is now gone. She and her husband, Fuji, moved to Wahiawa in 1959 with their three boys, Kennerd, Wynne, and Neil. She worked for years for two doctors in Wahiawa as their office nurse. A church friend once told me that she was quick and sharp at her job. She loved going to church, Sunday was not Sunday without spending time with the Lord and other Christians. Her son, Neil, noted that he has never seen his mother angry. What an accomplishment! He remembered that his parents were trusting and caring people, who worked hard and provided them with a home that was warm and inviting. Neil used to bring his friends over to eat her delicious lemon meringue pies and brownies. She baked chocolate chip cookies that were to die for. She enjoyed children, babysitting her grandchildren and volunteering at the Iliahi Elementary School, across from their home. All the children knew Grandma and Grandpa Oho. They were team, much appreciated and full of Aloha. She is a meticulous housekeeper and rooted tirelessly for her children and grandchildren as she watched them play different sports. Though Asako used to get car-sick, she went to the mainland to visit her 3 younger sisters in California, as well as her son, Kennerd and his family. She was overjoyed to have one great granddaughter born. She visited the Grand Canyon, Los Angeles, Molokai, and University of Redlands for that great granddaughter s graduation, and other places, despite her motion sickness. When her husband s body was found at Sharks Cove, she was a tower of strength and said that she was glad he was doing something he loved, which was diving for octopus. Grace filled, we long for a world that moves from brokenness to wholeness, from suffering to healing, from injustice to justice, from scarcity to abundance, from estrangement to reconciliation, and from despair to hope! As partners in God s Mission, the transformation we seek today is that of taking what is broken and restoring it to fullness in the light of the Good News of Jesus Christ! Coming Out on the Side of Grace: Forgiveness and Reconciliation This is a spiritual growth study, which deals with the theme of how individuals, families, and communities are called to a life long journey of practicing forgiveness, justice, and reconciliation in our relational lives. This study aims to bring about personal and social transformation. Joy to the World Global Christianity This is the social study. Joy to the World" is a shout of celebration penned by the great hymn writer Isaac Watts in Although it is a beloved Christmas carol, its message does not stop at Christmas Day. The deeper message is not about the birth of a baby, but about fundamental changes brought into the world by the coming of Jesus Christ. Haiti This geographical study is an overview of the cultures that shaped Haiti s past and the ongoing legacy of colonialism, along with glimpses into the heart and soul of Haiti s people through pictures and Creole adages. The impact of the devastating January 12, 2010 earthquake is also addressed. Bridging Class The make-up of the bridging class is intentionally intergenerational on a one to one basis. Our hope is to encourage young women 18+, to attend School of Christian Mission and help them discover the gifts of community and experience their more seasoned Sisters in Christ have to offer as they learn and grow together CALIFORNIA SCHOOL OF CHRISTIAN MISSION All Things Made New BIOLA UNIVERSITY July 21-23, 2011 (Korean women) July 22-24, 2011 WHAT IS THE SCHOOL OF CHRISTIAN MISSION? Dean: Collette Andersen (808) Assistant Dean: Maxine Wheeler CAMP PINEAPPLE Kamehameha Highway Wahiawa, HI (808) STUDY OFFERINGS As followers of Christ, we hold fast to God s intentions to bring hope and wholeness to the world through Jesus Christ. Grace filled, we long for a world that moves from brokenness to wholeness, from suffering to healing, from injustice to justice, from scarcity to abundance, from estrangement to reconciliation, and from despair to hope! As partners in God s Mission, the transformation we seek today is taking what is broken and restoring it to fullness in the light of the Good News of Jesus Christ! Our hope is to encourage young women 18+ to attend School of Christian Mission and help them discover the gifts of community and experience their more seasoned Sisters in Christ have to offer as they learn and grow 2011 HAWAII SCHOOL OF CHRISTIAN MISSION All Things Made New CAMP PINEAPPLE 808 July 7-9, 2011 (Korean women) July 8-10, 2011 WHAT IS THE SCHOOL OF CHRISTIAN MISSION? Schools of Christian Mission are opportunities to study a spiritual growth topic, a geographic area, and an issue impacting society. Participants grow in understanding of the mission of the church in the current world context. The studies give particular attention to the responsibilities of women in the fulfillment of mission. This mission education program strengthens the leadership and membership of United Methodist Women.
