For clergy, Clergy Orders Luncheon will begin at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, June 13. REMINDERS FOR REGISTERED PARTICIPANTS: 1. All those who registered are required to check in at Hunsaker University Center before your first event, and (if staying on campus) to move into your assigned residence hall room. You will receive your official badge, meal card, room key, and a member guide. 2. Tip collection will be taken during the time of our Hawaii District Breakfast (Thursday, June 14th in the Casa Loma Room) for the workers who will be making all the beds on campus. 3. Local churches should prepare a gift or lei for those who have pastors leaving, incoming, retiring, and/ or being commissioned/ordained. REMINDERS FOR GROUP BUS PASSENGERS: 1. The bus will depart at 6:15 a.m. from LAX on Wednesday, June 13th. 2. Blake Vance and Salia Garcia from Aiea UMC will be the designated bus leaders. 3. Tip collection will be taken during the bus rides for each driver. 4. The bus going from LAX airport to University of Redlands, will stop at Claremont Shopping Mall for breakfast. It is only a one-hour stopover. 5. The bus will start boarding at 5:30 a.m. and depart at 6:00 a.m. from University of Redlands on Sunday, June 17th. 2 Ministry Musings from the District Superintendent ANNUAL CONFERENCE MISSION STATEMENT: [Inspiring the World as Passionate Followers of Jesus Christ] I went on a pilgrimage to Korea for the Spiritual Immersion experience with 28 pastors and lay people during May Even though I was born and raised in Korea, I needed spiritual renewal and revitalization for my journey of life. It was an awesome experience of God s love that was shown by Bupyung KMC pastors and members. Their extravaganza hospitality and love were not easy to forget or be dismissed. What a love and what a fellowship in Christ! Every Early Morning Prayer service at 5:00am was a time for spiritual revival for our soul, and visiting local churches were a time of learning about God s power and witness. God is still working in the Body of Christ, who is our source of strength and call. We visited three churches besides our hosting church, Bupyung KMC. Those churches were various different sizes between 200 to 92,000 members. However, all those churches have their own identity and dynamics in terms of their ministries. Yes, God is still working and using the church as his instrument of salvation for His people. One of the sweetest memories I shall carry is that of a children s choir that sang for us on one afternoon while we were there. It was a children s choir of about 12 children. They sang that Fanny Crosby children s song of faith called, If I Come to Jesus. Not only were their voices lovely, but also the faith with which those children sang touched our hearts deeply. Yes, if we come Jesus, we can again taste the sweet graciousness of our Lord with hearts as pure as those of children, free of our sin and our struggles as we hear and respond to Jesus our Savior who gently calls us to follow him. Yes, Jesus calls us to join the fellowship with Him in order to Thirst No More! Grace & peace, Rev. Se Hee Han Hawaii District Superintendent BISHOP GRANT HAGIYA S VISIT TO OAHU Way Forward Discussion on July 14, 2018 Bishop Grant Hagiya will be meeting with clergy and laity in the Hawaii District regarding the Way Forward decision on Saturday, July 14th. He will be available to answer any questions or concerns that you may have. Please mark the date on your calendars for this very important event with the Bishop. 3 MESSAGE FROM THE DISTRICT LAY LEADER Greetings, Hawaii District Brothers and Sisters in Christ! From May 17 to 25, I was truly blessed to be a part of a Spiritual Pilgrimage to (Seoul), Korea with 27 others from Hawaii, LA and Chicago. It s not possible to describe all the memorable events of this trip in a newsletter article. I hope that a short video will be shown at a future District event to show highlights of our experience. Please allow me to just share what impacted me most. We were a nicely blended group of two District Superintendents, clergy and their spouses, and laity. Ethnically, we were made up of Tongans, Koreans, haole, and locals. We stayed in dormitory rooms at Bupyeong Methodist Church, and it was almost like staying at a first-class hotel even the bath towels had their insignia BP. The facility has a ballroom sized reception lobby with marble floors and staircases, two basement parking floors, two large dining rooms with large commercial kitchens, and a beautiful Love Sanctuary used for special services and weddings, that seats three hundred. To give you an idea of the size of the main sanctuary, when Bupyeong Methodist Church celebrated its 78th anniversary at the May 20 worship service, the pews were filled with about 3,800 people! Every morning at 5:00, our group participated with others in a prayer service, which for me, was a new way to commune with God. Our itinerary included visiting two thriving Methodist churches one in the suburbs and one in a more rural district that were started by pastors who were sent out from Bupyeoung. We went to a Christian missionary museum/cemetery and learned about how missionaries helped to build orphanages, schools and hospitals and about how strongly Christian Koreans today feel called by God to evangelize to the world. We stood in a circle, held hands and prayed for the unification of North and South Korea at the Odusan Unification Tower that sits along the Han River, which separates the two regions. My cup runneth over with gratitude and renewed faith as I thank God for the opportunity to have participated in this awesome trip. Truly, it was a spiritual pilgrimage! I hope you re inspired by reading about our experience. As we enter the summer season, may you all have time to spend with your `ohana and perhaps take a vacation or staycation, and renew your relationship with God. When: July 9-11, 2018 Where: Christ United Methodist Church Ohana Conference is bringing together clergywomen with Pan-Asian and Pacific Islander backgrounds. Registration (after May 1) is only accepted after your travel arrangements are made. Everyone is welcome to join the opening worship with Bishop Grant Hagiya on Monday, July 9th at 7:00 p.m.

4 ATTENTION PASTORS, ASSOCIATE PASTORS AND LAY LEADERS: As you may recall, Bishop Grant Hagiya has asked the District Lay Leaders and Associate District Lay Leaders of the North, South, East, West and Hawaii Districts, to show how our districts are living out our calling to inspire the world as passionate followers of Jesus Christ so all may experience God s life-giving love. We need your kokua, your help, in order to organize events and programs to offer to the Hawaii District, that will provide growth opportunities in the areas of faith, mission, social justice and leadership, Please review and answer the following questions as best you can, keeping in mind that we want to know about your intentional, motivational ministries that are helping to transform lives. Please type the questions and answers onto a separate sheet and bring them to the Annual Conference. We will collect them at the District Breakfast that s being held on June 14 in the Casa Loma Room. QUESTIONS: 1) What programs are you offering to build the biblical foundation of your members or fellowships Christian faith? If you re using a specific curriculum, please describe it. 2) What ministry(ies) are you offering to your community? Please describe how it s organized. 3) Are you holding services that offer an alternative to Sunday morning worship? Please describe what you re doing or have done. 4) What kinds of fundraising events does your church have? Please describe how it s organized. 5) Please describe any other event or program that you d like to share information about, that s not covered above. BARBARA GRACE RIPPLE SCHOLARSHIP FOR THEOLOGICAL EDUCATION Applications are now being received for the Barbara Grace Ripple Scholarship for Theological Education.

They should be responding to a call to the ordained ministry and during the 2018-19 academic year will be attending a United Methodist school of theology approved by the United Methodist General

5 BARBARA GRACE RIPPLE SCHOLARSHIP FOR THEOLOGICAL EDUCATION Applications are now being received for the Barbara Grace Ripple Scholarship for Theological Education. Applicants should be members of a United Methodist Church congregation within the Hawaii District (including Guam and Saipan) of the California Pacific Annual Conference. They should be responding to a call to the ordained ministry and during the academic year will be attending a United Methodist school of theology approved by the United Methodist General Board of Education. This scholarship was established in 2004 by the Hawaii District Committee on the District Superintendency and is administered by that committee to assist persons who must travel to the US mainland to further their theological education. The deadline for completed applications to be received in the Hawaii District Office is July 15th. Announcement of successful recipients will be made Mid-August. Inquiries may be addressed to committee chairperson, Grace Omura by by grace.les@gmail.com or phone LITURGICAL STOLES & CLERGY CINTURE AD Rev. Dr. Barbara Grace Ripple, former District Superintendent of Hawaii has donated some of her liturgical stoles and clergy cinctures. Cinctures include 1 white, 1 red, 1 purple, & 1 green. The stoles are all about 3 and 1/2 feet to 4 feet long) measured from the middle of the neck. There is a suggested donation of $10 each for the stoles and $2 for the cinctures. Please contact the Hawaii District Office at or at: info@hawaiidistrictumc.org. Donations will be made to the Harris Mission Bazaar. Bits and Pieces Please pray for those who are greatly affected by the volcanic eruption caused by Kilauea volcano. Hold Hilo UMC and Naalehu UMC in your prayers as the lava continues to create destruction on the Big Island. Congratulations to Rev. In Kwon Jun of Christ UMC & Rev. Won-Seok Yuh of Kahalu u UMC. They will be commissioned as Provisional Members at Annual Conference on the Elder track. Please pray for the pastors who will be leaving our district and for the new pastoral appointments that will begin on July 1, 2018.
