2 Ka Leo Mekokiko Oct - Nov Ministry Musings from the District Superintendent ANNUAL CONFERENCE MISSION STATEMENT: Inspiring the World as Passionate Followers of Jesus Christ So All May Experience God s Life-Giving Love When I was working as an executive director for the Korean Youth Center from , I counseled many youth who were going through an identify crisis. They lived in bi-cultural settings where two different world views and value systems clashed. They struggled with the expectations of their parents and their freedom in their quest for life. It was difficult for them not only to cope with growing pains, but also the conflict of being yourself and being the obedient child. It is not only the youth who are experiencing an identify crisis, but also the followers of Christ who live in the 21st century. It is very difficult to keep our loyalty to Jesus only and go all the way for Jesus. Without knowing who we are, or where we belong, it is very easy to get distracted and estranged from the path to follow Jesus. However, here is the good news. We are not alone. We belong to a community of faith as United Methodist. Last week, I attended the Clergy Convocation in Palm Springs where over 120 pastors came to renew their commitment to the covenant relationship as we worship, fellowship and learning together. It was a good opportunity for me to be with my clergy colleagues to reconfirm who I am and whose I am in the circle of trust. One of the highlights of the Convocation was pack food packages which able to feed 50,000 people. I felt renewed as working with my colleagues for our common goal to serving the people of God who needs our little generosity. As many of you know, the conference has a mission statement, Inspiring the world as passionate followers of Jesus Christ so all may experience God s life giving love. Yes, we are sharing the love of Jesus Christ through our friendship and service. Because of the love of the Holy Spirit in our church, our hearts and our minds are open. We gather together for fellowship and to worship with the breaking of bread and the service to our community and beyond the community. Indeed, we are a community of faith. Let us continuously celebrate our spiritual journey together as a family. Love and Peace, Rev. Se Hee Han District Superintendent CHARGE CONFERENCES FOR NEIGHBOR ISLANDS, SAIPAN & GUAM SPRC will meet an hour prior to the Charge Conference. 3 Ka Leo Mekokiko Oct - Nov AS WE JOURNEY May our journey lead us into a new place, a place where new life and new beginnings are waiting to be discovered. Aloha and E Komo Mai! Thank you Helena Ogle, our Associate District Lay Leader for leading us into a new place, the Women s Walk to Emmaus #44. A place where new life and new beginnings were discovered by ten pilgrims. Now energized, celebrating life in their Fourth Day in the Hawaii Emmaus Community. Thanks be to God! Alleluia! AS WE JOURNEY we reach into our backpacks and grab hold of the Bible. As we thumb the pages, the gospel of St. Luke the 24 Chapter is a narrative entitled The Walk to Emmaus. In the narrative we see two disciples, one of them named Cleopas. Both of them walking with Jesus from Jerusalem to Emmaus a distant of seven miles. As they were walking and talking with each other, the disciples did not recognize Jesus, this took place on the day the tomb was discovered to be empty. When they reached Emmaus, the disciples invited Jesus to take time-out, and offered something to eat. And it was then, when Jesus gave the blessing, broke the bread and offered it to the disciples their eyes were opened and they recognized him. In recognizing Jesus in their midst brought about great excitement, the disciples returned to Jerusalem proclaiming the good news. How true it is; it s moments like these that bring about clarity and our eyes are opened and we recognize the divine. September 1994, my eyes were opened as I embarked on a journey the Men s Walk to Emmaus #1. A 72-hour weekend in complete isolation from the secular world. The first day we journeyed in the palm of God s hands. We come into a deeper understanding of God s agape love extended to all of God s children. The second day we journeyed in the grace of Christ s love and compassion. The Grace of our Lord Jesus Christ continued to sustain us in growth and relationship. The third day we journeyed in communion with the Holy Spirit. The Advocate, the Helper, the Teacher stands before us with wisdom, knowledge, and understanding. The Walk to Emmaus journey continued into the Fourth Day. This year marked twenty-one years of Fourth Day as we just celebrated the Women s Walk to Emmaus #44. AS WE JOURNEY may our Fourth Day be a place that allows us to share our stories. May our stories, whatever it may be, personal or impersonal lead us into a new place, a place where new life and new beginnings are waiting to be discovered. Our stories are actually God s stories all woven into one great narrative to reveal God s glory. Let us pray: Bread of life the cup of promise, in this meal we all are one, in our dying and in our rising may your kingdom come. Amen. The third verse from No Ke Ano Ahi Ahi, music, traditional Hawaiian melody adopted by David Haas.)
