We had more than 100 people in attendance, a great turn-out, great speakers, and hopefully inspired you to want to go out in action and help those in poverty, homelessness or immigration problems. Did you hear your call? I did. For the first time, I joined the FACE walk to visit our Congress women and encouraged them to help pass immigration reform, especially for young people who may not have been born in the USA, but have lived here most of their lives. The story of Mahe Vakauta, our District United Methodist Women Vice President s son, touched me when I read it in the newspaper (look for article by Tsai, Michael. Debate on immigration hits close to Tongan man s heart, Honolulu Star-Advertiser: Incidental Lives: August 13, 2013). Besides the Mission Festival, the UMW LIMITLESS team held a wonderful gathering for young women in Hawaii at the Wesley Foundation on August 3 rd. I want to thank the women of Ewa Beach, Wahiawa, and Christ UMW for providing the meals and snacks. The cash donation from Aiea UMW also helped pay for the decorations and materials used. The event was free and about 40 young women registered and gathered together. Thank you, Atina, Nicolina, and Nicole. By the way, the LIMITLESS team is still available to come and visit your units and churches. They are looking for young women to gather together for other events and service projects as a group. They re also working closely with the District UMC s Youth and Young Adult Coordinators. In July, the District UMW Leadership team attended Mission u in California, along with a group of Tongan women from Hawaii. Altogether, there were 30 women from Hawaii in attendance. It was good to be so well represented, and the Roma dancing by Olita Mafi and two other Tongan women was outstanding at Cultural Night. In June, I represented the Hawaii UMW at the California-Pacific UMC s annual meeting at Redlands, California. That is always such an impressive gathering of lay people and ministers. The Lay Woman of the year was from Hawaii District, and Debbie Wise from Guam. Although Guam and Saipan aren t able to join us for our Hawaii District events, it is good to see their representatives at Redlands. I ve roomed with the woman from Saipan the last two years. Remember them in our prayers as they too are struggling with immigration issues. And now we are looking forward to our Hawaii District UMW Annual Celebration on September 28, at Wahiawa UMC. The registration form is in the newsletter. This will be my last event as your District President. It has been a great four years and you have been with me in prayer and support all of the time. 2 Vice President, Vila Vakauta Pg 2 Aloha my Sisters and Brothers in Christ, COME WALK WITH US Whoever says, I abide in him, ought to walk just as he walked (1 John 2:6 NRSV). When I read the Scripture and studied the life of Jesus, we can see He wants us to abide in Him. He came to serve like a servant and walked in order for us to learn by His example. I am overwhelmed at the job I have as one of His followers. Being a servant is different than being an employee. A servant works out of love and an employee works with expectation of compensation. It may help us to remember that those who followed Jesus were not employee, but they were blessed servants. We are United Methodist Women; we are also blessed, as we continue to find ways to serve those in need especially women, youth and children here and around the world. I remember the story of The Wise Woman s Stone : A wise woman who was traveling in the mountains found a precious stone in a stream. The next day she met another traveler who was hungry, and the wise woman opened her bag to share her food. The hungry traveler saw the precious stone and asked the woman to give it to him. She did so without hesitation. The traveler left, rejoicing in his good fortune. He knew the stone was worth enough to give him security for a lifetime. But a few days later he came back to return the stone to the wise woman. "I've been thinking," he said, "I know how valuable the stone is, but I give it back in the hope that you can give me something even more precious. Give me what you have within you that enabled you to give me the stone." (Author Unknown, Short Story Yuni Words of Wisdom, As United Methodist Women, we walk and serve in the same ways as Jesus walked, giving our time, money, talents, skills, and prayers. We give all we have and that s our PURPOSE to support His Mission. Mission u 2013 s theme was Learning Together for the Transformation of the World. Special thanks to all the local units who send their women to the Mission u. We shared love of God and experienced the stories of people around the world. And a message came with the question, what can I do? And what can we do? Mahalo nui loa for Hawaii District churches and local unit, for we had an awesome attendance during our Mission Festival. Looking ahead is September 28, the Hawaii District Annual Celebration. Local units, please bring your Pledge and Unit Banner that day E komo mai! Come and walk with us, as if we re walking with Jesus on that day and Celebrate Our Lives in the heart of God. Oh, it is a blessed thing to walk with and serve in Jesus Christ! 5 Social Action, Fusi Ta ufo ou Pg 5 Social Action Support Just, Humane Immigration Reform On July 13, 2013, Harris United Methodist Church celebrated their 125 th anniversary. This church was founded by Japanese immigrants in In such a joyous occasion and pre-celebrating of their anniversary, Rev. Stan Bain along with Faith Action for Community Equity (FACE) leaders and members held the Comprehensive Immigration Reform summit. Our very own Bishop Minerva Carcano was the guest speaker along with other speakers from the head of state offices. Her speech encouraged the audience to focus on three areas of concern for the immigration reform: Protection for immigrants, Empowerment of people of faith to speak out more boldly for immigrants, and Moral courage for Members of Congress to exercise leadership in enacting humane immigration reform. Bishop Carcano encouraged the people of the church to be pro-active and involved with the Immigration Reform by: writing op-eds for local newspapers standing with President Obama in his call for the comprehensive immigration reform; contact Congress leaders and let them know that United Methodists stand for comprehensive immigration reform; blog about our commitment to justice for our immigrant brothers and sisters; Observe Family Unity Prayer Vigils in your area. There is power in prayer! One of the most important aspects of the just and humane immigration reform we are advocating for is reunification of families separated by migration. If at any given chances you may not be able to follow up on what is listed above, a sample letter has been prepared, which can be modified anyway you deem necessary that you can use to solicit signatures supporting immigration reform to take to your member of Congress. The letter emphasizes that United Methodists have long advocated for just, humane immigration reform. You are encouraged to use this letter with your own congregation and recruit other churches they do not have to all be United Methodist to join you in doing this. My deepest thanks go out to everyone who worked hard on planning and doing more than their parts that day. As we enter the last quarter of the year, it is time to get ready for the reports. I ve been told by the Cal-Pac Annual Conference leaders that the reporting form for "Mission Today" has been changed again. The substantive contents did not change. Only the format is changed for easier reporting. The new reporting form is attached at the end of the newsletter for your use. Hawaii District continues to honor the units for their Mission Studies. The report form for Mission Studies Certificate is also attached. Please remember that the date for local units to return these forms to me is Dec 15. 7 Communication Coordinator, Lucy Aholelei Pg 7 Communication Coordinator SHARING SHORT & SWEET EXPERIENCES The Mission u trip overseas in July of this year was another great experience, as it s all a part of becoming closer to our call. While many from the Hawaii District attended this rewarding event held at Biola University of Southern California, it was nice to see familiar and welcoming faces of those from the US Mainland units. Rest assured that YOU have a strong committee at your service. Nevertheless, challenges were in our midst, starting with commuting mishaps to a fall injury among one of our officers. Despite it all, everyone maintained content with peace and love from the healing powers of prayers. Most of us attended The Call: Living Sacramentally, Walking Justly which is also the title of the McClain, Norberg, and Kruh book assigned for this class. It was the only study available in Korean, Spanish, and Tongan language. Our group s instructor was Rev. Joel Hortiales, who is an Associate Director of Hispanic/Latino Ministries for the California-Pacific Conference. Linked to his profession or call, he shared some problems immigrants face while living in the US. In one example, reverend voiced complaint towards wrongful separation of families involving minor children. Such incident is when the parents are deported due to non-us citizenship and/or overstay, but their minors are left behind. As US citizens, we are encouraged to act as advocates, recognizing the need for modification that construe pardoning in such cases. Overall, Rev. Hortiales enlightened our thoughts with centered focus on God Almighty. Where there is our call, walk justly by faith, being graceful in all we do, and live sacramentally as we bring ourselves unconditionally towards His needs. The class ended with a private little ceremony performed by a friend of the reverend, renewing his marriage vows to wife, along with their three children. He surprised his wife, as she was in the classroom for a visit, with flowers and asked her hand in a renewed marriage, and the whole class became witnesses to this short and sweet occasion. These are all the reasons why I thank God for my calling, to be a part of the United Methodist Women look for future information in the Ka Ha ilono of Mission u coming to Hawaii soon. 8 Limitless Team, Nicole Nonies, Nikki and Atina Pascua Pg 8 ALOHA UNITED METHODIST WOMEN, On August 3rd, 2013, The Future Leaders of the California-Pacific Limitless Team presented Forever Limitless at the Wesley Foundation in Hawaii. With nearly 40 young women in attendance we came together for an event that was uplifting, educational and got the women ready to become FOREVER LIMITLESS as Esthers of the church. The day was filled with inspirational keynote speakers, an Ubuntu project, fellowship, worship and personal growth as we learned to be brave and stand up for social justice in our world.

9 Committee on Nomination, Penny Brouillette Membership Nurture, Beverly Aiwohi Pg 9 Greetings to all UMW Sisters: There has been so much taking place in our United Methodist Women's District Team and California-Pacific Conference events. First, all our district officers from Hawaii and California who came to Mission u had an excellent learning and growing time this year at Biola University in La Mirada, California. All ladies who attended took part in studies, choosing different classes including The Call: Sacramental Justice, Poverty, Roma (Gypsies involved with the Jews in the unbelievable horrific, holocaust happenings) and Immigration Reform Laws with the upcoming Government Bill vote for all immigrants all over the world, who are not yet US citizens. These are all very vital, priority and important subjects for all people, being a part of our lives today. Last but not least, an event happened to me I didn't expect on my Mission u trip, where I tripped, fell and broke my kneecap during that weekend on campus. It could have been so much worse & I'm thankful to the Lord, my body is fixable. Many people were very supportive, kind & helpful to me, which I certainly appreciated and sincerely thank you all very much! I could not have gone through the weekend so successfully without your thoughts & prayers & care for me, I'm sure!! Then in Hawaii, after Mission u, it was time again to select more new Hawaii District Team officers for our open District office positions, whom we truly welcome and congratulate. They are: President - Ellen Owens, Kilohana UMC Secretary - Minja Choe, Christ UMC Education & Interpretation Mission Co-ordinator Gwen Maka, First UMC Committee on Nominations Chair - Penny Brouillette, Aldersgate UMC All members with Committee on Nominations will continue with their service, and by the grace of God, we have done this in our whole district team, and again we say thank you very much for your service to Him. We are always looking for new people and there are Gifts & Graces forms you may fill out that are in this newsletter, to help our Lord and the United Methodists Women's Ministries, which would be a wonderful blessing for all of us. This is a reminder from the Hawaii District United Methodist Women Treasurer regarding YOUR monetary donations needed to meet our 2013 proposed givings of $40,000. UMW has a long ways towards it. To date, we ve only received $9,000, and the end is near!! For 2013, has your UMW Unit remitted support for the following? PLEDGE TO MISSION to help fulfill the PURPOSE of the United Methodist Women by contributing to the largest channel of Mission Giving. SPECIAL MISSION RECOGNITION Do you want to honor a friend working in mission? Give Special Mission Recognition pin. An individual, circle or unit can recognize a faithful worker in mission by giving him or her Special Mission Recognition pin. GIFT TO MISSON Honor someone for his or her Christ-like mission service.
