2 Ka Leo Mekokiko Jan-Feb Ministry Musings from the District Superintendent ANNUAL CONFERENCE MISSION STATEMENT: Inspiring the World as Passionate Followers of Jesus Christ So All May Experience God s Life-Giving Love It seems me that having a cold has become a part of my life since I have been traveling intensively and have been loaded down with so many responsibilities. More now than any other time, I need to practice self care in order to stay healthy and strong. Everybody seems to have had the flu this year is a comment I am hearing regularly, in between the coughs and sneezes. The flu season always provides the lead into Lent. Many people each year arrive at Ash Wednesday with a cold. On the calendar, the Christian season of Lent leads us from winter into spring. Spiritually, the season leads us from remembering the time of Jesus temptation in the desert, through the events of his betrayal and gruesome death into the glorious morning of His resurrection. The daffodil bulbs in a garden have been going though a process of gaining new strength, planning to grow, and deciding which way is up. In the same way Christians, during Lent, are committed to a reevaluation of our faith. It is a time of confession and turning around our own life. It is a time of deepening as we re-examine the priorities we make of energy, time, money and love. Lent is a time to re-affirm the promises we made when we were baptized. When you were baptized or confirmed, you were asked Will you obediently keep God s holy will and commandments and walk in the same way all the days of your life? You said I will, by God s help. How can you keep this promise? One way is to use Lent 2017 as an opportunity to do some stock-taking in your own life, and in our lives together as a Church. May I suggest that you make time to read one of the Gospels from beginning to end? Try either Mark or Luke. If that sounds too much just take a few verses each day from the Sermon on the Mount in Matthew, chapters 5 through 7. The flu season is almost over. Soon spring will be here and with it comes a wonderful promise of New Life in Jesus Christ. Thanks be to God! Pastor Se Hee Han BISHOP S CONFIRMATION RETREAT September 22-24, 2017 Camp Mokuleia Our Youth will have an exciting opportunity to meet with Bishop Grant Hagiya and learn about the meaning of confirmation. I invite your church to prepare for this exciting spiritual journey for our youth. Date: September 22-24, 2017 (Friday thru Sunday) Place: Camp Mokuleia Farrington Highway, Waialua, Hawaii Who: Ages 11 thru 16 or someone looking for confirmation
3 Ka Leo Mekokiko Jan-Feb MESSAGE FROM THE DISTRICT LAY LEADER Greetings, Brothers and Sisters in Christ, In January, I attended a one-day retreat for the Cal-Pac Conference Laity Council, which was held at the Aldersgate Retreat Center in Pacific Palisades, California. There, I met the Cal-Pac Conference Co-Lay Leaders Phil and Connee Freeman, and Lay Leaders and Associate Lay Leaders of the North, West, East and South Districts. We learned about the four ministries of discipleship: Hospitality, Offer Christ, Purpose, Engagement. (HOPE). As Christian disciples, we: proclaim the Gospel (H), lead persons to commit their lives to Christ (O), nurture others through living out our Christian faith (P), and send persons out to transform the world (E). Bishop Grant Hagiya also spent some time with us to share missional priorities of our Conference. To reach the nones (the 1 in 3 persons today who have no church affiliation and who believe in individualism, not institutions), Bishop Hagiya challenged us to think about ways to change our church culture the status quo is not acceptable. Young people today don t want to just do what the older generations do, they want to know why we do things the way we do it. Our local churches need to strengthen our spiritual grounding and offer this food to the nones who are hungering for spirituality. Think about how you can share with others, why you go to church, why you believe in God, why you re a Christian, why you re a United Methodist. March 1 will be the beginning of this year s Lenten Season. This will be an opportune time to reflect on how you and I, the Laity of the Hawaii District of the United Methodist Church, will help to build a firmer foundation for the Church. We must proclaim Jesus Christ as our Savior, yes, but we must show the Love of Christ through our actions. Renew your commitment to serving God and our neighbor through your local church. Enhance your knowledge and experience of God with fellow believers. As believers in the saving Grace of God through Jesus Christ, we are like living stones, built into a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God s own people, in order that you may proclaim the mighty acts of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. (1 Peter 2:5 and 9). Strengthened by the Holy Spirit, may you all encourage one another and build up each other, as indeed you are doing. (1 Thessalonians 5:11) Until next time. UMCOR Sunday on March 26th Has your church made plans for UMCOR Sunday, a special Sunday in The United Methodist Church? It is on Sunday, March 26, 2017 and was formerly called One Great Hour of Sharing. Resources to promote this Sunday have been prepared for you (pastors and church leadership teams) - complete with images (for Facebook, cellphones, PowerPoint, etc.), videos, e-books and other great tools. On the internet go to UMCOR Sunday Pastor and Leader s Kit at < -articles/umcor-sunday-pastor-and-leaders-kit>. Aloha and Peace, Lynn Owan Attention: all UNITED METHODIST MEN Every four years the General Commission of United Methodist Men hold a national meeting. This is the fourth year and it will be held in Indianapolis, Indiana on July 7-8, It is a wonderful opportunity to meet United Methodist men from all over the country. It is open to all UM Men, including pastors. It includes workshops, excellent speakers, great music, and many opportunities to experience Christ in your life. You can learn more about it by going to < You can register on-line and get any additional information. I realize that there is the airfare and registration expense, but I feel it would be beneficial for anyone to go and learn about the UMM. We have a lot going on at the national level that will make you proud that you are a United Methodist. It would be nice to get a group from Hawaii to attend. Aloha, Keith Isaacson, District UMM President
4 Ka Leo Mekokiko Jan-Feb Lay Servant Ministries Our pastors need committed laity to advance our ministry of making disciples for the transformation of the world. The Lay Servant Ministries is one way for Laity to be trained and informed. This ministry was known as Lay SPEAKING. Lay persons who took classes were called Lay SPEAKERS. However, in 2012 the General Conference of the United Methodist Church changed our name to Lay SERVANT ministries. Many people think this ministry is for only those who want to be lay preachers. However, this ministries as you can see from our logo has three areas of study and service: Caring, Leading and Communicating. So if you are involved in any of the ministries of the church related to caring, like the Stephen Ministries or prayer warriors you might want to consider being a Lay Servant and taking some classes that are offered. Perhaps you are in leadership, like being on the church council, or a committee chairperson, you might want to consider being a Lay Servant. Of course, if you are interested in a communicating ministry like preaching, or public speaking or in conflict resolutions, you would want to be a Lay Servant. There are three categories of Lay Servant as defined by the 2016 General Conference. The first level is Certified Lay Servant. This person has taken the Basic class and at least one Advanced class. The second level is Certified Lay Speaker. This person has taken the Basic class and six more: Leading Worship, Leading Prayer, Discovering Spiritual Gifts, Preaching, United Methodist Heritage and Polity. The third level is Certified Lay Minister. This person interested in specialized ministry and has taken a track of study relevant to the person s assignment. Usually this requires the person to attend classes on the mainland. All levels of ministry must be approved by their church conference after having submitted an Annual Report. Course work must be within the last three years. Classes are often offered District wide. With people s busy schedules most of the recent classes are being held at individual church s request. The people at Aldergate and First UMC wanted to refresh their laity so they got teachers and offered the Basic class. A person on Maui wanted to begin classes, so the pastor of the church taught the Basic Class. Another group on Maui got a Certified Lay Servant to teach the Basic class. Recently, I was visiting the Kona area and offered the Leading Public Prayer class to several people from the Kona UMC. Currently the Preaching class is being held at First UMC. The Basic class is one of two classes that must be taught face to face. The other class is the Preaching class. Many other classes are taught online through, BeADisciple.org. Most of the courses come with a participant book and an instructor s book and can be ordered from Upper Room or Cokesbury. These are some other classes beside the one listed for Certified Lay Speaker: Transforming Evangelism, Telling Stories, Devotional Life in the Wesleyan Tradition, Lay Pastoral Care Caring, Class Leader, Lay Servants as Christian Transformational Leaders, Lay Servants Lead in Conflict Resolution. So if your church is interested in any of these classes let me know and we can make arrangements to offer it to your congregation. Winnie Ching, Hawaii District Director of Lay Servant Ministries, <wingin322@yahoo.com> Giving the Religious Leaders of Tomorrow a Helping Hand Today Business Insurance Services, Inc., the district s insurance agent, shared that Church Mutual Insurance Company (our insurer) will offer $250,000 in scholarships for eligible religious scholars across the country.
